The PERFECT Light for Filmmakers! Aputure LS 60x Review

Ғылым және технология

When it comes to filmmaking, lighting is everything, and getting a powerful and versatile LED fixture is arguably one of the best and most important decisions you can make. But is there a light on the market that regardless of the type of filmmaker you are - from a run and gun videographer, to a director of photography, or gaffer/grip - that can accommodate any type of shooting situation, and offers a range of features useful to all filmmakers alike?
In this review, I'll talk about the Aputure Lightstorm LS 60x, why I own three of these fixtures currently, and why I think it's the perfect light for filmmakers of any variety and niche. I'll cover all of the specifications and features of the light, also discussing how it stacks up versus it's daylight temperature-only sibling, the LS 60d, and Aputure's lower-priced Amaran 60x and 60d varieties and how these all compare.
I'll also cover the range of different features you can control on the light using Aputure's Sidus Link app from your mobile phone, and provide an overview of the many situations I regularly use this light in. This includes, among others: weddings, small commercials, interviews and corporate work, as well as for online content creation like KZread. Last, I'll cover the price of the light and how it stacks up to Aputure's other similar offerings, and provide my final thoughts on the LS 60x.
Over the time I've used it, this light has not only met, but far exceeded my expectations as a filmmaker, and is a crucial investment that regardless of the gig I'm on, has become an essential accessory that I cannot live without.

    I have a 60x coming tomorrow-I will use it in a lantern and softbox, but my primary use will be focusing-a hair light is a must for interviews-being able to feather it off and barn door it-makes it a fresnel first, and multi-utility second.

    Congrats on the purchase! It's a great multi-purpose fixture for sure - the focusing ability really sets it apart from most of the other COB lights in its class.

    Small jobs you where you don't have space for a lot of gear the Amaran is a great option. You opened my eyes to the LS 60's, the build quality is in line with the larger LS models and it looks like something that will last. Wow 8:01 you sure do clean up nicely 🤣

    You gotta have "the look" (my standard gig outfit). 😀Yeah the Amaran's are definitely space savers - I could've easily used one for my studio/KZread - but I think the build quality differences with the LS's are worth it.

    hi and thank you for a very nice video review have a question is the 60x light output strong enough for the Aputure Light Dome II?

  • @andrewsaraceni

    @andrewsaraceni

    No problem! Yes, I've used it with a Light Dome II (e.g. 9:31 for the interview examples), and it's powerful enough for softboxes of that size, at least in certain situations.

    I want to install the Aputure LS60 in a studio. If I turn it on and off with a master switch, will the lights automatically turn on and have my last settings or do I have to manually press a button or something? Thanks!

    It should keep your previous/most recently used settings, and you could save them with a preset in Sidus Link as well.

    If the light isnweather resistant, do we have to bag up portable batteries?

  • @andrewsaraceni

    @andrewsaraceni

    5 ай бұрын

    It actually is mostly weather resistant (the lamp head and power connector), you might benefit from a light plastic cover over the battery area though.

    Not sure what you're asking, but there's a slot for where the battery could be mounted on one side of the yolk of the light.

    This light fell apart after a few uses. Ive owned three of their lights and two of them have had issues after only using them a bit. My Godox lights have been better in terms of reliability so I'll bit be buying this light again because their quality just isn't there for me.

    Just curious, what were the issues you had and how did they fall apart? These have been probably the most robust fixtures I've purchased from Aputure, and I've been using them pretty heavily.

  • @PlayedWith

    @PlayedWith

    @andrewsaraceni With one, one of the cables just stopped working and had to spend 100 to replace it. My 60x adjustment screw just randomly fell out after maybe ten uses and it still looks brand new because I treat my gear with care. The screw will not go back in and now I can't use it, even though the light works great. I've had Godox lights for far longer with no issues. The build quality may not be as good, but they seem to last longer as they still work 100% after a couple years of use. I will likely never buy another Aputure COB light again.

    @@PlayedWith If it's still under warranty, I'd be curious if/what Aputure support could do to look at the unit and/or assist with some of that (e.g. send a new adjustment screw). Especially if it's the same light with all the issues, you might have had a bad unit/batch.
