Plaintain has been one of my favorite herbs. It is not native to the US but came here from Europe. Glad it did. A Cherokee lady told me they used it to heal sprains as well.
I am so excited to have found your videos . The above plant was one of my favorite nibbles when I was a little kid with an obsession with Wise-women/witches which I one day hoped to become myself . Full circle and now entering crone-age, so cool to be able to find this information on the internet ...yeah ! Now just need that little cabin in the woods and hope the villagers aren't into dunking their local witches .
@FenderGibsonWashburn Happy to help Paul ;o) Yes not all weeds are as useless as we sometimes make them out to be. Always good to find something if value you didn't know you had - Like finding a tenner in the pocket of some trousers you haven't worn for a few months :o)

Weeds are not useless at all, in fact they are the bandaids of the earth. You will notice that wherever the grass covering of the earth has been removed, and the earth layed bare there grows the weeds. If you allow the weeds to grow thru the season, and leave them alone for a year, you will find that the grass has grown back under them, and reestablished itself. The weeds can go, and there you go, you got new lawn. You see, the weeds provide cover and healing to the earth, therefore, they also have medicinal value for us. Did God not say to eat every herb bearing seed in itself, and every fruit, bearing seed in itself, to you they shall be for food. Weeds are valuable. Thank God for them.
Thank you for posting. Informational. I have loads of this outside our home. Thank you
Psyllium is a plantain which grows in India. It is in the same genu,s Plantago, as is the narrow-leaved plantain discussed here.
This is one of the absolute best informational videos I have ever found on the web. Thorough, easy to understand, with high quality video footage. Thanks for posting this. I appreciate the varied uses that are described, and the care taken to show and describe the plant.
(Wife's account) You are so at ease, very relaxed. Really nicely done video.
Thank you I'll teach this to my son. God's Blessings be upon you!!

I am such a fan of Rick Van! Thank you for this one. I have alot growing wild, and just got a large woodland variety. Will be sharing this!
I have so much of this growing in my lawn, and think that they look quite beautiful! I decided to uproot a few of them and rinse the roots clean. We are going to attempt to grow them in our 29gallon planted fish tank...can't wait to see the results!
A million thank yous! I just found your channel and am so excited about learning more!!! I am a nurse buy trade but have always been frustrated with the side effects of modern medicine. So, i have been reading and searching the web for a great way to learn more about medicinal herbal medicine. Your a great teacher and giving close ups of the plant is something that is a must. Thanks ~ Mara
@WhiteTeaRoses315 Thanks Christine, It's also known as the Ribwort and I inderstand it grows just about everywhere. Not sure about the rib injury, i'll have to drink some plantain tea and see. Swings are always fun, and compulsory when on holiday :o)
It is called the same thing here in the States. I have found it in New York clear down to Georgia.
Very good video! Many thanks!
Thanks mister for your valuable video.
Thanks for saying so many things in such a short time!

@TheVbird420 Thanks for the great commenst - glad you found it useful. I tend to refer to "food for free" a lot plus "hedgerow medicine" - both available on amazon
Excellent video, Thank You for sharing.
Thanks Rick, I've been using plantain leafs for many years to relive bee stings. Works great and found most anywhere.
Thanks for the information. I had never heard of plantain before.I use a lot of mullein and comfrey, after watching some videos about this plant I started looking around the yard! The landlord didn't put down any weed killer this yr, so I found all kinds of small plants growing at the edge of the lawn. I dug them out and put them in my herb garden, hopefully they will take root and I will have some for next summer!
Thank you Rick, really interesting. I'm trying to learn more about natural remedies and store up some recipes.
This is EXACTLY what I was searching for. Thanks for sharing. Guess what I'm going to go and do now? Plantain picking!
Thank you, Rick!
Hi ! I live in Brittany, just across the Channel from you and needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) the land around my house is litterally covered with plantains. I just recenly started cooking them with stinging nettles into a fabulous green soup that is just as good either hot or cold. Thanks for the great advise anyway ! Seb from France ;o)
The most informative video on this planet I have found. Thank you
@Epiphanized I hear you. I personally find myself gravitating more towards "Nature knows best". I appreciate to some, that makes me sound like a total Philistine, but I feel there is a certain, tragic arrogance in man's haste to claim we know better than nature. I figured out a long time ago that Modern medicine is all about wealth, not health, but that's a whole other debate :o) The spirit of this video is all about being self sufficient and being independent of big pharma.

This comment aged well. You were certainly proved correct in 2022.
Thanks for the excellent information 😘
I have used plantain a lot with great results. It's a great diuretic too. Blackberry root and leaves are also easy to identify and is a great herb.

Thank you very much for your very informative video which in my opinion was done very nice....shalom my friend
Love your description "Nature's answer to Savlon"
I found out about the stinging nettle thing quite by accident. I accidentally grabbed a handful after forgetting to put on my gloves, then started grabbing bunches of leaves from every plant I could see and grinding them to paste on tree bark and using that on my hand. The plantain was the first thing that worked.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing...
An Awesome, Very Educational & Easy to Understand Video! Thank You :-)
fab vid I love this plant, use it for lots of stuff and it's the best blood stopper I know, it's saved both me and my dogs from having to get stitches in the past.

Do NOT eat the plant if you are not sure..., plantain is very often mistaken with FOXGLOVE. a VERY poisonous plant. poisonous enough to kill you. please be careful.
@riverrat2993

im very careful. been eating it over 15 years now. first plants in and around your area you should learn is all the poisonous plants. to touch, to eat, ect. after that then learn plants as food/ medicin/ cordage/ firemaking/ shelter/ stains/ectect.to do so otherwise is just a mistake waiting to happen. because some plants such as water hemlock can kill you buy eating it, letting it get into your bloodstream through a cut, the smoke from it if burned, ect.
Awesome job thank you
We have some giant broad leaf plantain in the yard...the leaves somehow got as big as my head O_o definitely a good use.
Thanks. Very useful. I just found some plants along my walk here in Northern California.

Perfectly said.
thank you, i have been trying to shift a dreadful chesty cough, plantain will be picked tomorrow :)
very informative thankyou however I was told the ribbed plaintain u showed can make u sick if u eat too much. The broad leaf plantain is best in salads you can eat as much as u like. Thanks again
great vid packed with vital information thanks best wishes hardy
Like it ! Like it! I chew the seeds while on walkabout as some reckon it helps prevents little critters havin' a chew on one ( unsure it works, but they taste nice!) but I wasn't aware of it's antiseptic properties! Personally I think nettle stings are healthy but they can really upset kids so your advice is 'sage', I mean plantain! Extremely useful and highly enjoyable video's! I really like your close in, informal, friendly 'swingin' style Rick, all the best and have a great day too, Apache
@plavins1 It's royalty free music from The Footage Firm - called 'Softer_full' from Their Business Volume 2 album :o)
Love my plantain
thank you very much for this video. well done and infomative. you just may have saved some ones life. good job my friend. thank God for bringing people like you to all of us
tyvm!
Very useful information, thanks!
Thanks for this awesome video. How long will "sucker" last in the fridge? What about tincture, how long will it last in the shelf? Thank you.
thanks mate, appreciate it
Good one, I bought some for my puppy.
hello would plantain be good for serve eczema? thanks for the video. plus are the bigger leaves still healthy to eat dispite the taste?
1:08 "If you've ever been a kid" Chances are i bet we all have, probably at the start of our lives.
I have the great plantain and there are ones similar to what you're showing us except the leaves, I don't see any leaves, but its around the garden bed which is overgrown anyways. The seeds and root of the greater plaintain are extremely bitter, is it suppose to be bitter? The roots are also mushroomy in flavor for some reason.
If you dry it, or make a salve from it, is there an "expiration date" of sorts? Nothing etched in stone, just trying to determine if I should re-make it every year or does it have a somewhat extended shelf life?!
I have both the thin leaf and broad leaf type of plantain all over my yard. Can the broad leaf kind be used in the same way?
@MZMStudios Always good to learn something new Patrick :o) Before last weekend, I had no idea what a cracked rib felt like, now I'm practically an expert LOL! - OK maybe learning new things is not always a good thing :o)
this is my first time seeing your work. i subbed about two minutes in.
I've never taken advice from a man on a swing, first time for everything! SUBBED! Trying to "get back to nature" -FAME!
@bigbillbob88 Nice one! always good to hear a success story.

@Bliced Thanks :o) will do my best.
I bought some seeds but was given the instruction to stratify them before planting. Can you help me understand how that's done please. Thanks
Great video, thank you!! I wish I lived close by cuz I'd ask you if you would teach me all that you know. Have a Great Everything!! :)
