I’ll be honest, it’s this video that really started to make me think twice about anti Catholic claims. I used to be very anti Catholic and while I’m not yet fully Catholic, I have been more convinced about Catholicism and have more respect moving forward.

Personally I lean more towards Eastern Orthodoxy but just like you I used to be very anti Catholic and believed that’s where the anti christ would rise up from but I think the best thing would be to question everything and never put all your eggs in one basket except when it comes to Jesus he is the only one we should put all our faith in not in a book or a church or a denomination just Jesus Christ the son of God

Christians relied on what leaders off the church told them and the letters of the apostles but there was no biblical cannon. The church had the number one authority. The first about 300 years of Christianity there was no set biblical cannon. The church had authority. The biblical cannon comes from the Catholic Church so it’s their book. The oldest bible we have is from the 4th century. So the first three centuries people relied on the church. God himself didn’t pick the cannon it was the Catholic Church. You trust the Catholic Church to tell you what books are the word of God but reject other beliefs? If the Catholic Church is wrong in areas it would make no sense for you to accept they have the word of God right. To reject the Catholic Church you need to reject their book the Bible. As long as you accept their bible you are under the Catholic Church authority. The original bible the apocrypha books in it until the 16th century until Luther chose to remove it. Protestants have changed the Bible by removing books. What gives Luther the right? The Bible cannon was picked by the early Christian leaders in the Catholic Church. These people were taught by people who learned from the original disciples then centuries later Protestants believe a man who never learned from the disciples or the disciples disciples. In conclusion why do Protestants trust the Catholic Church bible but not the Catholic Church. It was the church authority that picked the Bible cannon so the church has authority over the Bible because before the Bible was put together people only relied on the church. The Catholic Church is the only one that can interpret the Bible they put it together. If it weren’t for the Catholic Church Protestants wouldn’t even have their religion. You’re entire religion is based off the Bible the Catholic Church put together. To reject Catholicism you need to reject their book.

But first of all, it's "canon", not cannon like a weapon, although the papacy tries to use anything as a weapon when it needs to, including burning at the stake, and poisoning like the Jesuits swear to do in their oath of induction. They probably don't tell you that in the Mass though. How about them inquisitions and crusades? Would the true church do such mass murders? The papacy, being the biggest counterfeit cult to ever exist, has to use every lie possible to try to justify itself. And you repeated many of those lies they have indoctrinated you with . Where to start? The Bible you claim is "catholic" says that man doesn't live by bread alone, but every word from God. I don't want to have a huge back-and-forth, but I want to share some things I learned, in response to some things you said.. 1) - You said the office of the pope is unbiblical. It's true the English word pope is not in the Bible. A similar case is made by Jehovah's Witnesses about the Trinity. Although the word Trinity is not in the Bible, it is a biblical concept. I believe the same can be said about the office of pope, without the word 'pope'. a-Bishop is a biblical office. b-The pope is the bishop of Rome. c-Peter has always been historically understood to be the first bishop of Rome. d-The Bishops of Rome (whether from the Eastern, or Western lens of history) were always understood to have a historical primacy/precedence among the word's bishops, just as Peter is shown a form of primacy in various places in the Bible. e-Bishops of Rome, ie popes, have always been historically understood to be the successors of the apostles, and thus the popes would be the successor of saint Peter. We do not worship the pope, and the pope is a sinner who confesses his sins just like you and me. 2) - You say a sacerdotal priesthood is not mentioned.. I find your point of view unbiblical, actually. a- "Obey those who have the rule over you and submit yourselves, for they keep watch over your souls as ones who must give an account, that they may do it with joy and not with grief, for that is unprofitable for you." (Hebrews 13:17) b- Jesus said to the apostles, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:23) c- Jesus said to the apostles, "He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” (Luke 10:16) d- The apostles (and as has always been historically understood, their successors, ie the bishops) operated in the Person of Christ (Latin, In Persona Christ) to forgive sins. Paul wrote "To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ" (2nd Corinthians 2:10). e- Finally, James writes, "My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment." This is a subtle to point to make, though implicit in James' statement is that there are those with authority to teach in the Church, and those without. Not to mention that we derive our English "priest" from the Germanic word for 'presbyter' (go to google translate and translate 'priest' into German - then translate 'presbyter' into German. You will find they are the same word. And 'presbyter' is definitely a biblical office, along with bishop and deacon. 3) - About subordinating oneself to the pope, again we do not worship the pope, and grovel at his feet. There are/were faithful Christians, then and now, (beginning with Paul) who have had the boldness to stand up the pope when they were not exercising their office in a godly way (again, infallibility is not impeccability, but I don't want to start a whole separate conversation). The point of 'submitting to the pope' is submitting to what Christ gave us as a visible form of authority until He comes again. A non-Christian may say to you, >>"Are you going to submit to some words on a page?" But if you believe these words are divinely preserved by God, then it's a different discussion. Similarly, submitting to pastor Bob on his own authority is heinous, yes -- but if Peter and his successors received a special grace from God to lead and guide the Church in truth, keeping it free from the stain of error in it's official teachings - - - -Matthew 16:18 (compare with Isaiah 22:21-23) -Luke 22:31-32 -John 21:15-17 -1st Timothy 5:17 -1st Timothy 3:15 - - - then again, submitting to this authority is a different discussion. So while the several *tens of thousands* of Protestant denominations continue to fall by the wayside in terms of doctrines like: -- -contraception -divorce -remarriage -abortion -gay marriage -female clergy -gay clergy -the doctrine of hell -the Virgin Birth -The Infallibility of Scripture -The Infallibility of Christ's Nature/Character/Teachings -The bodily Resurrection of Christ -The Bodily Resurrection at the end of days -The exclusivity of salvation in Christ -The literal belief in a literal God (no, this is not a joke - some Christian denominations do not mandate that their flocks actually believe that God is real, and teach ambiguously on God's actual existence from the pulpit.) -- and can't seem to agree on a single doctrine other than that a), Rome is wrong, and b), 66 out of the 73 books that Rome gave them are right, I will try my best to remain faithful to the One, Holy, Universal (which is to say, Catholic) and apostolic Church which Christ founded. Or Matthew 16:15-19 where Jesus told Peter he was the rock, upon which He would build His CHURCH (not churches or denominations) and the gates of hell would not prevail against it, and He would give Peter the KEYS TO THE KINGDOM, that whatever Peter bound on earth would be bound in heaven? He clearly DID say there would be an authority, that it would be HIS CHURCH, and also that, as in Luke 10:16, all who reject it, reject HIM. If you need to be reminded of any more of those 'pesky' bible verses that DO mention the ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC CHURCH that our Lord left us, I'll do my best. The Pope was sent to prison not just by Napoleon. French king Phillip IV also captured the pope and kept him as a prisoner in Rome for three days in 1303. Why wasn't the mortal wound in 1303? Problem is these guys do not know history too well and they never investigate what they are taught.

@YAJUN YUAN End of the Holy Roman Empire ended in 1806 after the Austrian Emperor Francis I was defeated by Napoleon. Some churches teach that the Roman Empires will be reconstituted. Maybe so, but it had two sides not just the west. Others teach that the Roman Empire never ended and it resides in the papacy. Well whatever.

Why does it have to be 1798 when French troops entered Rome and arrested the Pope. Well, because 1798 fits the dispensationalist narrative of the Adventists that is why. If you want to be picky here these are all the times Rome was sacked: 390 BC 410 AD 455 AD 546 AD 1084 AD 1527 AD Here are all the dates the Pope was taken prisoner 1303 1798 In 1527 the Pope hid from the Landsknecht so it was self jailing or something like that. The Adventists are dead wrong that the Papacy lost temporal power in 1798. It did not since it owned the Papal States until 1870. Just nonsense.

For the life of me, I’ve never understood why people leave Catholicism to be Protestant. To me, Protestantism in any form is silly. I got into reading the Bible on my own, and even from reading it on my own, it was evident that if you believe Jesus is lord, you understand Catholicism is the church he founded.

If a plain-text reading was all that it took to arrive at Catholicism, there would be no need to hold either the magisterium or traditions of the fathers as authoritative, as the Roman Catholic Church does. You definitely can’t read something like Matthew 16 and be certain that your modern Catholic interpretation is correct, at least not without disagreeing with multiple early church fathers. Ultimately you need to either hold to the Catholic position that they / the Pope has been given the authority to interpret scripture or the Protestant position that the Bible is clear enough that a plain-text reading is enough to derive the truth on your own - you can’t have it both ways.

Catholicism is more that Mat 16. It's the whole Catechism. No other denomination fits in the bible. You need to rewrite the bible to make Protestant denominations fit, which is what they do. They rewrite the bible.

@@InitialPC I would agree with that thought except that so many non-Catholics go to therapists and confess all sorts of stuff. I'm not ignorant to the idea that the elements involved are far beyond my understanding, but I know there is a particular aversion to confessing to a priest, even when we explain we are confessing to God and God is granting us forgiveness through the priest.

I’ve actually shown the Kenneth Copeland video to my 5th grade catechism classes when we discuss the Reformation, and the understanding of the words “Catholic” and “catholic”. They always find it fascinating and I get bombarded by questions the next week by the kids themselves and sometimes their parents as well. Of course, as kind of a breather for 11 and 12 year olds the Simpson’s video clip of the Protestant versus the Catholic version of Heaven. As my catechism class is mostly Hispanic or partly Irish, they think it’s pretty funny. Before I get criticized for showing one clip of the Simpsons, I also want to state that I incorporate the Great Divorce by CS Lewis in describing Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.

One of SDAs tactic is to take a quote from less known works or write up by an individual and tries to represent it as the official teaching of the Church. I haven't seen them quoting from official documents of the Church. That's their way of deceiving people.

That Our Sunday Visitor article should be a warning to all of us when it comes to making statements. If we as Catholics write something down incorrectly, we can correct ourselves later, but the mistake will be used by SDA's for the next century. I read an SDA book I was sent in the mail which articulates with precision nearly identical claims, and most of the time they seek to substantiate it with inconsequential catholic sources (like a newspaper, or a priest who taught in the 19th century who was apparently just a lecturer who published no actual books) who made incorrect, imprecise, or overly triumphalist claims. We all must be careful when we are engaging in apologetics!

@@drjanitor3747 It's worse than that. Technically, the papacy was instituted hundreds of years before Christ's birth. The pope is the pontifex maximus. This was a religious office in Rome in the early Republic since around 500 B.C.E. So the first pope was a pagan guy in Rome 500 years before Christ. Of course that's following the letter of the law, not its spirit. So maybe we could be less pedantic? That's unless you think my point about the Church fathers being sinners is incorrect? Do we need to discuss Abraham's marrying his sister then pimping her out? (Again, not true if your a pendant, but not something a normal person would accept as polite behavior.) Or how about St. Paul's culpability in the murder of St. Stephen? We are all sinners. None are worthy. That includes the pope. It includes me. It's something we have in common as a Church. That such vile men were accepted by God gives me hope for my eternal future.

The bible states that Jesus came to bring the sword and the devil will bring peace and destruction.. Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

My mom is nearing the end of life, and I just found out her sister has been preaching SDA to her, or more accurately disparaging the Catholic faith. I'm certainly not worried that my mom will convert to their beliefs, but it is frustrating that my aunt is like this. And I know I cannot say anything to her about it because I am still a long way from 'evangelizing with a heart of kindness'.
