Thanks so much, keeps our cows happy! Easy to install, very inexpensive, and almost no maintenance (about 10 minutes every winter, we have heavy iron in our water).

thats brilliant, I'm all up hill with 2 horses so I just use hose 100 ft and 100 ft cord for my tank heater , once I left hose in and walked down the hill to shut hose off and half my tank drained out...of course I pull hose out now before I walk down to turn spickett off I've had a young mare thats been pulling the heater out but I finally resolved that. your cows are super cute.

@@Tenonizer thats cute! 2 days ago after I scrubbed my tank cuz it was a warm 30 f degrees out I put my heater back in, yesterday I arrive my mare hanging out at the trough( being naughty as usual) steam is rising off the tank it holds 150 gallons mind you... its hot as bath water!!! OMG so I ran to supply store and bought a new one, they are supposed to turn off not run all night. needless to say my horses love hot water to drink in the winter but that stock heater was 4 years old so I threw it out it was probably gna short out since its thermostat stopped working

@@Tenonizer she's so bad ( not really, just smart and bored, they have lots of hay and minerals and salt and water ), I had to buy my 3rd tank heater yesterday cuz she chewed the cord so NO! and I can't wait till the ground thaws so I can put her back to work. winter is so hard with no indoor arena, it took me 2 hours to try and protect and button up my tank and heater so she hopefully will leave the heater alone. I'm so mad at her . but she's so bored, she's smart and needs so much more than I can give her right now not sure what I can do. I spend 1 to 3 hours a day with them as its a boarding place not my own. Do you raise the cows for meat or milk? and what's your weather like in Minnesota now ?

Ha, horses are just big puppy dogs in disguise, maybe some other floaty toys in the stock tank might help, they do get lonely. 😔 As for our cows, bulls are for burgers, cows are for calves, but their primary chore is turning the property into a farm style "manicured estate". Even though we are on the good side of winter, tomorrow will still hit -22 below... if we only had a hot tub here it might not be so bad...

Can you be more specific about which heat tape product you use? I'm in MN.

The outfit I bought it from seems to have been killed by covid, but the product I think was "Easy Heat". "Supplyhouse.com" is a good source, get their highest grade and make sure the type you buy has a tiny (small diameter) cap on the end to fit through the stock tank drain.

@@Tenonizer I ended up finding a heat tape from Radiant Solutions Company. I mimicked your system, but with a couple 275 IBC totes in my shop (have to haul water to them and fill em with my fire skid). Float valve on a covered stock tank inside, and a pipe to another stock tank outside. Outside tank is in a plywood box insulated on sides and bottom with 2" extruded. I put a lid on it and cut holes for the goats so they don't poop in it as often. The outside tank is snug against the wall, which helps since I could not fit the heat tape through the 1" pipe (the barb fittings were too small)". alas I cut off the male 120v plug and ran it through and rewired it and have it plugged in on the inside. -15 degrees these last couple days. Never froze. What I like best is the 6 watts per foot rating. So my 12foot tape draws 72 watts/hr. That's $0.01 / hour or $7/month. Conventional 1500watt water tank heater would cost $0.20/hr or $125/month. Awesome idea, thanks for sharing. This has eliminated a TON of work and waste for watering 450 goats in the winter.

I'm sorry but your idea won't work where I am...you definitely don't get the temp we do in central Canada

What makes it work is a heat tape that goes through the water supply pipe and a stock tank heater in the stock tank. The water supply pipe is not under any pressure but needs to flow smoothly level or downhill to the stock tank or trapped air will impede its flow. The water level inside the heated building will be the same as in the stock tank outside in sub-zero weather.
