The pathfinder schools canteen kit field review

Ойындар

I've been eyeing this kit for awhile now. I went ahead and dropped the cash to find out if it holds up to all the hype. The kit I bought came with all kinds of good stuff plus plenty of room to add your own stuff

When mine arrived, the molle straps would not stay snapped. I contacted Pathfinder just to let them know and I could still use it. They immediately sent a new bag an said to keep the "defective" one. So I now have a good spare storage bag. Great customer service Pathfinder has....

This is a wonderful kit and the quality can not be beat. The canteen is a wide mouth and that allows for easy cleaning, plus, you can see that it is clean which is very important. Having a cooking kit with water supply is brilliant. The bag allows for enough room to add a fire kit, spoons and gloves.

I bought the same kit and yes, it is a lot of money (I live in germany and had to pay extra for shipping and customs office). But I wanted to have that kit so much. I love it. It has got the best canteen cup I ever had. Maybe I will replace the shoulder strap, as you said, it is too short. Instead of water purification tablets I will put a Sawyer Mini water filter in the kit, because the filtered water tastes much better from a Sawyer. Atb, Christian

My best friend bought me this kit a few years ago and I love it. It resides on my battle belt (w/a harness) hiking set up and has never failed me. The place you're at in this video reminds me of a place I hike into on the No. Platte River in Western Nebraska with the geese and the wind!

Enjoyed watching your video and really appreciate the message about being responsible and safe with your fire. Also I completely agree with your point on needing a longer adjustable strap. Hopefully some of the folks that can make that happen are watching.

You mentioned the short length of the strap and I don't know if you have already addressed this problem but I often add the larger size key-chain rings, or small carabineer's, to the ends of the straps. That usually fixes my length problems. I'm 6'3". Sure is a nice system. Good quality items are always a bit more. This SS canteen system seems to be thee standard these days.

the pouch looks like a rothco pouch I own. And is made very well if it is a rothco. At first look I thought the clips on the shoulder straps could have been a bit better. but I've been using it for around 8 months with no problems. Solid pouch! Will be buying this canteen kit soon. good video!

I have some ice tea spoons with large bowls.. They are th perfect size for this use and weigh no more than th titanium.. For me they are perfect and cost nothing.. I get it that you guys can afford your toys and have fun using them.. However, some of us have a much smaller budget and must make do on less.. Second hand stores, flea markets and yard/garage sales can provide many use things.. Re-purposing found items is fun too and rewarding..

I agree 100% about one's right to spend their own $ how they so choose! What I have a problem with is the number of YT video bloggers who carry on like bushcrafting can't be done w'o a $150 axe or a $300+ waxed canvas backpack or a $100 tarp! I was quite relieved to hear your comment about the gatorade bottle/stanley cookpot alternative! Good video!

You don't need a big fire. Build a twig fire in the stove (standoff). The stove also works with heat tabs and alcohol stoves. The canteen, cup, and stove are perfect. They stow away compact and a US Military canteen pouch fits fine. I prefer the Helikon-Tex E&E pouch. The canteen fits better and there is still room for extras. As far as purifying the water, the neck for the canteen fits the MSR water purifiers. I carry both the canteen and a Nalgene plastic bottle. Boiling water is nice if you only need a quart, but if you need more a purifier is faster and better. Chemicals and filtering water through a rag works, but using a purifier has no taste.

I've been keeping an eye on this since it came out, finally pulled the trigger, got mine today. A couple of observations..the price has come down a bit since initial release. You can get the canteen cook set with the cheap 3 dollar cover (not the cover you have) for 59 bucks. That made a big difference for me since I already have a maxpedition canteen bag. I was willing to shell out cash for the cook set, but have no use for the extras included in the more expensive kit... already covered. Keep an eye on that hinge pin that connects the cup handle. Just unboxing mine and opening it up, hinge pin fell out. I put a slightly more aggressive bend in the pin and tapped it in with a steel punch, it should be set now. Second, and you ran into this issue too. The lid for the cup is very* tight and snaps in place. You definitely won't want to struggle with prying that sucker off with boiling contents in the cup, not a big deal to bend the lid out a bit. Glad I did that before initial use. I noticed the lid had a made in China sticker on it, not sure about the rest of the kit. Good video, just subscribed.

This is no endorsement of anything, but just to clarify, I believe the $20-something lid is the "heavy cover" which is, as the name indicates, quite heavy. It has strain-holes and a high polish belly which serves as a signal mirror. That's why it's so much $. I don't own this kit, but have been researching it and have wanted it for a while. I do own the grill stand that I use with my Trangia. Thanks for your review, my friend.

Get yourself an insulated lunch bag (nylon. foam insulated.velcro closure. 4 dollars. re-usable. about 2 ounces). Put your freeze-dried meal pouch in that before adding the boiling water. Let it re-hydrate for 20 to 30 minutes. It will taste MUCH better and will still be too hot to eat without burning your tongue. . . . even down to the last bite. Works even better when the ambient temperature is below freezing . . . .

(all I noticed) :D Also for cheap firestarter what I always did since scouts when someone showed me, is just save you drier lint, look for cheap candles on sale. mix on teh stove in an old pot, and then mold bricks or cut sticks etc. Wax plus lint is easy to make, and works well. Also any army/navy store has that style strap with metal clips for about 5 bucks. Probably been in use since Vietnam and will work for another 50 yrs.

Pathfinder store is now selling an ABS replacement cap for the bakelite one (6 bucks). If you accept advice from random strangers on the internet, mine is that you pick one up. The bakelite seems sturdy... until you drop your canteen full of water. My heart sunk when mine exploded from a ~2.5 foot drop to shag carpeted floor. I was really disappointed, but then really happy when I was able to get a replacement... and then really wary about relying on that canteen for anything more than an afternoon fishing... and then really happy again when I noticed the ABS replacement on pathfinder ;)

I would be curious if the bottle and lid remain water tight after boiling water in the bottle. I have the round Pathfinder bottle and after booling water in it and allowing it to cool down enough to handle without gloves, I found that the lid was leaking inside my haversack, not good. I am now using Klean Kanteen which has a better lid and holds 8 oz more water to boot.

You've had this for a few years now. Are you still happy with it ? If you could only buy one kit of Dave's Canteen Kit or the Bottle Kit, which one would you buy now? And would the weight difference between the two matter to you, for a long hike ? Thanks for the review. It was in depth and made sense. I agree about the plastic clips and the length of the strap.

I still LOVE this kit! If I'm camping it goes every single time but if I'm going on long hikes I tend to leave it behind due to weight or I just bring the canteen. If I had to choose today between the two I would still go with this set here man. Great canteen set. I just wish it came with a boiling lid. I had to purchase mine separately.

At 2:50 he said (on Nov 14, 2013) it was "dang near a hundred bucks". Take a look at Dave's page www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/campfire-survival-cooking-kit/ and you'll see it listed WITH the MOLLE Shoulder Bag for $79.99 as of Aug 2, 2016. But Dave's page for JUST the Canteen Cooking Set is listed for only $59.99 at www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/canteen-cooking-set/ and, ... then there's shipping cost. So, I hope that information clears up your confusion.

I wish you had used the stove as I think was intended. That would be setting the stove on the ground and then just building a stick fire inside it. I do see that it worked well, but building a smaller fire just inside the stove means less fire to put out.

First of all, I like your knife and saw combination. It's what I carry. Your insights about the kit are spot on in my view. The kit is expensive for what you get, but it is, by no means, a rip off. Most of Dave's stuff is relatively expensive; still everything that he offers seems to fit nicely within his philosophy, with a few exceptions. Personally, I usually cook, instead of opening a pouch and adding hot water. On the other hand, there are situations where pouch food is the ticket. Consider a situation where you are traveling on a motorcycle and stop at a highway rest stop. You probably won't have the option of starting a wood fire. What you really need is some sort of alcohol stove to heat your water. I think that would be a viable addition to the kit. You can build your wood fire when you arrive at your camping destination, assuming that fires are allowed. And that is not a given. Anyway, for me, the addition of military style mess kit would probably be the better overall solution.

the 1st time i watched this video was years ago now. since then i bought a bunch of SRO's gear... a whole bunch of it, too and i've used a lot of it a lot over a good time period... my take on the SRO's stuff... 1st-off it's a little bit over-priced and 2ndly: the canteen kit is alright. however, compared to a standard GI canteen with canteen cup and the price of both, the SRO gear is no big deal to me personally. #1 that canteen is welded-up in seams and for mine for me, i don't want to put it in the fire. plus, i have no need to put the whole canteen in the fire in the 1st place. as a kit though with the bag and all the SRO's canteen kit is ok. for me personally same goes for all of the rest of the SRO's gear i have.... it's all ok, but no big-deal type of thing one way or another. the size of the canteen and the big mouth on the canteen are pluses to me. all of this goes for the bottle kit too. the bush pot is ok and good, but wal-mart has similar in SS and it's only $10 and you get 2 pots with 1 lid. price-wise the WM pots are a better deal to me. i don't personally like the holes in the SRO's cup and i don't want to hang it over the fire, either but each to their own. i had one of those stanley SS cups with the lid... it has welded seams in it too and those seams broke loose on my stanley cup. so, i'm not big on welded together SS camp cooking stuff. make it one piece and thicker.... i would like that a lot better. slim chance a SS canteen or bottle made by anybody will be one piece though. i do have a SS water bottle i like though.. it's a Nalgene SS bottle, but for me i don't put it in the fire anyway, either. a regular old plastic GI canteen with a old SS cup works fine for me when it comes right down to it. that SS SRO's GI canteen cup lid i like too. in my experience for me you get too fancy and expensive it's not that much better and the stuff won't last as long, either. other than for water stuff or eggs i don't need cooking stuff anyway most of time and i camp a lot because it's easy for me.... i live in the country on a farm. thx4vid!

Awesome video bro. Great review. Looks like a great kit and with the quality and what it comes with its probably well worth the money. I wouldn't mind having one and maby one day I may get one but for now that $100.00 is a lot of money and there's alot more I want that will probably come first. Also if you ever need any fatwood just let me know. It's plentiful around here and I wouldn't mind sending you some. Thanks for sharing. Robert

I hike with single strap items all the time and they never bother me unless they are over loaded. This pack didn't bother me one little bit, but if it was a larger guy then they will hate the way it rides on them.
