The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 American epic biblical drama film produced, directed and co-written by Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, Maia Morgenstern as Mary, mother of Jesus, and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It depicts the Passion of Jesus largely according to the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also draws on pious accounts such as the Friday of Sorrows, along with other devotional writings, such as the reputed visions attributed to Anne Catherine Emmerich.
As per the title, the film primarily covers the final 12 hours before Jesus Christ's death, known as "the Passion". It begins with the Agony in the Garden of Olives (i.e., Gethsemane), continues with the betrayal of Judas Iscariot, the brutal Scourging at the Pillar, the suffering of Mary as prophesied by Simeon, the crucifixion and death of Jesus, and ends with a brief depiction of his resurrection. However, the film also depicts flashbacks to particular moments in Jesus' life, some of which are biblically based, such as The Last Supper and The Sermon on the Mount, and others that are artistic license, as when Mary comforts Jesus and when Jesus crafts a table. The film was mostly shot in Italy. The dialogue is entirely in Hebrew, Latin, and reconstructed Aramaic. Although Gibson was initially against it, the film is subtitled.
The film was controversial and received polarized reviews, with some critics calling the film a religious and holy experience, while others found it anti-semitic and criticized the violence as extreme. The film grossed over $612 million worldwide and became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2004 internationally at the end of its theatrical run. It is the highest-grossing (inflation unadjusted) Christian film and independent film of all time. It received three nominations at the 77th Academy Awards in 2005, for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Thousands of people where crucified & tortured way worse than Jesus. It wasn't portrayed correctly Mel Gibson went over the top with the beatings & the size of the cross. It would've been impossible to carry the cross after that beating & with the Romans still beating him on the journey. Gimme a break, total nonsense.

The Roman's I'd everything possible, they tortured him wanting him to attach, instead he showed love and peace. He took the torture so we wouldn't have to. Everything heavy cross lactcerations, whippings/beatings. It was Jesus spirit they wanted to crust, GOD only gave man his flesh, so Jesus felt our pain,etc.....all of mankind did did and allow this to happen.
We are being tested , but Jesus died for everyone and I sure look forward to the movie I pray everyone have an open mind with the love of Christ when seeing this movie 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

My mother was a very good Christian.Never wavered. True women of God. But when she saw The Passions of The Christ she was shocked at the brutality. She even asked me if it was that bad for Jesus. I said 'much worse'. I felt sorry for my mother because the church we all attended never really preached the truth how HIS life really was. I think the same goes for many good Christians.

The bible talks about what went on in that movie. So I don't understand why your mom didn't understand or thought it was easy on Jesus. I knew from the age of 5 years old.

Yes she knew and for you to say she didn't is just wrong. To read it, hear about it, or to SEE it in a movie are very different. If I tell you I snapped my leg playing football you would say OH. But if you saw it break and foot flopping and skin tearing and bleeding you would say WOW. Get it kind person?

I was making a point really, that it's in the Gospel, and has been preached and talked about through our lives. I'm a Catholic from birth. And even our crosses show how beaten and torched Jesus was. That's all I was trying to convey. And it surprised me to read your mom didn't realize how severely treated Jesus was. I was 5 years old when I came upon a mass card of a relative that had a photo on the front, of Jesus bloody, beaten, and on the cross, and it impressed me so much, that I had asked my mom, why did they do this to this man. That was my introduction to Christianity. It was no picnic when he suffered and died for those who accept him. I say it this way because so many mock, and laugh about him so much today . Again, I apologize, to you and your mom's memory, and will keep her in my Rosary tonight. God bless you! Tony Allotta.

@@tallotta1 How kind and thank you I accept your apology my friend in Christ. I will admit the church my mother went to did dumb things down so much. And even though we read the Bible we don't fully understand at times. The movie just caught my mother in her typical loving way towards Jesus and cried seeing how brutal it looked. I have always been the prayer giver in the family and she knows I know the Bible so she made that comment to me. I felt her pain in my heart when she asked. If I may I will relate another silly story to you. I also wanted my daughter to know Jesus early. She was about 5 also and I knew she could not fully understand the Bible yet so I bought her a nice Children's story book about the Bible and Jesus. So trying to be good dad I thought I better read it first to see if it was accurate. Reading it was fine till I came to the part about Jesus crucifixion. Now I had read the gospels many times but for some reason this child's book made me break down and cry on my knees for the first time. It showed me that at the height of his popularity his life was soon to end. I never put those two together yet. Now once again yes its in the Bible and I read it many times. But at that time and place the Lord touched my heart to give me more understanding. So you see understanding can come from any where anytime any place. And realized that child's book gave as much understanding as the churches today that give us this kindergarten mentality teaching. So I say thank you I also apologize to you kind one and May our Lord bless you and allow you to keep teaching and worshiping him.
Oh please, Gibson's 1st 'Passion of the Christ' was truly more revealing what Jesus Christ suffered. 'The Resurrection' will be as amazing , not doubt!
I think man is still the same today, instead of looking for a place to unify we judge and separate. Love is the answer, and Jesus showed us the way. He didn’t curse the Jewish leaders, He showed them God’s Love.
I used to think that Jesus and the Jewish religious establishment had irreconcilable differences until God showed me that Jesus was trying to show them what they should have already known; being raised with the Torah. God also showed me that the High Priest was the only one ordained to offer up the Sacrificial Lamb. The priest himself said it; "it is better that one man die than for the nation to perish." And Jesus Himself said; "no-one takes my life; I give it."

I literally was watching passion of the Christ last night after almost 13 years of last seeing it. I was thinking to myself, “well it obviously ends with a cliffhanger, I wonder what Gibson thinks about this” and lo and behold! I find out sequels are coming! Now I’m not Christian, I denounced my faith at 11 yrs old. But I will still admit that the Bible is the greatest story ever told. That being said, I’m very much excited to see where Gibson takes this. So much potential for crazy visuals and effects to interpret heaven and hell, angels, and the days and years following after the resurrection.

Mel cannot change the words of that book to appease anyone. We are forbidden to change a single word of the Bible much less rewrite it to make someone feel better. It is what it is- THE WORD OF GOD.
