+SilverDogMat I think I would be more afraid of Tom's Doctor actually carrying thru on his threat though. The 4th Doctor had a strong sense of moral codes and love for other life BUT I always sensed a darkness within the 4th Doctor as well that would show itself when he would occasionally snap at people including Sarah Jane and Scorby in "Seeds Of Doom" or resort to trying to blow up his enemy with a hand grenade in "The Deadly Assassin". God bless.😀

+Elton Laleham I agree. I like Pertwee and Tom Baker in terms of actors and as the Doctor. But I think Tom's Doctor was a more believable choice because I think his Doctor was more analytical and moralistic. Tom's Doctor could fight on occasion but his Doctor also liked to engage his enemies on an intellectual basis and not just follow orders blatantly but really look deeper into the situation and what was right or not right morally. God bless.

And thus the seeds of the Time War were sown. Excellent acting from Tom Baker and Michael Wisher - reminding us that sometimes evil is a question of scale. Classic Who was a good platform for presenting a range of ethical issues very effectively. It is sad to hear the news of the death of Peter Miles, who played the ruthless Nyder so convincingly. May he rest in peace.

Davros is one of those rare Doctor Who villains who, even when the budget wasn't exactly stellar, still managed to remain at an impressive level of quality in almost all of his appearances, in terms of both the acting and the makeup/costume for the character. Destiny of the Daleks is that odd occasion where he wasn't...great... But he is honestly what makes Revelation of the Daleks, Journey's End and even The Magician's Apprentice worth watching, not to mention his interactions with the respective Doctors of those stories. And my goodness do he and the Fourth Doctor shine here.

Davros was recast for "Destiny of the Daleks" as Michael Wisher was unavailable. They didn't have the budget to create a new prosthetic mask for the new actor, David Gooderson, so they reused the mask from "Genesis of the Daleks" which didn't fit, but they had to make it work. By the time Terry Molloy took on the role for "Ressurection of the Daleks" and subsequent appearances, they were able to make a new mask to fit him. That's why the presentation in "Destiny" wasn't on par with the others.

As said above, it's probably for both surgery and as a last resort, I also personally think it was in case of a malfunction and davros needed to shut off his chair systems to prevent his injury, however how he would aim to survive would be beyond me, perhaps there is a backup system installed but it only lasts 30 seconds, hence the reason davros managed to stay alive that long without life support This is just a theory

Hartnell was very dark. Not even a hero to begin with. He was quite a violent Doctor who thought little of human life at first. Had no problem kidnapping two school teachers, bashing a caveman's head in and laughed sadistically at indirectly causing the burning of Rome. If anything the time war changed him for the better. He's much more merciful and less violent in the new series.

Surely one of if not the finest scene in the show's entire history - Davros is a brilliant creation, superbly realised by Michael Wisher. A story where pretyt much every element came together to create a darn near perfect whole. I loved the line in the Target book "In his wheelchair, Davros should have been pitiable. Instead he was terrifying". It speaks of him radiating intellect and indominatable will. It's astonishing when you consider that this was a show with an extremely limitted budget, still techically children's drama, made on a shoestring and broadcast at half past five in the evening!

I grew up with Tom as the Doctor. This episode was aired 1 year, and a few days prior to my birth, and might be the first Who story I ever saw as a child. My childhood home was big on PBS, and if PBS was huge in your house in the 80's, chances are you had Tom on your screen regularly. This scene comes from one of my earliest memories of the show. At a time when I was a viewer who didn't fully understand the implications of the dialog; I just thought the Daleks were cool, and scary. Now, I regard scenes like these (and this one in particular) as some of the best moments in the entire history of the show. Tom is, as usual, brilliant in this scene, and Peter Miles performance as Nyder, still to this day, gives me cold chills. However, Michael Wishers performance as Davros really did take the show. It's a shame Mr. Wisher didn't reprise his role later on. In my view, he was, and still is, the best Davros.

Two possible reasons: first, it was present when his mobile support system had to be shut off to be repaire dor mainatined, in which case one would assume he'd be reconnected to the original support system (as the chair and it;s systems were actually designed by Davros himself). Second, it has largely entered cannon (via Target novelisations and Big Fnish), that the Thals only kept him alive at all because he was needed as their top scientist but they gave him the option to commit suicide via a self-actuated switch (originally with poison) if Davros himself considered his new existance intolerable. One would asusme he kept the option to kill himself either when life became unbearable or when he considerd hs purpose to be complete.

I haven't watched that much DOCTOR WHO, especially of the older episodes. But I did watch GENESIS OF THE DALEKS recently, and this monologue stayed with me. I love these kinds of villains. Admittedly Davros kind of pusses out in the end, but I love villains driven by a godlike lust for power.

+Alan Jarvis Again why do people watch one clip and not a whole episode before commenting. It's a phenomenal episode of Who and well worth watching at least once. Plus then people could make comments that were well informed. Again Tom's Doctor was brilliant because he used his brain and his fists depending on the situation and what was needed at that moment. Ah....but I forgot....in some fans view only the newer series counts and then they deprive themselves of watching brilliant Doctors and episodes like this.

  • @colinmcphan

+Alan Jarvis calm down yourself. I am not assuming anything. All you did was trash the episode. Tell me one nice thing you said about this episode. I Re-read your posts and all you did was complain and be negative. You didn't say anything nice about Tom's Doctor or the episode. If you don't like either that is fine but why waste time watching it then. Plus I am saying this in a calm manner. Don't assume things either. In the episode the Doctor doas go back to blow up the room with the embryos but a Dalek comes along and starts to fire at him. He has to duck for cover and the wires won't reach around the corner so he smartly leaves them in the way of the Dalek. He stays to make sure the room is blown up. That is good writing....not a cop out as you put it. Tom's Doctor was just as brave and could be just as ruthless as the other Doctors. He would also throw a punch when needed. Again why watch a Doctor that doasn't interest you. Only going by what you posted.

+Linda Taylor You say Tom is one of your favorite Doctors but your posts do nothing but complain about him and how bad his episodes are. That is why I assumed what I did. The thing some fans like about his Doctor is that every little situation wasn't let's blow things up first and ask questions later. Re-watch the end of this episode. He would use his mind and fists (and sometimes a gun of some sort). I do wish the best though and Harbor no ill will. Just a T.V. show.. God bless. If you want to Tom has a wonderful Holiday wish on his Facebook site for all the fans you can watch.

Davros is such a frail creature, so easy to destroy. Grab his hand, hit a button and he's done for. How did he end up being such a powerful megalomaniac as seen in the Terry Molloy portrayal? How did he go from frail and barely mobile to a shouting, dictating tyrant with electric powers? Why the hell does he have a button that can kill him, and why isn't it something only he can access?

  • @Solitaire001

+captain0ldy0da Concerning the button that controls his life support, it is possible that it is a reboot button, needed in case his life support system is disrupted. I agree that having it as a button that can be accessed by anyone is a bad design unless it is the only possible place it can be located because of his physical condition (his arm is the only limb that he can use to access anything). What has seemed strange to me is that in his travels Davros has not used his skills to correct his own physical weaknesses. Although it is unlikely that it was available on Skaro at this time (just keeping Davros alive and functional might be all that could be done), as he as traveled he should have been able to acquire technology to correct the problems. As an example, I'm sure that the technology of the cybermen could be adapted by Davos to give him a more functional body (since improving the human body was the original reason for the development of the Mondas cybermen). However, it is possible that to correct his limitations Davros might have to leave himself completely vulnerable and that is something he can't abide. It is similar to a situation in "Transformers Beast Machines" where Megatron (not the same character as in the classic Transformers series) wants a completely robotic body purged of the organic (he transforms into a large dragon), but he won't risk the complete vulnerability that the process would require.

Agree completely. Tom Baker's first six stories together - the entire 6-story "Sarah, Harry and the 4th Doctor" arc- rate as some of the top moments ever in WHO history. It is a heck of a ride for the viewer, from ROBOT through TERROR OF THE ZYGONS, but for my money it is the best story arc the program has ever had. And that's saying a lot because WHO has had some outstanding story arcs, both Classic and New Series!

This scene alone makes me want to get the DVD set that has this serial. One of the most powerful moments in Doctor Who for me. It's too bad Davros (IMHO) was never as good after this. Sad they couldn't bring back the original Davros actor for later serials before he passed away in the 1990s.

Definitely. Although the "Do I have the right" discussion between Sarah Jane and the Doctor is probably the equal of this scene. Which explains the high esteem and high ranking held by GENESIS OF THE DALEKS for nearly 40 years now. The story is loaded with scenes like the two just mentioned!
