Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This KZread channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

This summer I followed a foursome of old guys playing off the same tees as me. There's 5 sets of tees at this course, and I was on the 4th one back. Not one of them hit drives over 200. Besides on the par 3's when they dig out their 3 wood, it is literally impossible for them to have any chance at birdie. Actually the front sets of tees are labeled as Junior/Senior. According to the scorecard, they should've been playing a 4500 yard course instead of 6700. I guess they could've played from the red tees too which are labeled as Forward and not Women's. Those are 5300 so not bad.

Hey rick! Your channel has been incredibly helpful to me, both in my golf game and in helping me get through covid (by thinking about my golf game haha). I just thought I'd share in case anyone didn't know. Top Flite was purchased by Dick's Sporting Goods in the US a few years back. Dick's also own's GolfGalaxy, which is one of, if not, the largest online golf retailers here. They have rebranded Top Flite completely, and I think they're starting to find their niche!

Great ball at this price. Golf digest gold in its class for several years. The wedge grove change and urethane cover ruined the ball for years. It's back to the original ionomer cover makes it great again.

You're thinking of the TopFlite XL, also known as the "Rock Flite" around here... When I was learning the game I settled on TopFlite D2 Feel balls - reasonably soft and at a great price. When they introduced the Gamer I moved to that and played it for a few years, eventually switching to the Gamer Tour which had the Urethane cover. Nice feel and great price. I never considered another ball until they Callaway Chrome Soft came out which was only a little more money and had more spin off my irons. Now that Callaway's priced up there with the Pro V1, I'm looking for a new ball again..

The new Top Flites are surprisingly nice. I play with the previous version D2 Feel (which has now been rebranded as the Hammer Control). As Rick said, the previous version of the Gamer had a urethane cover which was beat up in less than 6 holes. They are so much softer than they used to be. Had my first hole in 1 last Friday using them. 188 yards, 5 Hybrid. Flew high and landed soft. 🙌

Hi Rick, as a 20+ handicapper playing mostly a local 9 par 3's course with a par of 27 I do ok. best score (recently) is 29 usually 30-34. Until recently I had a really bad slice in my game which your videos have helped eradicate, I now occasionally hook the ball and seldom slice. In my last 6 games I have only hit one slice, awesome. ( grip was the key I was holding the club too high on the handle and a weak top hand ) I also used to play another course by the river Tees with water on the right of 7 of the nine holes. I got fed up of buying new balls and losing them in the river or out of bounds over a hedge due to my slice, I could lose 6 balls a round from the tee. As a result i started to collect balls I found and played these, sometimes the balls were well worn but free. They could be anything from cheap Dunlop to Titlist V1. Now i am becoming more consistent from the tee should i start using new balls again? Is there a great deal of difference between an old worn ball and a new one for a high handicap amateur golfer?

Thanks for the review. I’ll give them a try. I play the XL distance balls and I’m happy with them but would like to see if these will produce more spin on approach shots. The XLs would avg 1-3 yards past the divot for my high ball flight. I am single digit handicap and pretty long off the tee. I play top flites cause their cheap period. It’s funny though when I’m playing with people and their reactions when they notice that im playing them. I usually get a “you know if you play a proV you’ll get more distance”. It’s usually after they hit their 2nd shot out of the trees that ends up close to my drive LOL. Im a firm believer of the saying “it’s not the arrow”. I did take a lot of lessons in the past though and personally is what got me to this level that expensive clubs or balls would have never done.

Thanks for the great review of the new Top-Flight ball. I worked in a retail golf pro shop in the 1990's, and Top-Flight balls were our low end balls, they came in a box of 18 balls, that we sold for about $12 USD. Compared to Titleist Professional balls that we sold for $49.00 USD per dozen and Bridgestone's for around $25 per dozen. When we sponsored local charity golf events, we would put together bags for the players that had tees, ball makers, a golf shirt, a towel, and a couple of sleeves of Top-Flight balls. But, now I will have to buy a box to try out on the course. Since I only play 9 holes, my bad left leg and lower back won't hold up for 18, even when I am riding in a buggy, it's hard to justify, to my wife, spending $40+ for Titleist Pro V1's. Thanks for the heads up!
