I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Clouds are drifting across the moon Cats are prowling on their beat Spring's a girl from the streets at night Dirty old town Dirty old town I heard a siren from the docks Saw a train set the night on fire I smelled the spring on the smoky wind Dirty old town Dirty old town I'm gonna make me a good sharp axe Shining steel tempered in the fire I'll chop you down like an old dead tree Dirty old town Dirty old town I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town

A friend of mine was living in Vienna in the 80s, and one afternoon he’s in his local bar having a quiet half-litre. As he’s sitting there he notices a group of guys at the bar asking the barman for directions. They didn’t speak German and the barman didn’t speak English so the conversation was going was nowhere. My friend knew where they wanted to go, so offered to show them the way. And so began a mad night of drinking with the Pogues.

@All of those guys^ Of course the pubs aren’t at their height right now, what with the virus. But from my experience, pubs in Ireland are still awesome. Everyone standing up, singing some song I can hardly understand the words to, so loudly that it doesn’t matter that the band’s drunk. There are still pubs like this. You’ll just have to venture outside of Dublin.
Rest in Peace Shane. 😥
I was 17 years old when I discovered the Pogues. I still remember holding their album in a store in Montreal, Canada. I had heard a song and couldn't wait to hear the rest. On the back of the album was a note dedicating it to the victims of the stadium that had crumbled, killing tons of people. I am now 53 and still listen to them regularly. We're in 2024 and Shane will be sorely missed. Rest in one piece and forever with us and your unique verses, great poet of lost souls.
He would be proud of the send off he got in Ireland. Singing on the streets dancing in the church. A true Irish legend.
