I mean… They started making a second record and realize that it just wasn’t going to be a special so they opted to quit and shelve the material. it was never meant to be anything more than a side project and when they tried to push it they realized they were right in that decision

I read these lines in a Pitchfork "Best of 2000s" review: "Give Up is mid-decade indie pop flawlessly preserved in amber .... Let’s appreciate the album for what it is: An exquisite time capsule that probably can’t-and probably shouldn’t-be duplicated." These words really struck me as perfect for The Postal Service.

It's been 16 years. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self how important this album would always be, and remember to listen to it when things got dark. It all holds up. The lyrics mean so much more after growing up and everything I've been thru. The heartbreak, the loss, the addiction. It's all represented in the lyrics here. I will be taking another journey with this album. Incredible.

I can't express how happy I am with what I hear AND SEE. Not only the great age of internet, but this music... I never could really define the sound of the 2000's but somehow this and Sigur Rós does it for me. There are many others of course, I only named two. Wow. Thanks, you got some amazing archive, subscribed, no hesitation.

My favorite part is in "Clark Gable" when Ben looks like he almost forgets to move to the drum booth, or maybe this is how they rehearsed it...... he barely made it to the mic, haha... his singing was all nervous, you could tell he almost botched the ending but still, brilliant... god, I miss this band, so much. Maybe we'll get a 20th anniversary tour or new music or something. I love DCFC but I feel the last ten years of their output hasn't really been great. C'mon, Ben and Jimmy... let's get the reunion going!

Jimmy Tamborello is so good. My mind was blown in high school when my sister showed me the Postal Service for the first time. Had never heard that crispy electronic aesthetic before. And really, I've never heard someone else make it quite like Jimmy. Dntel has a lot of good stuff (check out the song with Conor Oberst). But I bet Jimmy knew that Ben could take the music into the mainstream.... and therefore dumped all his effort into this album. That...and sticking to traditional verse / chorus structure helped to make these songs really accessible. Amazing stuff.

owl city took this sound and made several records out of it but nothing sounded as good as the postal service. this album is a masterpiece. not sure it can ever be duplicated. i agree about hearing this for the first time. people forget but in 2003 this was revolutionary. it was crisp but still felt analog somehow. kind of like digital ash by bright eyes. electronic but still feels warm

@@drinkingpoolwater Agreed. I love Digital Ash too. Owl City always made my skin crawl (not to hate). In a similar vein, have you ever heard of An Angle? In my mind, they were to Bright Eyes what Owl City was the Postal Service.... actually maybe a bit more egregious. Very interesting how some folks manage to pay homage to their idols respectfully and others seem so inauthentic. I think Owl City explicitly acknowledged his indebtedness to Postal Service though, which is half the battle.

@@andrewyeung7317 i have not heard "An Angle". i'll check it out. yea i never got into owl city. it was like the popular version of postal service - the mass marketed version. they never approached the authenticity of postal service. too cookie cutter sounding and corny.

Damn, when I was I’d middle school my sister also introduced me to Postal Service! I loved it and none of my friends understood why. Everyone at the time was listening to my chemical romance and panic at the disco.

@@eugeniobonello418 in my age group we were all listening to indie hip hop. then this hit and blew us away. we also discovered interpol, bright eyes, metric, etc around the same time. great time for music.
