The PCWA/ Gettysburg Acts of Valor 160th Anniversary Reenactment
I've been very excited to share this video. This was my first large scale reenactment and we had a blast. The organizer and team really put together a one of a kind show. I had some fun conversations with guys from all over the country there to be a part of something special.
I didn't have much of a plan for filming. My first spots were really loud and I wanted to make sure I captured the battle sounds as they were. The event started off sunny and quickly went to rain, with dense smoke blanketing the area. That mad for some challenging filming conditions. I gave the camera to my wife, and I launched the drone. I had called GB Regional Airport earlier in the week for permission to fly. The rain was so hard, I couldn't see my screen nor much of what I was filming. I did my best to center things and stay away from people in case the drone malfunctioned due to the rain. I kept the lens angled down to hopefully avoid rain drops.
Hope you enjoy!

I’m glad to see folks are still going out there to do this. It’s a far cry from 1998 when we had more than 12,000 guys lined up for Pickett’s Charge. There were 25,000 reenactors there over that weekend.

In all of my reenactment years the 1998 Pickett's Charge is probably the one that I remember most vividly. That was actually the last mega event that I did. I was in the actual Army and things got out of hand a couple of years later. I'm retired now and still do some living history presentations at small local events but I will never forget the 135th of Gettysburg.

i think they could do a movie about shiloh but there is so much detail and drama to cover: the initial pre-dawn contact, sherman refuses to believe it's an actual attack, grant hears the guns and steams down the river, the thousands cowering at the river's edge, hornet's nest, johnston's death, ruggle's battery line, the gunboats. i haven't even mentioned the SECOND day. then forrest's almost-lone charge at fallen timbers. They'd never be able to cover all that in a 3 hour movie.

Sadly with the reality of today's over politically sensitive environment. Studios wouldn't touch a Civil War movie with a ten foot pole. Sadly movies like Gettysburg are likely a thing of the past. Especially movies that shows the South's perspective as well.
Man, Civil War reenacting as taken a hit during these times. I remember back in the 2000's when i did reenacting, we would have thousands upon thousands for big battles. Still looks great

As an Englishman ex member of the American Civil War Society (uk) 69th New York Irish Brigade I am deeply moved to see this wonderful film. We did a Gettysburg reenactment in 2002 in England with 2000 soldiers. Not the same scale but it was an honour to take part. Bless you all from your comrades in arms in the UK. I have distant cousins who were on the North and South in the war.
Oh my gosh thank you for the footage it was awesome.-72nd PA Zouave-Corpral

God Bless America. North and South. Props to the boys in blue. Their volleys were crisp. They fought hard as we did. Respect. See y’all in 5 years. Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise.
Those volleys looked epic!
I was there as a Confederate. I survived Pickett's Charge, but by the end of the weekend I was really whupped! Thanks to the organizers, reenactors and public for making it worthwhile. Big thanks for filming and posting, too, very interesting to see the bird's eye view!

It makes me so happy to see that people are still taking time out of their lives to commemorate these great historical moments in our history. I hope President Lincoln is in heaven watching with a deep sense of gratitude for the participants of this great event.
Thanks for posting. I was stuck in traffic and could see some of it from the road. It looked amazing. The cannon percussion shook my truck.
I attended this weekend event...my very 1st Reenactment ever & it was probably 1 of the coolest things I witnessed. However, a few things baffled me & I guess unless I actually lived this experience 4 real those things will probably baffle me 4ever. It was a very great experience overall!!!
Drove from California to be in this, I was so focused on loading and firing I couldn’t watch any of it. so cool to be able to see it, especially from the air!

Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it.
If you look at 1:25 you can see the company whose captain was shot as he got the order to fall back as the rebels were charging towards them. 99% of that company were killed because rather than falling back they stayed put on the bloody angle until someone from a neighboring company saw and either ordered them to fallback or they simply retreated because they had lost so many.
I saw some Black men among the Confederate soldiers in the video. Glad to see nobody is bared from participating because of historical accuracy. Anyone who wants to reenact on any side should and I’m glad to see that here.
Well now I know I made the mistake of going to The Daniel Lady Farm reenactment. There were maybe 100 soldiers on each side. Just standing shooting at each other. I don’t think anyone died. (I was a bit far away) Truly disappointed. This was a thousand times better. I know it’s a dying hobby though. But maybe I’ll go next year (if there is one) because I live ten minutes away from this

The campaigner side of the hobby is well and growing. with plenty of events with 3-400 participants each year. 1st section is having an event soon where they put an entire csa artillery battalion, with all cannon, limbers, smiths ammo wagons and horses to pull it all into the field... and do live firing with the guns.
Having been out of reenacting for about 15 years now this is sad. I’ll never forget Gettysburg 145. We had close to 15,000 out there. You can tell the authenticity has gone down significantly, and it more theatrical than authentic. I hope to get back in someday and help turn things around, this is not what reenacting used to be.

I didn't see many flags on the Confederate side. Were they there or not flown because it could be "offensive" to some? I really hope they were there in and not the latter
@General_Dave_1

7th Tennessee, 10th Battalion guy here, We flew as many flags as we could but when you have to merge companies of soldiers in the reenactments the purpose of carrying the flag kinda loses its meaning. My Company only had 3 guys left for this battle cause most had to leave prior and we had to merge with another company, most of 10th Battalion was actually made of like 6 companies put together. You can see our Battalion at 0:41 seconds, with the Colonel wearing the blue pants and tan hat, im wearing blue pants with a grey jacket and black hat on the right. There was no offensive reason why we couldn’t fly our battle flags at all, we just didn’t have a reason to.
The patriots of the the civil war … those would be the guys in blue.
I wasn’t where they change the venue.

Re-enactments on the actual ground is pretty disrespectful to those that fought there. I re-enacted for a number of years and by far the least enjoyable part of any weekend were the battle re-enactments. I would go so far as saying the only re-enactment that was worthwhile was the 150th Antietam “Maryland, My Maryland” cornfield fight. And as good as that was the whole thing sputtered to an end when someone got injured in a firearm mishap. We all stood around wondering WTF was going on and were just sent back to camp to pack up and go home.
Was no charge all in one with hand to hand combat? Unless I missed it

No sure exactly what you mean, but there some some hand to hand around the wall. That is when the rain was really coming down and I couldn't monitor what I was filming or give my wife direction on where to film. It got quite confusing with all the smoke, noise and rain.
It’s really time to put Civil War reenacting in the rear view mirror.

We were just using black powder. That means we were firing blanks. No bullet, no anything in the barrel. Some people could die doing this stuff so we are actually instructed to fire higher than their heads because there is still a risk. Generally speaking we fall over dead when we want to, be it we run out of ammo, didn’t want to fire alot of rounds, or we had enough fun and want to fall over. You can coordinate falling over with an enemy shooting in your general direction and take a “hit.” Its pretty fun.

Wow. Ive reenacted for 30 years. My dad started after seeing the 125th and I stopped after 2012 because of the obvious historical in accuracies. I got sick of seeing 100 or more females cross dressing as union men. Nothing is more obvious then a female on horseback crossdressed with her appendages flopping around no matter how homely they are they couldnt fool a child... I miss reenacting and respect my compatriots that still do it but that is just plain ridiculous... my last straw was at gettysburg in the 2008 when i saw 80 women cavalry on horseback. My fiance was laughing her ass off... i wish i had the video.
Safe to say there were no “chubby” confederates at the real thing.....
it's still a show of battle or maybe a skirmish, oh god there are only 14 thousand less performers of this stolen battle, it's sad what is happening in the states, and the nation is watching and silent

yep, unlike the campaigner side of the hobby.
I don't understand why people keep lionizing this ill-concieved, murderous, failure of an attack. Both Pickett and Lee, especially Lee, should be condemned for the wretched tactics involved in the action. The attack is on the same level as the brutishly concieved attack on the Somme in WW1.
All those wasted lives , for what?
