I'm glad to hear from your review that there is so much "story" there. Nearly all of the talk I've heard about this book up to this point is the real history aspects of it. I've been delaying delivering this from my library for a while now.

There are about 3 chunks that are just real history info dumps....and they're boring, I'll be honest. She didn't deliver the info seamlessly in her style of writing, so it's really striking when you get to those parts.

@@TheNerdyNarrative Oh interesting. I was curious how that would translate into her fictional world... it sounds like not very seamlessly lol

Hahaha "were they just high?" That's a perspective I hadn't thought about, but that would certainly be interesting. This was a bit of a surprising hit for me - I can be kinda iffy with grimdark books, but this just worked so well. I'm excited for you to read the second one!

I may have to push The Dragon Republic to next month...I still have 5 books on the TBR this month that I haven't gotten to. I sort of haven't read in like 3 days....whoops! Surprised slump hit me.

I read this with a group on Instagram when it first came out, and I was the only one who liked it. Lol. They all thought it was too violent. I plan on rereading it and reading the second book right before the final book comes out.

I need to get the second one! I actually didn't think I was going to like it, but then it just reached up and GRABBED me and I was in love. It is violent, but that's a realistic representation of war times, so while it was difficult to read, I understood why it was there.

Loved this book, cracking open book 2 soon. If you like books like this, check out the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. More sci-fi based but just as gripping

This is on my TBR. Right now I am reading "True Evil" by Greg Iles and it is a wild ride from the getgo. I just finished "American Panda" by Gloria Chao and at age 44 I was a little hesitant to get into a teeny love story, but I gave it 5 stars. All the way. It was amazing. Yes, there was romance, but there was so much more. All the things I didn't know about Chinese traditions and how Chinese-American born people struggle to marry those two. It was a knockout. I wanted to tell you that "Wrath" came, I am still waiting on the other 3 books.

Is Greg Iles the author from Mississippi? I've heard really good things about him, so I need to check him out. You really have me curious about "American Panda" - I know you don't give 5 stars lightly and I don't mind if it has a little love in it, as long as there is still meat to the story. I'm adding that one to my list!! Yay, Wrath!!!! I still need to do my review on that one, it was so good!! I still think the second book was my absolute favorite, but Wrath was a very close second. 😊

@@TheNerdyNarrative that American Panda book took me by surprise. It was great. I'm pretty sure he's from Mississippi and "True Evil" has me hooked for now. It's over 500 pages so a lot can happen.
