"The painting from the canvas up," van Gogh's 'Portrait of a Peasant' from the Norton Simon Museum

Before its presentation at The Frick Collection for the exhibition, van Gogh's Portrait of a Peasant (Patience Escalier) traveled from the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where it was examined by a team of paintings conservators. The results of this close look at the painting and the details it revealed about the artist's technique are presented in this video, which is also accessible in the Frick's Media Room through January 20, 2013.

Well done. I wish there was a "painting from the canvas up" technical examination of all of van Gogh's major works. Very informative. At first glance I might have thought van Gogh did this painting in one sitting since it looks so spontaneous. I know he had a habit of painting many paintings in one session so its interesting that he did this one in multiple sessions.

thanks that was really informative in all the ways I wish to know about. As a painter myself, it can sometimes be frustrating trying to research the methods and colour palettes etc of artists because lots of books look more into the history of the people or places etc. So this video is exactly what id like to see more of. Thanks alot for sharing this. Is there more in this series of 'painting from the canvas up?' My regards from Tom
