I am 83 yrs old and live in NE Oklahoma, I never post comments on KZread but I enjoy your videos so much I decided to tell you .I have gardened back when if you didn't have a garden you didn't eat! During the great depression and WW2.But I had never planted Cow peas so I planted some purple pink eyed peas and man are they good!! Thanks for everything and I such enjoy watching your family!

An old feller told me, you take black eye peas or purple hull while in the pod and dried. Put them in a pillow sack. Wap it on concrete or hard ground few times. You can shell a whole pillow sack full in 15 seconds. The pea will separate from the shell. I didn’t grow any this year so you’ll have to tell me results.

When I was 15 years old we got through with our tobacco early I mowed the stalks down and harrowed the field then broadcast peas and watermelons picked peas until the freezer was full and picked the watermelons and put them in the tobacco barn we had melon until Christmas

I planted okree for the same reason. I'm a northern guy. I didn't have any corn meal, so I used a box of Jiffy mix... First after slicing them, I gave them a bath in buttermilk and egg...then rolled them in the cornbread mix and then fried them up. Oh, man! they were great. I also bought some crowder peas, but never planted them...maybe next year.

We have tried okree cut about 1/3 inch tossed in olive oil, seasoned with garlic salt, baked at 400* F till crispy, about 20 minutes. Tastes great.

Oh boy did ya'll make me belly laugh this video... I still chuckle thinking about Ms. Brooklyn saying you've been saving that word up in your word bank. 10/10 🤣🤣🤣

I LOOOOOVE brown crowder peas. Probably because I like fresh green boiled peanuts so much. We used to grow lots of crowders up at our farm in Tifton. You'll probably need to throw some shade cloth over your chicken tractor in summer so they don't overheat and die.

Pinkeyes are probably our favorite too! Great memories that you have with your grandma.

You need 12" of roosting bar per adult standard breed chicken. Also, STRONGLY recommend you use only the hardware cloth. Snakes, rats, weasels, can get through the chicken wire, but not the hardware cloth.

@@LazyDogFarm We used it in our new coop building an bought about 10 rolls and had a couple rolls left over. We used the extras for all kinds of things, most recently to fence our fall garden to keep out rabbits. They ate all our bush beans.

Now you can grow some coffee and use your popper to roast them. Or get another to keep from mixing flavors and scents.

The popcorn likely looks and tastes like it does because of the variety. I’ve gotten some varieties at our Farmer’s Market that looked and tasted similar to what you are describing. The Pennsylvania Butter that I grew last year had almost no hull, was circular in shape, and had great flavor. It looked nothing like what most of us are used to seeing as popcorn, but it was good. Keep up the great work and keep these videos coming. I truly get excited when I see there is a new Lazy Dog Farm video!!

I don’t know if you mentioned it but try to incorporate a couple eye bolts above where your feeder will go and hang your feeder and waterer on them with chain. Just have them like an inch or 2 off the ground. It keeps a lot of chicken poop and mud and such out of it and you don’t have to pick them up when you roll your coop. Also I wonder if you put some corn in a dehydrator for different times and tried popping it it might give you an idea if what’s to come.

If you've got a grain elevator/exchange near you, you should be able to take a sample of your popcorn in and have the moisture checked. I'd take about a coffee can/#10 can size sample.

@@LazyDogFarm Most all of your commercial farmers (corn and bean farmers) will have some sort of "moisture checker" too. Local Co-Op might have one too. Not as accurate as the more sophisticated equipment, but it gives them a good idea of where they stand on moisture content. Some are even handheld now, and don't require much corn at all to test.

I think the best test of if your popcorn has the right moisture is... How many kernels were left un-popped. If there was a lot, it probably was too dry. If they all popped, then you got it right! I think people call un-popped kernels "old maids".

We bought sexed pullets, so they're all hens. No guessing with that. We didn't want any roosters.

My purple hulls made and were done before my black-eyed peas even started.. The insect pressure didn’t ramp up until I got all of my purple hulls in.. the poor black-eyed peas took a BEATING and had a dry spell to contend with also..

We have to try and be pretty preventative with the big pressure on the field peas. It's not a matter of if we'll get pests, but a matter of when.

I'll have to disagree with you about muscadines only bearing fruit on second-year growth. Here in East Tennessee our vines produce every year and I trim them back vigorously every February. Just wanted to share this with you. We enjoy all your uploads so please keep up the good work.

If you add enough butter and salt onto just about anything you can get it up to at least edible. If it just won't pop no matter what, grind your corn up into grits and put your butter and salt on that. Chickens won't eat it if they have all those pea vines to peck at. You'll need to put that new sheller to work in any case. Are you comfortable that the Sevin will have degraded enough to not pose a hazard to the chicks? Pea curculio bug in case Brooklyn still thinks you just invented that to show off. Your videos make my day.

The Sevin label has listed post-spraying harvest periods and we're well past the safe range there based on what the label suggests. So I'm comfortable with putting them on there.

You can easily get tired of them if you have a good harvest. Sometimes it seems the shelling will never end.

Chickens look great, we used to use pine shavings for bedding but it always started stinking within hours and couldn't keep it clean. I started using garden soil. It keep the chickens clean and dry much longer and you can dump the soil back into your garden when you clean their container. The soil was such a good trick it even worked great for a bottle fed baby piglet we had in a dog crate in the house

I don't use it in the nesting boxes, I just used it in the brooder boxes to keep the chick's clean and the smell down 😀

I planted around 140 feet of the purple-hull July 3rd. Mine are starting to produce also. I was surprised at how fast they’re ready.

Hey y'all, I still love my pink eyed pea that I grew this year and my black eyed peas I grew them also. I got them all dried vacuum sealed in jars. I found that 1 cup of these peas and 1.5 cups broth in pressure cooker 10 minutes and they are cooked. My wife likes to put them in three bean salad with our green and wax beans we pick all summer long. Nice refreshing side dish in the refrigerator all summer long as beans are fresh.

You two are just what the doctor ordered; laughter is good medicine! My peas and beans are still growing and hopefully will reach maturity in the next couple of months; I staggered the plantings. Pink eyed purple hulls; Roma II; Zipper peas; and last, the notorious Ford Hooks. They are notorious because I've yet to have a successful planting. They grow, bloom, have wee little pods that fall off and pffff!!! nothing! So, I'm trying them as a Fall planting to see if it makes a difference. Will get some tropical winds/ rains from Ida but should be just enough away for the garden to survive it. Used a middle row buster to "trench" along the outside of the garden and one line within to drain off rain to avoid wash outs of the rows. Keep up the great work guys. May God bless.

Fordhooks are really good, but the timing can be a little tough on those. Hope you get it right this fall!

Travis, from experience may I recommend a latch at the top and bottom of your chicken tractor door. With the humidity our door sprang every way but loose!! Love the videos!! Blessings always, g.

My zipper cream looks like a kudzu patch. When done I'll mow it and either use it for mulch or till it in somehow. Definitely want to try butter pea I believe you said. Nothing better than boiled peanuts. Think it's two types of popped corn butterfly and mushroom. Butterfly for regular pop and mushroom(round) for kettle corn(caramel etc). Lots of good vids here on popcorn changed my life. Theater is my favorite.

Hey yall! Been loving the videos! I finally got my sorghum sudan grass seeds and the red ripper peas planted. I actually planted two rows of just the peas, just to see if I can and the rest I scattered in with the ss grass. I'm a speller too Travis, my husband reminds me that's why he married me.(he has dyslexia) everyone at my work comes to me to ask how to spell even though we all have computers and cell phones. I loved the popcorn video and your chicken tractor update. I've got to get my fall crops seeds started. I've got a muscadine vine that I need to restring and to fertilize them (they came out small , but a gazillion) Our trellised muscadines are finally ripe to pick. Love yall!

Travis I have sowed my onion seeds and they are up about 4 inches. Did I sow them to early, I'm in 8B just like you guys? I remember you planted out some in October and they did really well over winter. I'm thinking about planting mine out around the first or second week of October. I hope your back heals completely and you never have problems with it. BTW I like me some purple hull peas, corn bread and fried chicken, yum.

I've planted as early as mid to late October and been fine. Last year I staggered my plantings for all the different varieties I was growing and that worked well as the subsequent harvest was staggered as well.

If you put their food and water under where they are going to roost, wouldn't their poop go in their food and water? Love y'all. You make me laugh and I learn a lot.

I'm from Missouri too... a few years ago, I was traveling through Mississippi and bought some boiled peanuts being sold along the road...First time I'd ever had any. Can't say that I really cared for them that much...OK, but I'm not missing them. :)

Maybe a little bit of barn tin on that one end would have made it light? chic's definitely ready to get out🤣 One thing I have learned watching you videos is using cover crops to feed my soil. Any recommendations for after the fall garden is over? Love the videos keep them coming!!

I like clover in the winter -- the berseem type especially. I've also had good luck mixing things like vetch, winter peas, and daikon radishes.

Great content and very entertaining at the same time , nice catch on the “ pecker” 🤣🤣. But also never new that about the muscadine grapes I have had them for years on a Abner over a bridge on my pond. And have to trim it quite often to be able to get to the front door, guess I need to pay attention to how I’m doing it... Also I have pink eye peas coming up in a raised bed ,plant are looking good have been trying to keep them sprayed with need and copper although it rains every day.. But didn’t realize the liquid seven is a good option.the red rippers I grew had gotten stung up and full of aphids although I still harvested them. So I will have to give that 7 a try....

The organic stuff doesn't really work on the pea curculio -- trust me I've tried. So if that's a big issue, your best bet is to go to your local Lowe's and grab some Liquid Sevin.

That yellow popcorn is all ways crunchy, white popcorn tastes better.

Y'all! I don't comment much, but this video was fantastic. My kids love watching your boys. And the chemistry and jokes between yall 2 today was great. I laughed so hard, I almost woke up the baby. Back is feeling better. Gonna take a while to rebuild the muscles as they're quite atrophied from not being used for 8 weeks. But we'll get there.

I have a question for you Travis, I already cut my garden this year and have some buckwheat a few inches high right now but am planning on getting a winter cover crop cocktail on it in about 2 or 3 weeks and was thinking about Frosty Berseem Clover, Tillage Radish, and Kodiak Brown Mustard, would that cocktail work together? I was kinda afraid the Radishes might smother out the other, what do you think about the cocktail? I'm in zone 6b.

I'm not sure I'd mix anything with the frosty clover. That stuff gets really thick and will probably stifle anything else. With that being said, I've never tried mixing anything with it. But I know my plot with it last year was so thick. I have mixed radishes and mustard with very good success.

I prefer coconut oil on my popcorn instead of butter. I found 'LouAna 100% Pure Liquid Coconut Oil' to be easy to use but it isn't cheap.

Movie theaters used to use coconut oil when popping popcorn. I think it was really the best....then came the idea that coconut oil was bad for you and the movie theaters took it out. It was almost impossible then to find any in the stores... Now it's made a comeback and it available in grocery stores.

I sprayed when they were forming runners, but before flowering.

Travis where are you getting your seeds these days? I’ve had a difficult time finding purple hulls this year.

I got these from Urban Farmer seeds back in the spring to early summer. I had a hard time finding some too.

@@LazyDogFarm thanks for the info. I get my garlic from them. I’ve successfully grown hard neck varieties even though I’m zone 8b. I put them in the fridge when they come and plant in mid to late December. I’ll see if they have any. Southern Exposure Seed exchange is where I found speckled bush butter beans. .

Did you just plant or vine them up some panels?

We'll be moving this thing every few days around the garden plots. So it will sit right on the ground and there won't be anything to clean.

Will the Sevin spray hurt the chickens? Might want to rethink that

It should since it's been so long since it was sprayed. The residence time for it isn't that long.

Why are you putting the nests so high....its OK for them to be lower, and it will allow for easier egg collecting. Important is that the roosts are higher than the nest. The 2x2 construction is pretty weak....you have to remember you'll be dragging and pushing the coop over grass and maybe peas, as you said, it's gonna get bent out of shape soon. But, now that it's done, just make sure everything is reinforced well to prevent it from coming apart.

Once it is sitting on the ground, the nest will be right at chest height for me so I can easily reach in there and grab the eggs. We won't be dragging it. I'll put ropes on both ends and we'll just pick it up and move it over a few feet at a time as we rotate it around the garden plots.

If u use aluminum instead of plywood it would b a lot lighter

@@LazyDogFarm I tasted some that someone at a Bluegrass Festival had and I couldn't believe how bad they were. Maybe he didn't know how to make them right. I'm not a huge black-eyed pea fan either, so It be don't think by I am cow pea material.

I don't know if we'll ever do a live show. Our "lives" are so busy that I'm not sure we'd have time to do it consistently.

thats terrible about the muscadines im in central Georgia they grow wild everywhere here picked about 10 gallons this week getting ready to make wine out of them
