Abuse in POW camps is all about who is in charge. You want even-tempered soldiers with no want of glory and no care one way or the other about the enemy. A good choice is the religious and medical soldiers, as they temd to see ”the enemy” as other humans to be treated with basic respect and cared for. Not every country has a volunteer army and even with wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, not all the men WANTED to be there (it was just the better option ). A tiny bit of human kindness can make everyone ’s lives easier is my motto and no sense using torture or other bothersome things when most prisoners respond if you treat them as human (keyword: most). One of the things I always keep in mind: Sadam Hussain was a FASTIDIOUS neat freak and being allowed to wipe his hands and small eating space made him grateful and compliant. He did horrid things, but small human kindnesses got through more than any beating or torture would.
