The Perfect "little bag" Pattern

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A perfect pattern should tick all the boxes. Is it easy? Does it come together quickly? Can it be used with quilting cotton? ...Vinyl? …Leather? Is it suitable for a gift? Is it of something that anyone could use? And last of all, does it look good? The Logi Pouch says yes to all.
Nicole Barber from OKSew has agreed to let us use her pattern in this week’s Tip Tuesday. Simply watch or join us while we sew up this intriguing little bag.
You can find the Logi Pouch Pattern attached to one of Nicole's video: • Logi Pouch (Lined) - W...

    Great video and tips. Love it. What size and length of zipper did you use?

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    I was using a #5 zipper. I think the regular size (100%) uses a 17" zipper and the larger (125%) uses a 22" zipper. As I said in the video, I usually always cut my zipper tape a little long. I dont want to have a zipper fray and not have enough wiggle room to trim it if I need to.

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    Ай бұрын

    Glad you enjoyed it. I used a 1" strip of the vinyl that I used for the exterior. Normally, if Im using a non-fraying material anywhere on the bag I will use it on the binding. Most times I will use a waterproof canvas as the lining and because it wont fray I cut a strip of it and bind the edges. If Im using a quilting cotton I will cut a strip of fabric and create a double folded bias tap (although it doesnt have to be cut on the bias) and use that to bind. I make my binding so that it is 1" that it will fold over with .5" on each side so its easy to sew on one side and you dont have to worry too much that you are catching it on the underside. I hope that helps. 🪡

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    Ай бұрын

    All I did was print out a second pattern and use a ruler to measure in from the cut line 3/8" all the way around, making dots to mark the distance as I go. You will have to be careful around the curves, making several marks as the distance changes as the curve progresses. I then connected the dots with a ruler and french curve ruler. If you dont have a french curve, you can free hand it. Cut away the 3/8" seam allowance and there you go!

    Question - could I add a D ring for a wristlet strap and where?

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    I have made several with a D ring and it works nicely. Once you have the zipper pulls on and the bag turned inside out to box the corners, insert your D ring so that the ring is inside the seam. Use a strong Microtex or denim needle and be careful. Of course, put the ring on the end where the zipper pulls close. If you have a big enough pull with a hole in it, you can create a wristlet with a lobster hook that will attach directly though the zipper pull. Good luck and let us know how it goes.👍

    What is the seam allowance you used? Thanks ❤

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    On the two boxed ends I used a 3/8" seam allowance. Around the zipper I used my zipper foot to get as close to the zipper teeth as I could. The reason I went as close to the teeth as I could is because I know that I will be trimming down the curve with pinking shears and I dont want to compromise the integrity of the stitch when I turn the bag out. I pull firmly on the zipper teeth to get my topstitch clean and I dont want to pull out the seam. As far as the boxed ends are concerned, adjusting the seam allowance more or less will not affect the pattern as long as they are consistent with each other. I hope that helps. Good luck. 😉

    What size paper did you use to make your pattern at custom 125? 8x10 doesn't work for me.

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    The original size is to be printed on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper. If you are opening this pattern up in Adobe Acrobat, when printing out at 125% make sure to tile it up using the poster option. That way it spreads it out and tiles it up without loosing part of the image. Generally, most printers will give you this option when you print out but it may not be called "poster" on the program you are viewing it in. If you can't get it to work for you, take the file to a FedEx Office or Office Depot (anywhere that does copies) and tell them you want it at 125%. I hope that gives you some tips to make it work for you.

    I am curious what tension u r using. I just got an hd 9 and find the tension setting remarkably low.

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    What size thread are you running through it? Because the HD9 is made for using standard weight threads (40-60wt) and thicker threads (Tex70 and up) the tension is going to vary differently than standard multi-stitch machines. The mid to upper tension settings (4-8) will be used for the thicker threads, while the standard threads will fall in the lower tension settings (1-4). On this bag, I was using a Tex70 thread and my tension was set to around 5. I hope that helps.🙂

  • @amandatrask9695

    @amandatrask9695

    That makes sense. I was having issues with the lighter thread weights bc 1 seemed so low. I had fewer issues with the 70 weight when sewing cork and vinyl.

  • @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    @sewingvacuumwarehouse

    3 ай бұрын

    @@amandatrask9695 If you feel like you have bottomed out with your upper thread tension and dont have enough wiggle room to fine tune with lighter threads, you can increase the bobbin case tension which in turn will cause you to need to increase the top thread. This will get you up off the bottom of your top thread tension. Be careful when increasing your bobbin case tension. You should make small increases when tightening the bobbin case screw (1/8 of a full rotation or less). You might consider in the future getting a second bobbin case that is tensioned for lighter threads while keeping your original bobbin case for thicker threads.
