The paradox as I see it is that if you try to subvert your ego by struggling against it, it only becomes stronger and wily-er. Whereas the true path to humility in art and life involves both reverence for the beauty of works of man and nature and respect for the ego in its proper role and context.

What Earl exhorts is to get out of the tutorial and copying obsession to discover what you’d be able to create from your own imagination and skill, it could lead to shitty work… or, it could lead to a next step discovery. I don’t feel insulted by this invitation, I feel curious and excited of my own potential as a creator. (The algorithm brought me here, and thanks to your critical video of Studio Practice now I’m subscribed to your channel. Keep the good conversations going 👏)

... tens, probably hundreds of thousands of talented and ambitious (in rhe bast sence) of people have been "inspired" by this idea in the last half century. Its a heady and attractive idea. It is also a trap , a dead end.

I have been wrestling with your problem of navigating the paradox all my life. You appear to solve it by tapping into your pure creativity - respect! I have solved it by deepening my understanding of "tradition". That understanding, I say, includes and overwhelms the paradox.

I got the impression that his video wasn't really about "art in general" but was more about his specific genre, that being post-modern design, or avant-garde design, something like that. So I think that the advice is probably useful in that school of thought. But if you were a photographer, and your job is to take school photos. Or if you were a carpenter in a rural town making custom kitchen cabinets for old ladies, then his advice would be less useful. I think his advice and your advice are both useful depending on the context, and depending on that the artist is trying to achieve. I mean, most successful online artists are just making commissions of anime characters on twitter, and for their aims, they would be best served by ignoring both of these schools of thought.

well, I've been in this business (art education) since the early 1970s) - including attending 4 art schools. So I can assure you that I understand exactly what he is intending and who and what it is for.

@@Paul-talk I'm an oil painter myself, and my work is much more akin to your paintings; I don't know anything about design or prints or his kind of art. I agree with you that sometimes (in present day art practice) there is an overemphasis on originality or unconventional self-expression. And some artists seem to get completely lost in the weeds, high on the smell of their own flatulence. There is a huge amount of skill and information to be learned by studying the masters, more than anyone could learn in a lifetime. But I can also sympathise with his view that it's worthwhile to explore unfamiliar territory. Especially if the artist's intention is merely to create something that is satisfying, and to explore and enjoy the process along the way. Or to communicate an idea that is difficult to convey with standard methodology.

@@Paul-talk I don't really understand his art. But regardless I'm sure that there's a fair amount of skill and technique involved in the process, and that he is also communicating some ideas through the work.

I appreciate your videos as a young struggling artist and I will purchase your book. For me the emphasis is on expression and uniqueness. After college I made the switch from classical art to abstract expressionism because I decided it would be more interesting to find myself, rather than just reiterate. However it has left me dumbfounded at times on how to go about it. I often find myself drawing classically and then fragmenting or drawing on top of it again and again. sometimes very rarely the results are favourable, often not. I feel this is a new artform that may take yet again, years to master. But then I see the farcical modern art that rises to the top (mostly via nepotism) and I feel hopeless. I see the greats as well Munch, Bacon, Baselitz and Guston etc.. that really hit on something and that gives me inspiration. It a confusing vicious cycle
