The Panjandrum Was An Irredeemable FAILURE of History... SO I BUILT ONE

Ойындар

Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am recreating another historical failure. This one is called the Great Panjandrum. It was not great. It was basically a bunch of fireworks strapped to a drum of explosives intended to roll across the battlefield and directly into the enemy fortifications. The only problem is it couldn't reliably roll straight or stay upright. And the fireworks would break off and shoot in all directions.

    5:55 this gave me an idea. What about making a challenge course with obstacles like spinning wheels (maybe not that fast) and the first person that crosses the water (falling into water means you have to start from the beginning or eventually checkpoint in the middle) wins? Each of you would make part of the track and at the end you would combine them. Or each of you could make his own track and you would have 3 rounds. With enough obstacles and good difficupty level it could be a cool multiplayer monday video.

    I mean, WW2 was the war where the USSR experimented with trying to strap explosives to dogs and train them to "attack" german tanks (yes they tried to make suicide dog bombers.) Only problem was they trained them on Russian tanks so guess where they dogs ran when they felt it was time to get a treat? Also, the US officially, it's in the nation's archives, tested a (I really wish I was joking) "Anti-Tank Rock". . . . It was a rock that was shoved into a tank tread to see if rocks could be used to disable tanks. . . . It didn't work, but it was recorded and archived. This was also the era where something as crazy as skip bombing became a thing. Instead of dive bombing (dropping a bomb from a higher altitude generally down onto a target) the idea was on a body of water to come in at a low angle and the correct speed, drop your specially shaped bomb so that it'll skip across the surface of the water like a rock until it hits a ship or a dam or something else off yonder. We've REALLY come a long way from some really weird ideas.

    I feel that if this was one wheel it would do a lot better. With two any bump knocks it off it's path, but with one it would just jump while staying straight since it is basically a gyroscope. It might also move in an arc instead of straight line because of that, but if it reliably doing so then who cares, it can still be aimed.

    @John A cylinder would be fairly unstable when spun up, even at high speed. However a disc of the same weight, but larger diameter would have a tendency to self-stabilize. With that said, however, look up dam busters. It was an operation in WW2 that used cylindrical bombs that skipped over the water to their target. They were in fact spun up before being dropped for both stability and to help them skip the water.

  • @AgentWest

    @AgentWest

    @John I suspect that because that cylinder was on water it did not have any hard obstacles that could mess it up. However there is only one true way to see if this works in SM. BRB, testing theory :)

    You should turn this into an Olympics Multiplayer Monday. You each design an unmanned explosive weapon, and then see which one is the best in a series of challenges. The Explosive Olympics II. There should be some rules, like no more than 10 explosives, no wheels, no glitches, etc. (Thrusters should be allowed, just not for flight) The challenges should be stuff like: Ten pin bowling, thick wall destruction, long distance hits, uneven terrain / obstacles, explosive radius, reliability, etc.

    How did he miss the simple solution. . . . ? REDUCE THRUST! This thing wants to go in the air because the upwards thrust is more than weight of the creation. Because it's bumpy it's going to bounce. Due to that, you get wheel slip. What this means is reducing turning speed won't actually reduce the speed it moves by.

    I think the problem with it tilting up onto its side is that it's too wide. I remember form my basic mechanics class that there's basically only 2 ways to have something spin and stay stable. Around the "longest" dimension and around the "shortest" dimension. And one of those ways is not stable if you can loose rotational energy. I think spinning around the shortest axis is the way that is stable against energy loss. I'm not 100% sure that the types of energy loss applicable to this theory include contact with the ground, but it could be worth a try. (I remember that there was some sausage-shaped satellite that was supposed to spin around its long axis, but they put flexible antennas on it which dissipated energy. That thing started tumbling around and was unusable.)

    "I don't know how incompetent these people were" Incompetent enough to make this deathmachine, clearly.

    I'm thinking that a realistic improvement might be reducing the thruster power. From the horn experiment, it looked like the payload was experiencing a lot of torque. Especially since you're using wheels that aren't exactly round, and made out a material that lacks the same kind of grip that tires have, the reduced power might give it the traction it needs.

    You should try a single-centered-wheel version and see if that makes it more stable

    Multuplayer Monday idea: you build walkers in scrap mechanic (just use the plantigrade machine) and see who can make the best one

    Yes, Indeed. If they had Scrap Mechanic to help design and test their Physically built contraptions.. I imagine some guy running out of the design tent waving a recent Technical drawing printout and shouting.. "Guys we haven't added the two opposing suspension pieces welded together for stability and control to the centre of the build, As clearly stated on this CAD print out.. LOL.

    Try and stabilise it with more thrusters
