THE POWER OF THE DUKE - 71000 DUKE OF GLOUCESTER

71000: The Power of the Duke is devoted to exploring the myths and legends behind the most powerful Pacific at work in the British Isles today, the legendary BR Standard Class 8P 4-6-2 Pacific 71000 Duke of Gloucester. 71000 was built at Crewe Works in 1954, and was the only 3 cylinder locomotive to be built as part of the BR Standard design building programme, but with impending dieselisation, her BR career was always going to be short lived. Withdrawn after just 8 years service in November 1962, she arrived at Barry scrapyard in October 1967, and with one of her three cylinders removed and sectioned for display in the Science Museum, her restoration was always going to be regarded as a 'miracle of preservation.' This film explores the 'Duke' as she works on the main line, and we see 71000 as she storms along the world famous Settle & Carlisle, as she climbs Honiton bank on the Waterloo route to Exeter, before passing along the iconic sea wall between Dawlish & Teignmouth, and as she climbs the formidable South Devon banks, where we see her climbing Rattery and Hemerdon banks in order to reach the ancient naval city of Plymouth. We also see the 'Duke' at work on preserved lines, including at her home on the East Lancs, as well as on the North Yorkshire Moors, Mid Hants and Severn Valley. Finally, we conclude with a review of 71000 working the summer dated 'Torbay Express' workings over the Paignton & Dartmouth to Kingswear! #71000DukeofGloucester #SteamTrains #SteamEngines

God bless all those who helped to give this loco a second chance, the chance to prove just how good it could have been if it had been built right in the first place

Yes, some of your information is incorrect - it would be nice to put things to rights. Would you be willing to work with the custodians of The Duke - The BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust - they are confident he will be back in traffic next autumn (September 2021)? (I am a member of the Management Committee) During the current overhaul the opportunity is being taken to engineer improvements that will mean 71000 will finally be as Robert Riddles intended. You have some nice clips of The Duke and as his return approaches there will be more interest in the locomotive your video could be made part of the story.

I don't know where you got your info from about the D.O.G but as far as i know the duke was withdrawn at Crewe in 1962 it stayed at Crewe till aug 1967 as it was on the preserved list on engine that the B.R.B wanted to preserve but in the end she had her out cylinders removed at Crewe and the left hand cylinder was sectionalised for the science museum she went to BARRY ( WOODHAMS, BROS) with no out-side cylinders whilst at Barry she had her centre cam box stolen , she got it back years later the D.O.G society went to the museum to measure it for for two new cylinders they did a lot of research to why it was not a good steamer and found out from the plans that mistakes were made in her building by Crewe and as they say the rest is history

Never helped by the fact the Duke had a steam blower from a GWR Dean goods engine....of all things.

People seem to be oblivious that tractive effort does not make one engine stronger than another. It is mainly down to boiler power. Give a Pacific of any kind a Sentinel boiler with a 275psi and wheels from, say, a Terrier and the te will go up but that won't make it more powerful, quite the reverse. There are on record cases of a GN Atlantic, with a te of 17,000 odd, hauling trains that were, if an aged memory is working OK, in excess of 500 tons at speed. I don't think that, for instance, an LMS 2P with a similar te could come anywhere near that. The Atlantic had the boiler power.

In answer to boiler power/ tractive effort I would presume the boiler of the Duke of Gloucester looks perfectly capable of doing the job having followed on from the successful Britannia boiler. That was apparently designed with reference to that of the Merchant Navy one which itself was never short of steam.

All locomotives, like ships and warships, and many cars are always referred to in the female context. I believe it goes back to Latin sub-pronoun or something like that!! I know it can appear confusing at times!! lol
