Lyrics:
Young teacher, the subject
Of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be
Inside her there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking, she's so close now
This girl is half his age
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabokov
Don't stand so close to me
Please don't stand so close to me

I'm shocked that there hasn't been a comedy skit or a gag where someone finds out about a teacher-student relationship, and shouts "CALL THE POLICE!", prompting *The Police* to show up and sing this song.

Their songwriting is actually really interesting. As opposed to just writing a song in a major or minor key throughout, they often made the verses in a minor key and then snapped to major for the chorus.

Well, they learned from the best...David bowie for one.
I love the way the song starts with the little guitar riff and the ominous bass note. The way that changes a bit but continues through the first verse then completely changes up in the chorus. It's like Prog Pop! I've listened to this song for decades but just lately come to appreciate it even more.

A lot of ominous notes in Police songs. Usually something foreboding and off-kilter, a lot of chromatic songs, relatively few happy diatonic tracks.

Thank you guys for the exposure to the new words! "Ominous," "diatonic "......etc... This is what I love about music. Learning! Unfortunately I left school at the very young age of 15. However, I feel enriched with the education and knowledge that I have obtained through lyrics of music and people speaking about music. I wouldn't have the vocabulary that I have today had I not loved music the way that I do. I wish you guys a great day! ❤😊

One of the best bands from 78 -85.
I was in high school when The Police released Don't Stand So Close To Me and I liked it then as it was a big hit for them and it got a lot of airplay on the radio but now it's even better. If you got to grow up in the 50's through the 90's with all the golden classic movies & music, YOU were blessed.
You got to hand it to the Police. They really brought on the next decade. Such unique sound and sensibilities, such great songwriting and aesthetic. Not just Sting and Stewart, gotta give credit to Andy Summers and his way of sort of washing sound over the track. Nobody sounded like them, before or since.

Sting could be my teacher any day of the week. So gorgeous
Sting is such a great bassist tho. People usually talk about his songwriting skills & vocal but his bassline is always SOLID! They're my fav trio ever. What a super talented musicians.
How cool is it that Sting is wearing an English Beat t-shirt in this video?

I dont think people realize how unique The Police were for their time and how many bands they inspired. Stings vocals and bass lines were incredible, the production was masterful. I consider them one of the greatest 3 pieces, and to top that one of the greatest bands ever.
Clearly is his major success , mainly for the music.
Mr Sumner, I need help with my homework after school
It's ironic how I listened to this song years ago when I was in middle school and had a crush on my teacher, and I'm still listening to it because I still like men way older.... some things never change Edit: Actually dating a middle school teacher now, as an adult 😂 Edit: we broke up 😢

If we're going biologically... scientifically women mature faster than boys, that's why most women prefure older men who have already matured rather than the little boys they end up babysitting.

@Blaise 2067 Bullshit. There's never been more than a couple of girls in any of my groups (Highschool and Uni) who fancied older men, maybe 10% of the total. As for myself I always ever since teenage liked guys a couple of years older and at 40 something I prefer men by a fair margin younger and I wasn't the only one. Yes there are women who like older men. But "natural"? Nope, it's not the standard and the only reason women mated with older men for eons was because they were married before they had a choice by the parents decisions.
This song is so cool...
It's ironic that he's a teacher in that track, and, he truthfully used to be a teacher

Wow! Aren't you a prodigy! Did you also get the part about the teacher having feelings for the student too and yet knowing that it's inappropriate? Hence the song title.
Lyrics: Young teacher, the subject Of schoolgirl fantasy She wants him so badly Knows what she wants to be Inside him, there's longing This girl's an open page Book marking, she's so close now This girl is half his age Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Her friends are so jealous You know how bad girls get Sometimes it's not so easy To be the teacher's pet Temptation, frustration So bad it makes him cry Wet bus stop, she's waiting His car is warm and dry Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Loose talk in the classroom To hurt they try and try Strong words in the staff room The accusations fly It's no use, he sees her He starts to shake and cough Just like the old man in That book by Nabokov Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me Don't stand, don't stand so Don't stand so close to me

Synchronicity is definitely not underrated, it was in fact their biggest success (and for a good reason) and they were already huge when it was released, so guess what. Zenyatta Mondatta might be underrated but Police themselves don't have a high opinion on it either, it sounds very rushed out and underproduced like they actually admit.
