The Peppermint Nightmare - Liquid Lightshow
Фильм және анимация
Our first tests at making a liquid lightshow. The oil and kaleidoscope visuals are entirely of our own making. We pre-recorded it with a D90, then projected it via a notebook.

i watch this every day before i go to bed
I owned a lightshow in the 60s & 70s and performed with rock bands - Sense Lab Light Show We always wore real lab coats when doing shows I used Nicholson's Peerless Transparent Watercolors and graduated sizes of industrial clock faces on wooden platforms with beveled edges waxed to help spin the dishes, mineral oil base projected over backgrounds made up of slides and films. Thinking about gathering up the gear and doing one for a reunion with some of the musicians I worked with back then
@CowardsBendTheKnee Hey thanks for the comments guys. We're going to look at making some more visuals if we can, and if we're super nice we'll make a how to video (one day). We had to work most of this out ourselves as there seems to be little to no info out there.
Do it! It would be great to see more of this stuff out there! We're making a basic 'how to' video so people can start their own visuals. We won't give away too much, just enough to get started. Learning how to do this is half the fun!
Thank you so much for the compliment! We love doing this when we can, and seeing some of the old videos is what challenged us to go further with what we could. Would have been amazing to have seen the work you guys did back then. Is there anything still happening around the SF area? I'll have to hunt out some materials when I visit again next year.
Groovey babee. Music jams great too!
Awesome!
so awesome still
beautiful! good work
we use candle dye. you can find it in liquid form from most candle supply shops.
cheers andy
That's beautiful! Fantastic job! I used to do liquids in San Francisco in the 80's and 90's with a few of the 60's masters and (my liquids) even ended up the Rock&Roll hall of fame for about 8 months as part of a performance by The Brotherhood of Light (channeling the departed Brother Ed). We (the SF crowd) relied on Doc Ph. Martin's "Radiant Concentrated Watercolors" I LOVE seeing new techniques. If I still performed and you were in town you could be a guest artist any time. :)
I like this band
Sounds like a pretty cool idea. Check out Drippy Eye Projections to get a real sense of how it looks. Oil, dyes, concave clock face and a projector and you're pretty much set to go!
That's a good light show. I'm in the process of acquiring the needed parts to start putting together a visual element for my friends' band. Perhaps a small community on the Tube is in order?
Martin and I shot some footage today to make a basic 'how to' video. Hopefully we'll have it ready soon. We also have a new vid up using some mixes we've been experimenting with. Check it out via the channel. Cheers!!
could you tell me which dyes you use to colour the oil and how you do it please? i am trying to do it without much success...
I'd love to do this for an installation piece at my university. I'd love any tips/tricks/examples if I could get some. I would need to prepare a list of everything I need so I can set up the projector and the plates correctly and appropriately. I would set this as a background to an image I would wheatpaste onto a wall in the installation room. I would probably have to add music as well. If anyone could help me out; I'd be entirely grateful.
aw yeah
your work is gorgeous! my band is working on a video using a green screen, and in some of the shots we would like to feature some old school visuals like this, could we use some of this footage? we would give you credit or links to whatever you would like promoted. i really dig this.
The Peppermint Nightmare have changed their name to 'Black Springs'
Hi all, a close friend's 50th birthday is coming up this year and he wants a big music gig including his own band. I am wondering if it is possible to find downloads of light shows to use at the venue. Has anyone considered this possible marketing opportunity?
Could you tell me how can i dye oils? which pigments do you use?
we have an early 70's inspired band in north london and it would be great if we could get such a light show as a backdrop theblow.co.uk
