The pattern they rarely teach you... The 3x3 Determinant and permutations.

#Determinant #Matrices
Rarely is the 3x3 determinant (or any determinant for that matter) explained in a way that warrants a discussion on the patterns with in determinant. In this video we explore important patterns that are rarely taught when learning about determinants.
Some useful definitions:
Permutation: a permutation is a specific arrangement of a set of 'things', be it numbers, letters or even the coffee mugs in your kitchen cupboard.
Transposition: a transposition is the act of swapping two of the 'things' within a permutation revealing another permutation.

My teacher showed us this first and he didn’t even write down the definition. Just showed us. He of course moved on to cofactors, but I found it really cool that he actually showed us how it is defined so that it made sense why things are the way they are.

It's great to hear that Samuel, he sounds like a great teacher. Understanding why things are the way they are is what I think makes learning it worthwhile.

A Clever Chimp thanks this was explained by my professor. Didnt understand it what permutations had to do with with determinants, but now I do.

You're welcome Anish. I'm so glad it's sparked those types of thoughts for you. So much of maths has come from humans noticing patterns in things, so it's always nice to remind yourself of that from time to time.
