The precipice: existential risk and the future of humanity | Toby Ord | EA Global: London 2019
If all goes well, human history is just beginning. Our species could survive for billions of years, reaching heights of flourishing unimaginable today. But this vast future is at risk. We have gained the power to destroy ourselves, and all our potential, forever, and we haven’t yet gained the wisdom to ensure that we don’t. Toby Ord, an Oxford moral philosopher and research fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute, expands on these ideas and discusses adopting the perspective of humanity - one of the major themes of his book, The Precipice.

My personal takeaway: the cause of safeguarding humanity can be framed in such a way that makes it come so naturally and obviously, rather than appear to be a fringe idea. It can be beautifully framed in such a way that touches the heart, striking a chord beyond geeky circles. Dr. Toby Ord has demonstrated this.
Beautifully written presentation. I look forward to reading the book.
I've ordered the book. 📖 I'm excited 😁
As a German Biochemist Ph D - in our Highschool in the 1970´s we studied the Club of Rome, 1973 the Oil Shock closed the German Autobahn - the effect of all those threats was Zero, Nill, Zilch. We never learn anything. 50 years of Precipice racing ..."Things to Come" H G Wells - many more to come...
One of the most profoundly inspiring and beautifully written books I have ever read.
Very interesting! And a cure against the disintegration of human individuals
Great talk
How does anyone go about transforming a precipice in the Age of precipices?

How do the post modernist reflect being in the modern?
It's over folks. Sorry.
This book is fantastic and very important. Unfortunately it’s about 50 years too late. The author in my opinion is a bit idealistic. The truth is that we don’t even have a 50/50 chance that civilization makes it through this century. Perhaps 3/6 that we don’t go extinct this century. I personally am not holding out for hope. We are screwed mostly thanks to man’s greed.
