The Powerpuff Girls Movie Review | This is The Movie They Get?

Фильм және анимация

THE CITY OF TOWNSVILLE…is the setting of the movie that this review will look into, The Powerpuff Girls Movie. The original series is one of the most beloved shows on Cartoon Network, and one of the very few that go to have their own feature film. However, in this review, there is a chance that we’ll see how the movie may not be as mighty as The Powerpuff Girls’ powers.

I know four reasons The Powerpuff Girls Movie flopped at the box office: •As usual, Warner Bros. didn't help Cartoon Network to promote the movie properly •They released it at the same time as Lilo & Stitch, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Scooby Doo and Men in Black II, which were box office hits •Many believed the film was targeted only for girls when in reality it's a movie that boys and grown ups can enjoy, as well •It came out in a time when people was still traumatized by the 9/11 that they couldn't stand seeing buildings being destroyed in TV or films. And the PPG movie has many scenes involving destroyed buildings and explosions

Warner Bros is playing strange moves with the Powerpuff Girls IP right now. There's a PPG stage to fight on in Multiversus, and Mojo Jojo shows up as a stage hazard, but there's no playable PPG character in the game now nor has one been announced. Personally I think one character slot where you can select each girl as a "costume" wherein each girl has a signature special move and then they share the other two specials makes the most sense for the game, but I imagine the cost of 3 VAs is the biggest factor in why they aren't in the game already

Fun fact: Creator Craig McCraken stated that due to the politics of the film’s production, he decided to stick with television instead of moving to films like Genndy tartakovsky. It was a lot of stress on him. But when comes to the powerpuff girls movie, I thought it was ok. There are some things i enjoy like the action, the darker tone, and I really love how Mojo this is at his most evil here. He a lot more serious and threatening as an evil genius but still kept the same charm of him from his motor mouth and egotistical moments that are hilarious. But with that it’s just extended episode of the series. The story is a predictable origin story. The animation doesn’t translate to feature film and the characters are all one dimensional. But I do like the Easter eggs of other films like Fuzzy lumpkins and the gang green gang but one character that felt would’ve been interesting to see is actually, HIM. It would’ve been interesting to see how the girls first encounter him. But I give the movie a 6/10. It’s fine for what it was going for but Cartoon Network made better movies than this and ironically they were made for television like Ed Edd n Eddy big picture show or Steven universe the movie.

I think the box office disappointment of “The Powerpuff Girls Movie” can be similar to “The Emperor’s New Groove”, in terms of how poorly marketed they were. For Disney, back in 2000, the group thought “102 Dalmatians” was easy to sell, while Warner Bros., during the summer of 2002, put their energy on the live-action “Scooby-Doo”. While it’s nice to see them have their own cult followings, it’s such a pity that they were a lost cause during their initial theatrical releases, especially with serious competition also contributing to the financial failures.

I remember that this movie was such a flop that it caused Cartoon Network to not make any more movies based on their shows direct to theatres. I guess they tried to be like Nickelodeon as they had movies based on their shows but couldn't, but I feel CN and Warner Bros. had no one to blame but themselves because if they gave the movie better marketing, along with releasing it at a time where the 2002 film season wasn't as congested, as it came out at the same time as Lilo and Stitch and Men in Black II, among other big movies, it could've had a chance. I also find it fitting that part of the soundtrack of this movie included a song from girl idol group No Secrets since, like The PowerPuff Girls movie, could never hit it big and only had one album before breaking up. Also, your comments about CN becoming aware of older audiences in the past makes me sad as it was clear this was not the CN we now know as they don't want older audiences anymore, as noted with their cancelations of Young Justice and Infinty Train, and how they almost messed up Steven Universe.

Interesting fact about the film: Craig McCracken wanted this film to not be exclusively for girls as at the time CN was selling merch to girls and making the show look more girly than it actually was. The crew behind the film wanted either an action movie or a character study and CN decided to commission both for the plot. That's why the final film is the way it is. Craig would later regret not making it sillier and lighter. Really good review, Mat

When I watched this movie last November, I actually really liked this movie and consider this to be one of the better animated TV to movie adaptations that I have seen, and my only real issue with it is the fact that they didn’t seem to really give as much depth to Mojo Jojo as much as they wanted to. Mat really had the nerve to make a Wish reference in the title. According to Mat: All that the girls want is just a little respect, And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) And this is the film they get? (Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do) It seems like Kronk’s New Groove is next. This will be interesting because The Emperor’s New Groove is one of Mat’s favorite Disney movies, so if this ends up disappointing, then Mat won’t be very satisfied.

While I have seen some episodes of the original series when I was a kid (perhaps the last two seasons more than the first four, feel free to feel sorry for me) I grew up more playing the games on the Cartoon Network website. I did also see most of this movie on TV back then, but I wasn't as big of a fan of it because of its unpleasant moments. Anyway, I think I would enjoy the next review coming up than this, Kronk's New Groove. What I expect Aniamt to say about it is that it's not as enjoyable as The Emperor's New Groove, but it still has some noticeable heart in it. EDIT: Also, I think I actually requested that movie for him to review some years ago, so I think that'll be the first time him reviewing a movie that I requested him.

I actually really liked the movie but I totally understand your points. There are some flaws in the story and characterization. The biggest bummer was the relationship between Mojo and the Professor because there is no relationship between them. It feels like they're total strangers. So I totally agree that it's unfortunate that the movie didn't get more into the relationship between Mojo and the Professor.

They could have added a little more time to the movie, and made their personalities a little rougher from the start. But I don’t think it’s especially bad that they held their powers in check initially, because the professor told them to, and then they got ahead of themselves when they played tag, as kids might do. The movie probably could have been a little more smoothed out in that regard, I agree.

To answer your question, the reason why they didn't acknowledge the relationship between Mojo and the Professor in this movie is because that was already touched upon in the series, particularly in the episode where Mojo kidnaps the Professor and forces him to give him super powers. Which leads to a very memorable scene where the Professor brings up that it was Mojo who created the Powerpuff Girls, this makes Mojo go catatonic and repeat the words "It was me?"

I have been a PPG fan for a long time, and I actually have ideas that people actually think should be canon in the next reinstallment of the franchise (I don't know if Craig McCracken himself would like the ideas or will use them since I don't have anyways to contact him). Such as: *More episodes that are centered around the supporting characters & villains to flesh them out more. *Some villains going through redemption arcs. *Additions of new characters like Emma Tywan - The Amanda Waller of the PPG Universe. More teachers at Pokey Oak school The villains' probation officers, one of them is going to be a major key player in their clients' redemption arc. *New superheroes to handle the night-shift (past the Girls' bed time).

I don't get it. Why do these people think this movie is decent or okay ? Am I the only one who hates this movie with a passion because of its similarities to Chicken Little, where the young protagonists live with a single father and are shunned by incredibly unpleasant citizens after accidentally destroying their town ? The Powerpuff Girls is supposed to be an homage to the superhero parodies of the 1960s like Underdog and Adam West's Batman. Here it's like they wanted it to be like the X-Men, especially the prejudice part. Not to mention it contained a lot of building destruction that occurred a couple of months after 9/11, which many people were still traumatized after this event. Hell, even the late great Roger Ebert compared the tag scene to the infamous event. The art style is not great either. It's still the same thing that destroyed the series in the last seasons under the guidance of a baby-faced creep. And the final nail in the coffin, Craig McCracken's irresponsibility not only cost him his career as a film director, but also the movies of other CN series, such as Ed, Edd n Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, KND: Kids Next Door , Foster's. Home of Imaginary Friends, Camp Lazlo, Ben 10, Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Steven Universe will be translated to television instead of the big screen. As for the Powerpuff Girls itself, it never recovered, being given a crappy legacy, such as an anime series that only focuses on its juvenile humor, a CGI special that makes no sense, and let's not get started on the infamous 2016 Reboot or the cancelled live-action series by CW.

It has nothing to do with Chicken Little if anything CL is a bad version of the JImmy Neutron movie with them both having ailens , the Professor is a way better father than Buck . The whole town disownign and shunnign them hold more water unlike the towns folks in CL who got on a kid's case for a year for one little mistake the girls casue way more damage in an afternoon in a real world context that would cost over a billion dollars. Chicken Little didnt cause that much danage and yet the towns folks cant get over it . Isnt the whole town or villiage shunning one or a few outcasts also the plot in A Bugs Life so by this logic The PPG movie is also similar to that movie but it being an orgin story it makes logical sense for the girls to have earned their reputantion in the show. It isnt fair to acuse Craig of other CN movies to not get put on the big screen if anything CN is to blame . Are movies like EEnE Big Picture Show or KND Zero any worse if there not in theaters ? The Anime series was alright but i do agree on the 2016 series.

But at least the first two shows got movies. Along with Ben 10, Codename Kids Next Door, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, Teen Titans, Regular Show, Steven Universe, etc. Why couldn’t Adventure Time, or Juniper Lee have a film? I personally enjoyed this movie, even though I'm not much of a fan of Powerpuff Girls, but I think releasing it in theaters was a mistake. You can practically smell the made-for-TV quality with the animation. Every other feature length expansion of a Cartoon Network show (except Toddler Titans) knew it would never succeed in cinemas. How did the filmmakers expect this to go against Lilo & Stitch, Ice Age, and freakin' Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron?

I like the idea of Mojo Jojo getting revenge on the girls for taking Prof. Utonium's attention away from him. But since there was already an episode discussing that topic, I feel that would cause continuity issues if that was brought up in this prequel film. Unless Mojo would somehow erase their memories of that detail after the events of the movie. Or maybe Him just for the fun of it.
