Good Monday morning JD, another good story as i drink my first cup of hot strong black coffee. I have an Old Timer pocket knife, i know longer carry it , i have it put away so i won't loose it . I reckon young guys don't carry a pocket knife anymore. My Dad always carried an old timer pocket knife. He loved to set under a shade tree and whittle. Spit and whittle. I wasn't raised in the Appalachian mountains but i enjoy taking road trips and going through some of them. If i had to live in any other state besides eastern Oklahoma it would be in Tennessee or North Carolina. Have a good week JD. Reckon i better read a couple of chapters in my Bible before i watch the morning news. Pray for this nation JD. Im shocked by all the evil taken place these days. This nation needs to turn back to God.

I’m a younger guy and I carry a pocket knife everyday, that’s just how my pops raised me. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in Alabama. I’ve noticed most guys my age and younger don’t really carry a pocket knife, I don’t understand it but then again I don’t understand the way the world is now either.

This chapter should be titled "The Mud Hole." Very little about the pocket knife, which we called a jackknife back in New England. Today, everyone in my family that totes a jackknife carries a traditional Barlow.

My grandpa always whittled under a shade tree after the day’s work was done, his knife was always razor sharp. I was a young boy and I would ask to borrow his knife from time to time, he would always hand it to me and say, “here, take it and go cut yourself”, I always did just that. When he was in his 90’s someone bought him a new pocket knife, he handed it to me to check it out and I proceeded to cut myself with it! I was always a pretty skilled craftsman and handy with all kinds of tools, except grandpa’s knife.

Yea, I used to get some pretty incredible stories from my papaw and dad too. They always seemed to have just enough truth to them to be believable. It’s untelling how many times I was able to use just a little piece of one or another story to get through a problem of my own. Thanks J. D. for taking us along this time.

@@theappalachiachannel Thank you I really enjoyed your story. I remember my Grandpa showing me how to start a fire with flint and steel. His family when he was little one lived too far from the nearest store to keep up with the need for matches and two they couldn't afford to spend money on them as back where they lived hard cash was in short supply from when he was born 1902 up to around 1940 it wasn't really easy until the mid 1950s. A lot of the people lived by doing a lot of bartering.
