The Polestar 2 Single Motor Long Range: Much Improved - With Room To Grow

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A few years ago we got the chance to test out the Polestar 2 for the first time - and we had some opinions: • 2022 Polestar 2 Review
But since then, Polestar has re-engineered the drivetrain and battery pack of its single-motor Polestar 2 - and made it a rear-wheel drive rather than front-wheel drive variant.
And that, we think, has transformed the Polestar 2 in a very positive direction indeed.

The biggest advantage Polestar's navigation system has is the ability to manually add multiple waypoints/destinations and have the car predict how much range you will have at each one. You can plan out a whole day of running errands all over town, and know ahead of time if you will have enough range to make it to all those places and home again 😎

I've got just over 10,000 miles on my 2024 RWD (USA) and just loving the car so far. Previous car was a 2019 Tesla Model 3 RWD LR. The Polestar is just a much more well rounded experience, in my opinion. Excellent for road trips, cabin comfort is excellent. I'm personally not bothered by the cup holder situation. Do I wish the Chinese weren't so involved with the Polestar brand, sure do. That's the one (fairly large) concern that I have with them.

I don't think of it as "the Chinese." I think more of Geely, a solid parent company that's located in China, has done a great job with their acquisitions. The only thing I don't like about Geely is they have too many brands now that overlap therefore compete with each other. Otherwise, they're solid. Another thing Geely has done is set up CEVT in Sweden so Zeekr and Lynk and Co. have a lot of Swedish design and engineering expertise in those cars as well. And their chief platform engineer is Swedish.

@@TuomasLeone Not me. Because under Ford, a US entity, Volvo had far more Ford parts in them than common parts that Geely has in Volvos and Volvo was not thriving. Volvo is thriving under Geely and has far more Volvo input into their own vrand than they had under Ford (which delayed and then killed their XC90 update so it ran 12 years). And Saab flat out died under GM. It all comes down to the company, not the nationality, what is good for a purchased brand. Geely hasn't interfered much and I feel it is a bias against the idea of a Chinese company owning a Western one that bothers people. For me this isn't politics. China is just one government that I dislike, but I like Saudi Arabia equally as much if not more and Western countries do business with them. A European or US company may have changed Volvo or even merged them into some other company so I'm pleased that Volvo found a parent company that empowered them and help them keep their brand identity.

@@benjaminsmith2287 As a former SAAB owner, I understand. I should have qualified this with "all things being equal". That said the degree to which the Chinese government violates human rights and is a fundamentally undemocratic state cannot be denied. Those things do matter to me and for that I wish Polestar would somehow (again all other things being equal) be separated from Chinese ownership.

  • @benjaminsmith2287
    @benjaminsmith22873 ай бұрын

The Geely ownership is so overblown. This is a full out Volvo with Polestar engineering. It was a Volvo first and Volvo didn't use the body so Polestar did. Look up Volvo Concept 40.2 and it's there. I like that the history of Polestar was given and such but don't like at all it being called a "Chinese" company or car. It's a Swedish company with a Chinese parent company and Geely has been excellent in being one for Volvo, Lotus, Polestar and London Cab in that the companies have kept their structure, management, home base and pretty much, their autonomy. The 2 is getting long in the tooth and the 3, 5 and 6 are Polestar's current design language. The 4 is curiously built on a Zeekr framework and is contemporary as well. I think Polestar's finances will turn out fine in time. Since Polestar was a racing company they do dynamic qualities well and that, Swedish design and engineering (with a bit of Geely corporate synergies), emphasis on sustainability, high build quality and safety, is why one gets this car. Tesla is completely different, a more tech based car. Its strengths are different. I don't so much see Polestar competing with Tesla more than being a European based premium EV that's an alternative to German and Italian cars.

If you don't need the top range and fastest charging, do yourself a favor and just get a fully loaded used one. Any year, dual motor, performance, pilot, plus - leather if that's your thing or need ventilated seats. Performance software upgrade if you like it extra spicy. It's an incredible amount of car for the extreme depreciation it's seeing right now. The dual motor variant gives almost too much confidence in the wet, ice, and snow. Performance pack adds the manually adjustable suspension. Performance software is probably the cheapest 68hp upgrade in automotive history. Pilot and plus add the creature features you'd expect (some of which have become standard in '24.) Will some other EV have better specs and range for less? Probably. Do you need all that power? Probably not. Is it a really nice place to be and a ton of fun? Absolutely. It's an incredible package with some people snagging them for under $30k. Newer, lower miles, or CPO are still under $40k (roughly $30k off MSRP.)

What looked like minor damage took $8k to the insurance company and several months waiting on parts from the Volvo dealer (in 2023). The fit and finish is great, but the center tunnel makes it cramped up front (Im 5'10) and not great even for teens in the back. I think this car is for young singkes or couples who occasionally put something or someone in the back. Its very good looking, but I prefer my old BMW i3 for around town without kids (it feels roomier).

I think it’s almost the ideal weather to review a car. It’s all well and dandy, when the sun’s shine and the average temp. is north of 29°C and fast approach 36°C. When the whole review doesn’t necessitate the use of the wipers, so viewers can’t see how good/bad the wipers are; and when the lights aren’t needed. so viewers can’t see how good the lights are or how much draw there is on available power; or use of the cabin heater, to see if it’s able to keep the windows mist free; or how good the factory fitted tyres are at coping with anything less than perfect tarmac on a dry day. After all, it’s dandy stating a car has this much range on the perfect summer’s day. And spending 8secs. to say winter range will be less. I can’t speak for others but I for one, do not drive less far and less often, just because it’s sub 0°C. So while a vehicle is potentially capable of a given range, when it’s hot enough to cook eggs on slate. The info is barely useful to those that are driving 5mths. of the year, in temps. cold enough to allow cannon balls to roll around the decks. If anything, I reckon more auto reviews should been done in adverse driving conditions.

No comment on the HUGE difference favoring PS2 over Model 3, and a place where PS put the money in where Elon didn’t- the screen behind the steering wheel. Having Google maps directly in front of the driver, while the large central screen can show climate, radio or performance separately, is HUGE! No need to use phone for Google maps, and no need to take eyes from the road and look right to see map before crucial turn or exit. The loss of a screen with map and speed directly in front of driver is a deal breaker for me on the Model 3.

(1) The Pilot Assist in that car must have some kind of problem because it works flawlessly in mine, through all weathers, and road markings in my country are…How should I put it?...Less than perfectly maintained. (2) The car DOES have auto windshield wipers. I can’t fault you for not finding how it works, because I went almost all the ownership time with my previous Volvo XC40 also thinking it didn’t have that feature. (3) Polestar is NOT in financial trouble. You shouldn’t echo what click baiters post. Dive into the matter and you’ll understand what really happened, financially-wise.

I keep trying to find a reason to trade it for something newer, but there's simply nothing to justify it, aside maybe from better range, but now that Tesla supercharger access is coming, not even that is an issue anymore... I maybe will try and pester the Polestar Space about how to go about retrofitting the new "non-grill" for the heating, because it gets annoying in the snow, but given that people successfully did it (both newer grill on older car and the other way around) it might be simple enough. An EV with RWD and proper snow tires works pretty well because of its weight - I drive an MY24 LRSM myself and have tried heavy snowy conditions. 4. I think you may have found the " old man's " EV. And I happen to be an old man. When the lease is up on my Outback a Polestar might be right for me.

My past experience of Volvo was not a good one. I was given a navy 340 3-door that had been thrashed by various members of my cousin’s company. I’d not even considered another Volvo since.

That sounds like you were just given a trashed car. Doesn't matter what the brand is when the vehicle has been treated like crap.

Polestar 2 refresh should appeal to buyers who don't like the Tesla Model 3 refresh because of the lack of indicator stalks; lack of parking ultrasonic sensors; lack of fog lights; Lack of buttons; and the added advantage of more practicality of the Polestar 2 being a hatchback. The new RWD Polestar 2 single motor’s has 320-mile EPA range and faster charging speed. Other upgrades include an increase of 69 horsepower (299 total) and 118 extra lb-ft of torque (361 lb-ft in all). Additionally, the 440V platform can charge as high as 220 kW, charging 10-80% in 25-28 mins - a 20% speed increase, according to Polestar. Bjørn Nyland youtube video titled “Polestar 2 LR SM refresh charging test” shows the refresh 2024 Polestar 2 has much better charging speed - better than Tesla Model 3 and VW iD4. Polestar 2 will get the $7500 USA EV Tax credit if you lease the vehicle. The new Polestar 3 will be built in the USA at one of the Volvo factories so will qualify for the EV tax credits. The new 2024 Polestar 4 may also be of interest.

Contrast this with PS being a smaller OEM that parent company Geeley has calved off and PS is actually going broke. Reports from Reuters suggest PS need $1.3B USD to keep going to end 2025 and nobody is coming up with the money. It doesn’t own the intellectual property of the things that make it really good so the value can’t be quantified. By this car new (it’s stupidly expensive where I am) and you may own an orphan in 2026

I don't agree with the statement At the end about long term support financially, not fair and far from accurate. Polyester owned by Volvo ad the whole thing is own by geely. Geely and Volvo are listed in their respective stock market. At worse, polyester will be incorporated with Volvo rather than own entity. Polestar is expanding to be made in USA and have launched polestar 3 and 4 already. I own polestar 2, the olds version, 2022 and I love it more than my other EV! It's a driver car.

Sounds like they really improved the car to where it is sort of competitive but still pricey. Still doesn't qualify for US federal tax credit, correct?
