Plaintain has been one of my favorite herbs. It is not native to the US but came here from Europe. Glad it did. A Cherokee lady told me they used it to heal sprains as well.

I am so excited to have found your videos . The above plant was one of my favorite nibbles when I was a little kid with an obsession with Wise-women/witches which I one day hoped to become myself . Full circle and now entering crone-age, so cool to be able to find this information on the internet ...yeah ! Now just need that little cabin in the woods and hope the villagers aren't into dunking their local witches .

@FenderGibsonWashburn Happy to help Paul ;o) Yes not all weeds are as useless as we sometimes make them out to be. Always good to find something if value you didn't know you had - Like finding a tenner in the pocket of some trousers you haven't worn for a few months :o)

Weeds are not useless at all, in fact they are the bandaids of the earth. You will notice that wherever the grass covering of the earth has been removed, and the earth layed bare there grows the weeds. If you allow the weeds to grow thru the season, and leave them alone for a year, you will find that the grass has grown back under them, and reestablished itself. The weeds can go, and there you go, you got new lawn. You see, the weeds provide cover and healing to the earth, therefore, they also have medicinal value for us. Did God not say to eat every herb bearing seed in itself, and every fruit, bearing seed in itself, to you they shall be for food. Weeds are valuable. Thank God for them.

Thanks for the information. I had never heard of plantain before.I use a lot of mullein and comfrey, after watching some videos about this plant I started looking around the yard! The landlord didn't put down any weed killer this yr, so I found all kinds of small plants growing at the edge of the lawn. I dug them out and put them in my herb garden, hopefully they will take root and I will have some for next summer!

I just recenly started cooking them with stinging nettles into a fabulous green soup that is just as good either hot or cold. Thanks for the great advise anyway ! Seb from France ;o)

@Epiphanized I hear you. I personally find myself gravitating more towards "Nature knows best". I appreciate to some, that makes me sound like a total Philistine, but I feel there is a certain, tragic arrogance in man's haste to claim we know better than nature. I figured out a long time ago that Modern medicine is all about wealth, not health, but that's a whole other debate :o) The spirit of this video is all about being self sufficient and being independent of big pharma.

I found out about the stinging nettle thing quite by accident. I accidentally grabbed a handful after forgetting to put on my gloves, then started grabbing bunches of leaves from every plant I could see and grinding them to paste on tree bark and using that on my hand. The plantain was the first thing that worked.

im very careful. been eating it over 15 years now. first plants in and around your area you should learn is all the poisonous plants. to touch, to eat, ect. after that then learn plants as food/ medicin/ cordage/ firemaking/ shelter/ stains/ectect.to do so otherwise is just a mistake waiting to happen. because some plants such as water hemlock can kill you buy eating it, letting it get into your bloodstream through a cut, the smoke from it if burned, ect.

Like it ! Like it! I chew the seeds while on walkabout as some reckon it helps prevents little critters havin' a chew on one ( unsure it works, but they taste nice!) but I wasn't aware of it's antiseptic properties! Personally I think nettle stings are healthy but they can really upset kids so your advice is 'sage', I mean plantain! Extremely useful and highly enjoyable video's! I really like your close in, informal, friendly 'swingin' style Rick, all the best and have a great day too, Apache

I have the great plantain and there are ones similar to what you're showing us except the leaves, I don't see any leaves, but its around the garden bed which is overgrown anyways. The seeds and root of the greater plaintain are extremely bitter, is it suppose to be bitter? The roots are also mushroomy in flavor for some reason.
