The Politicization of Music | John Morris Russell | TEDxWrigleyville

No one has ever before given a talk on the connection between politics and music. How is patriotism best expressed in sound? What is the history of American music and its political implications? In his unique and insightful TEDx talk, “The Politicization of Music,” John Morris Russell, a renowned and brilliant conductor, vividly details the intersection of patriotism and music. A master of American musical style, John Morris Russell has devoted himself to redefining the American orchestral experience. In his tenth year as conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the wide-range and diversity of his work as a conductor, collaborator and educator continues to reinvigorate the musical scene throughout Cincinnati and across the continent. As Music Director of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina, Mr. Russell leads the classical subscription series as well as the prestigious Hilton Head International Piano Competition; he also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, following in the footsteps of Marvin Hamlisch and Doc Severinsen. As a guest conductor, JMR has worked with many of the most distinguished orchestras in North America. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I understand the aversion to “politics” but I can’t find myself agreeing with this dude when I know that politics is just the application of morality/ ideology through the process of government. If something is a question of morality then it’s a question of politics as well. The deep pockets of our representatives only get deeper when people decide that they don’t want to participate in politics. We should be engendered with love, rage, peace, chaos, etc. through the music we listen too. That is what experiencing art is all about. Trying to separate the two is like trying to have your cake and eat it too. We won’t be able to find the peace that we’re all looking for when we turn ourselves off to the messages of the art we consume.

When I was little, I watched my sister as she would listen to music from the 60s ,70s mostly and I remember asking her "yuck! Why does every song have to be about love?" She said, "because love is everything. Love is even you and me". That hit home with me. ♡

“Somehow I can't believe that there are any heights that can't be scaled by a man who knows the secrets of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four Cs. They are curiosity, confidence, courage, and constancy, and the greatest of all is confidence. When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionable.” ― Walt Disney

This guy has obviously studied theories of communication involving the use of mannerisms, expressions, and body movements to generate certain emotional responses from the audience. He's just incapable of putting these theories into practice, because he's a lizard man and he has no human pathos.
