Otacon or Hal Emmerich is one of my favorite characters in the whole of the Metal Gear series. He acts as a great representations of each of the games themes and his growth throughout the series is fantastic.

@@NPC_GENERIC_ENEMY_INFANTRY Id use "essentially" because while you can accidentally make a statement/point more verbose then where you started in some use cases, it is still grammatically correct. The problem with "literally" is it being grammatically incorrect in using it as a stand in for the word "figuratively" which actually caused "literally" to gain a new definition by Marriam Webster. ("Literally" and its new definition - : in effect : VIRTUALLY -used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement or description that is not literally true or possible.) Which irks the crap out off me because that's what "figuratively" means not "literally" but is accepted as a variable definition due to rampant misuse of the word...

Everything about him is like a perfect antithesis for his father. Huey sought to make the next big superweapon that would get him remembered, stealing the research and credit of his fellow scientists to make up for his own failings, and ultimately he failed to do so regardless. Hal sought to make a defensive weapon that would serve as the perfect countermeasure against the threat of nuclear annihilation without much care for credit, and instead was duped into making the next big, perhaps even perfect superweapon, all almost solely based on his own genius. Huey was a weasel, always attempting to worm his way out of a problem he created, always willing to lie and throw blame on others instead of taking responsibility... and he's a vengeful, spiteful bastard, having torturously murdered his own wife with his own hands after she rescued their _own son_ from being used as a test subject in the trial runs of his creations. Hal, by comparison, would be the first to admit an error and strive with every fiber of his being to correct it, not to mention being an exceedingly forgiving soul who wishes ill on nobody, even those who have wronged him immensely. Huey didn't care about the potentially unparalleled devastation his weaponry would cause, or who he was servicing such devices to; only that he would be credited for their creations in the history books. Hal is currently one of the greatest living champions of The Boss' ideals for pursuing a lasting world peace through peaceful methods. Huey is a virgin. Hal is a CHAD.

And became a genius engineer/programmer graduated from MIT, build several technologies and helped his best friend save the world multiples times, he's a hero in his way, a uber nerd/otaku way, not by doing CQC and shooting guns, just by helping people with his intelligence

When i first came across Otacon i must've been around 10 years old. The first impressions he left on me weren't the best, what with him peeing himself at the sight of Gray Fox and actively *not helping* during the Sniper Wolf fight. But he pulls through, and proves himself to be a really good friend and person before the first game is even finished. By the time MGS2 came out i had rerun the tanker missions countless times. Just Snake and Otacon running around a boat taking stupid pictures and shooting the shit. Playing through Big Shell gave us an even more interesting view of Hal. In MGS1 and the tanker part he was *your* best friend. But in Big Shell he was your _buddy/acquaintence/mentor's_ best friend and you're just looking in MGS3 was lonely without him. The support crew was good but Otacon is your homie! Mgs4 was a _glorious_ return to the bromance of a lifetime. But the "supplementary" games.... Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain... I was so happy to see Huey when i didn't know any better, i thought Otacon's dad would be to Naked/Venom what Hal was to Dave, but *gaht daym if i wasn't wrong about that* The _only_ reason i didn't murk that little bitch of a Huey was because the time paradox would alive'n't Otacon and that would be too big a price to pay. Otacon is proof we're all gonna make it tho. As long as you got that one good friend, you can take on anything. So here's to Hal, one of gaming's biggest bros!

21:54 That shot of the FROG commando holding her comrade always gave me chills. Gods forbid it ever happens, but if I'm forced to take up arms at some point in my life I hope I don't break under the pressure. Hell, I think I'd rather snap and turn into an evil, violent murdered than straight-up break.

Hueh kinda had it rough when it came to women. Strangelove was more concerned about passing on her own genes and needed a sperm donor she could trust. She did love her son because he was her son. Then Hueh leaves her in the pod. Later, after he is exiled from Dimond Dogs, he finds his son, and finds new love. But that new love turns out to be far more interested in Hal than in him. Once more scorned, but opting to instead make her suffer for her choice, he went after the child daughter. Ironic, man had a whole ocean to drown himself in at any point, and instead he chose a swimming pool.

Otacon the best friend anyone could ask for like Kaz Huey, the slimy person who joins the group somehow and you wanna punch every time he speaks. Something about Hal and David introducing themselves at the end really solidifies their relationship and how their fathers both knew each other but ended things on a sour note unlike their sons.

Excellent video. Otacon is definitely a top tier Metal Gear character, and you showed us exactly why. Thank you. I’ve been watching your Metal Gear related videos to learn more about the franchise that I unfortunately have been mostly a spectator to. The depth of the story Kojima weaved is impressive to say the least. There were a few specific characters I was hoping to learn more about. If there was a video in the future about any of the following: (Revolver Ocelot, Raiden, Sen. Steven Armstrong, Venom Snake), then I and hopefully others would be grateful.

While I get a lot of people not liking the story of V, the little detail of otacon having almost the same upbringing as Sunny (born and raised in a military base of a shady paramilitary/shadow government organization) is a really sweet moment, and is another piece of contrast showing how much of a better person Hal is compared to his father Honestly I never know if its intentional or just shizo fan rambling but the way the story of all the games connect to the tiniest detail really helps make this crazy acid trip of a world feel real

I hope you next do a video on Revolver Ocelot. Because of MGS4 & 5, there are two aspects about his character that have very mixed feelings about: 1) Ocelot's brotherly admiration/hero worship of Big Boss. 2) The relevancy/irrelevancy of being the son of The Boss. The latter is a strange open secret that is never directly stated/acknowledged in universe and I can't reconcile if it's meant to be important to Ocelot's role throughout the MGS history... if that makes any sense.
