The Pond On My Window Sill - Ecosphere Week 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Last week, I scooped a jar of muddy water and weed out of a local pond, sealed it and placed it on my north facing window sill, in an experiment to create a sealed ecosphere.
Let's have a look at some of the things I saw in there during the first week...

I never saw one either under the microscope. We looked at pond water with water fleas and such and we looked at onion and tomato cells. That's what really got me hooked up and ignited my love for biology. Sadly in school the microscope time was very limited. At University I then was able to work with the microscope again. Then met bacteria and viruses under the microscope and body cells. I loved to sit for hours in dark and quiet rooms, just to examinate my probe under the microscope and take notes about it and experiment with it. Up to this day, using the microscope always gets me hyped up. I love looking at things under the microscope. This tiny world of unseen things. It's just amazing.

When I was in primary school back in the late 1950s, my favourite subject was Nature Studies (primary school science). We performed an experiment similar to this. We boiled up a handful of grass to form a nutrient soup. When it cooled, we inoculated it with an eyedropper full of water from a puddle after rain. Each day we took a drop and examined it under a microscope. After a few days we observed micro organisms in the drop. As the days rolled on the population grew and grew until it was teeming with micro organisms. I was fascinated. As the days rolled on the population began to subside, until eventually they died out to the point that we could no longer see any. When the resources were exhausted, the dense population could no longer be sustained. I presumed a subset of the organisms continued in the soup. This has stuck with me all my life, and I took it as a good example of how a closed environment has limited resources. While not a perfect analogy of our planet, it does show what can happen when there are limited resources, and limited space for our waste.

This is horrifying and fascinating. The microscopic world freaks me out, and knowing that everything that is happening in that jar happens... well, everywhere... is disconcerting at best. Your presentation and earnest nature, though, is so calming and downright professional that I couldn't turn away. Very impressive.

This show is awesome. I am looking forward to more Atomic Shrimp, especially in the world of biology. Fried crickets, mushroom hunts, stinging nettle soup, and now microscopic wonders presented in exquisite documentary form with music that flows perfectly. This is just plain rad. I hope your own enthusiasm for subject matter takes precedence over relevance or feedback. I'm glad you value our feedback, but I hope you continue to do what you dig.

Question: Why did you seal the jar shut and won’t that eventually starve the life inside of it of oxygen? Or will the algae produce enough to sustain it?

Seems one of your limiting factors in survivability is that the jar is sealed, so there is no chance for even osmotic re-oxygenation. Perhaps v2.0 could be one jar that is sealed, and another that is (relatively, can't have flatworms busting up the flat) open to the air.

My thoughts exactly gnomespace. Lack of oxygen will eventually kill everything off, even the plants. However, if you provide for oxygen the water will evaporate. Like many ecosystems, this one is also limited by time and circumstances. Very cool video Atomic Shrimp.
