The past, present and future of the bubonic plague - Sharon N. DeWitte
View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/the-past-pr...
The bubonic plague, which killed around 1/5 of the world’s population in the 14th century, is still around today -- but it now claims only a few thousand lives each year. How did that number shrink so drastically? Sharon N. DeWitte investigates the causes and effects of the black death and explains how knowing this information can help us prepare for any future outbreaks of the disease.
Lesson by Sharon N. DeWitte, animation by Steff Lee.

I love how the spread of a disease can differ through out history yet with our technology we still couldn't contain a outbreak in 2020 due to lack of communication, horrible government infrastructure, and just straight lack of fear.

Actually, the yersinia pestis is not the cause of COVID-19, therefore, scientists and doctors cannot really invent a cure so fast. The cause of COVID-19 is the coronavirus strain. The other strains of coronavirus (like SARS) disappeared and scientist could not find a cure for them...yet. These two strains of disease aren’t the same and therefore cannot be compared. (If COVID-19 was caused by yersinia pestis, we would be in WAY more trouble) Scientists and doctors CAN use the information from back then now though. Sorry if some of the information was inaccurate.

Hi Ted-Ed, could you make a video about Versailles? :)
Something I've always thought about is how we always talk about how we discovered this or that and imagine a world without said revolution, so would it be possible that a "parallel world" could have a revolution in something that we haven't learned and they are imagining a world like ours? What im saying is kind off like "Is there the possibility that there's still something like a new science that we might not know about?" for example people didn't know back then that they had a problem with their medicine and were unaware of anything so maybe that is happening right now, we are living without knowing something that would in the future be unimaginable to live without. Have a good day and thank you for reading this.

You dont have to travel far. In the americas they dont have these killer disease. Their genetic "revolution" happened when the european came. 90% or the natives that doesnt have accidental immunity dies
if the medieval plague spread from person to person, as oppose to the plague before and after, how is it NOT different from the ones that spread by flees? And it spread not only to europe but to all over the world. Were those places also troubled by the same socioeconomic effects as europe?

Hey! :) I know it’s a few years late, but please don’t feel your country was anywhere near responsible. The bubonic plague didn’t start in India! it merely wound up re-emerging there in the 1800’s. Sadly harming every single community it came into contact with. Earlier, (as said by by Ted-Ed) it passed through, ravaged, and radically altered every one of the human populations it came into contact with. This includes so many wonderful and beautifully unique humans; from Europe, India, and every other inhabited place afflicted. The overall numbers will never be conclusively known. [ Some estimates are vastly better than others however, keep that in mind if/when researching further. ] I wish you the best, healthiest, and most knowledgeable of times in future. (:
