Put two brass rods in a vice, set two chambers of the cylinder onto the rods, cylinder will not turn.

Blackie, I sure do enjoy this series on percussion revolvers. I've owned 8 or 9 of them over the last 50 years, but never long enough to shoot any of them before someone offers me 3 or 4 times what I have into it. That's not my comment though. I've done a lot of work on coal burning boilers, big one's that the fire box is 11 stories high, and the boiler front 90's get orange hot when she's running at normal speed. I've also done a lot of work and rebuilt a lot of valves on tug boats. there's only one thing that lets me take threaded parts out, without breaking and galling things. That is copper coat anti-seize. Clean the part sanitary clean, no rust or salt or ash left on the nipple. Use a flux brush, and put a very little bit on the MALE threads only! Make sure the female threads are sanitary clean, and put the nipple back in. I get this stuff at my local auto parts store. Remember, Copper Coat Anti-Seize, Not the stuff with aluminum powder in it. No matter what anyone says, the aluminum stuff is no good in a corrosive environment, and burning black powder gets a little corrosive! I recently became the owner of a Lyman, 1851 Navy .36, and I think I'll keep this one an have a little fun with it. You keep you powder dry, and keep up the good work.

Thanks to you Blackie on the 5mm mod and an impact driver I was able to remove all my rusty frozen solid nipples out of my 1860 colt army original. The impact driver was key to the removal. It’s the kind you hit with a hammer not an air impact just so we’re straight lol

Blackie I always enjoy your videos. Here's a little tip or trick I've learned from watching others. If you want to hold something small up to the camera and have it focus a little quicker try holding your hand out flat as a backdrop to the small item you're trying to show this is some thing I've seen others do when showing small toys or other small things to the camera. I hope it helps thank you for your videos.

GREAT TIP! I just broke my nipple wrench removing the nipples out of my 1970's Navy Arms 1858. I was able to grind the wrench and get it to work again but eventually it was beyond fixing. I will do just what you showed me in your video now and make a much stronger nipple wrench. PS I coated the threads on the nipples with Bore Butter hoping they will come out easier in the future. I used to just use oil.

I have been shooting black powder for 40 years and i havent seen anyone explain things better. I too have stumbled onto the socket solution. I enjoy fixing up old guns and making them shootable again. The first thing i do is remove the old nipples. Sometimes they come out easy, sometimes they dont. Oftentimes they are an odd size. I mike across the flats of the nipple then use the outsize jaws to find a socket that fits closely, then i cut away everything but the two opposing flats to make a custom wrench that i cam really put some pressure on. Great minds do think alike. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. John Davis

Just tried this, it took 15 minutes using dremal and 5mm, works great! I got 4 of the 6 nipples using a brand new nipple tool from tradition before it rounded. I was about to order a new tool when I watched this video. THANK YOU! the modified 5mm was able to get the last 2 nipples out much easier than using trying using the Tradition's tool. I would have never guess.

I own several percussion revolvers by Uberti, Pietta, and Euroarms. Several of them came with the nipples over torqued. Removing them was a lot easier after I pulled the cylinder then put a couple drops of penetrating oil in the bottom of each chamber and let it soak in overnight. Rem-Oil and Kroil both worked to let me remove the nipples without too much cussing.

Any paste/grease that is used on engine exhausts bolts to prevent them seizing solid is suitable as its made for high temperatures. Great videos, keep going as they are very well done. Blackie that is good information. I have found instead of a 5mm a 3/16 socket works good with the same slot cut across it also instead of holding it in a vise I made a fixture with a dowel the size of the arbor hole and another the size of the chamber set into a block of wood I can then slide the cylinder onto that and clamp the block into the vise. No chance of damage to the cylinder that way. For really tough nipples I use a 3/16 nut driver with a 1/4 drive shank and a 1/4" impact driver you can get on eBay or Amazon for 15 bucks That will back out the toughest nipple and as a bonus you can use screwdriver bits to back out stuck screws . Just have to use taps not raps . Heavy handed in not necessary. No buggered screw heads.

I can't speak to every model, but I have one from Traditions that I lightly surface sanded to expose the bare metal, heated it with a propane torch just glowing then dunked in waste oil three times (50w, synth if you think that makes a difference,) cleaning it thoroughly between treatments. It "case hardens" the surface and it doesn't roll off stuck nipples anymore. After treatment it will pick up a little bit of a patina, so smoke the surface with a Zippo or wooden matches and rub a very light coat of lard or bore butter on it to stop that and protect it from growing rust, although I suppose clear nail polish might work too. Just another suggestion.

looks like Taylorsfirearms is specifing different nipples threads 12-28 UNF For Uberti Revolvers (Item Number 1025A) 6X.75mm For Pietta Revolvers (Item Number 1025) I wonder if the FLATS for sockets are always IDENTICAL (5mm) they also sell High Carbon Steel Universal Nipple Wrench With Screwdriver This universal nipple wrench features a screw driver tip, *0.196" slot, 0.236" slot, and 0.275"* (= 5mm , 6mm , 7mm )slot. It works well for most black powder revolvers. Due to its heavy duty weight and larger size this wrench allows more torque ability when removing stubborn nipples.

i made one out of a deepwell 5mm too but it has a little play. i measured the flats on my nipple and it was 4.5 mm. i made another one out of a short 4.5 mm 1/4 drive 6 point socket and it fits perfect. i think the 4.5mm size is a oddball size that is skipped in most of the socket sets. if you can get a 4.5mm short or deepwell you will get a much tighter fit. the 5mm takes out and installs just fine so far.

Shoot yeah that'll work. I had modified a Nut driver. That is fine for nipples that ain't being stubborn. So this will be my next thing I build. I was toying with the Idea of Finding the proper size bolt a spent 45 colt brass cut into tubes. Will just slide over Then drilling the exact chamber pattern. Running the bolts through each hole and running nuts down to tighten the bolts to the base With road washers then fitted over covering the nuts. . So all six chambers hold the cylinder. Letting you torque on individual nipples. I don't thing he needs do all six chambers. Maybe four. This could of course be built onto the cylinder loading device many have just. Between the pivot base and the center pin for lining up the loading ram. It never be in the way nor would the lever n the up position be in the cylinder clamps way. The 45 colt brass tubes. Will help fill the chamber and not mar the inner surface of them. I know it sounds like alt of work. It really isn't especially if you only make four studs. There's no way the cylinder will twist nor can it get scratched up. Idk. I'm gonna give it a try on this quarter inch plate of got. Thanks again for the great idea. That beats the heck outa the nipple wrench.

secure the cylinder in a padded vise so it will not slip. Put your tool (pretty neat) on an impact driver then Iet everything down tight and give the impact driver a good lick with a hammer. Prior to this soak the cylinder in penetrating oil for about a week. If that does not move the nipple shame on you for not using a aniti-size compound on the threads, go to VTI and buy another one and a set of nipples.
