One of my favorite series. I put it ahead of "Black Sails" because it's true, then "Spartacus", then "Rome". I urge you to read Sledge's book, "With the Okd Breed..." I 'll be watching every installment of this. Stella broke my heart as well as Leckie's.

The character Stella (and her wonderful Greek family) is not real. The woman Leckie was seeing during his time in Australia was actually married, something he found out late in the tryst...but I guess that sort of story doesn't sit as well with most people, lol. I definitely recommend Leckie's book (Helmet for My Pillow) and Sledge's too (With the Old Breed), both excellent memoirs, 10/10.

@@romainlettuce118 Yes, another one that surprised me was that scene in the first episode when Leckie saw the mutilated Marines in the jungle as they marched by. That is actually something Sledge saw (when looking down from a hill) while on Peleliu. To me, I can't understand why they switched that except maybe to make an early impression about the brutality of the Japanese during WW2.

She was a lovely character though (along with her family). I'm sure that there were similar situations to this one involving an Aussie girl & a US marine (or other personnel). There certainly were some relationships which did survive as there were shiploads of 'war brides' who sailed for a new life in the /US after the war. And a bunch of 'yanks' too who moved to Australia to raise a family with their Aussie girl.

It was based on a number of books including Leckie's book, Helmet for a pillow, Sledge book With The Old Breed, Chuck Tatums book Red Blood Black Sand...about Iwo Jima...and others. The book by Hugh Ambrose, The Pacific, was written while the series was being filmed amd written as a companion book for the series. Just like they changed a great deal of facts in the series Band of Brothers, they made changes to some of the facts in the Pacific, but neither were fiction. Just as the changes in Band of Brothers from the book to the TV series, all facts changed in the Pacific series were pre approved by the surviving veterans

And Chesty Puller there, the highest decorated Marine to ever live, silver stars, Purple Hearts, all that, basically every award except the Medal. Fun fact, he also developed the same basic small unit size and layout and tactics for fire teams and squads that we (USMC) still use to this day.

My grandfather served along side the US at Darwin and in the Pacific in WW2 , he was there when Darwin was bombed and there was a black American GI driving a troop truck whilst the Japanese were bombing, the Aussies including my grandfather were in a bomb shelter watching this GI leave his troop carrier and run towards the Aussies screaming at him to get in. When he arrived one joker said "you forgot your truck mate" to which the GI responded " uncle same got plenty of them, he only got one of me" they all laughed as the bombs dropped.

why does it matter that he was black?

My Grandmother was a war bride from New Zealand, and this episode always gave me an idea of what it was like for my Grandmother and Grandfather.

Before WW2 most people in the US had never been further than 100 miles from home. The places service men and women were sent was almost culture shock.

Minor detail, but when Basilone is being decorated, the Marines at the stadium are wearing British battle dress uniform jackets. These were provided as "reverse lend-lease" to replace uniforms worn out on Guadalcanal.

the Japanese had never fought an enemy that was well trained, well led and had heavy machine gun batteries. Prior to Guadalcanal the Japanese had experienced success fighting the Chinese and their take away there was that; "when faced with a ferocious bayonet charge the enemy will ALWAYS cut and run away." The Marines don't cut and run. The Japanese never did really modify their battle doctrine during the war. "Honor" to them took president over achieving a military objective. So then the bayonet charge in later battles became the suicide "BANZI" charge so they could die with honor.

Gunnery Sargent John Basilone was an extraordinary Marine and it was a great honor to serve in the same unit he was in.

Hey guys, just wanted to answer your question about heart murmurs. I had a double murmer actually, after getting rheumatic fever as a boy. The murmer went away thankfully in time for me to join the Navy. This happens often. As boys grow up the murmer can go away.

Ran in my family; my dad, me, and my son. My father's 4th heart attack killed him and my son's required surgery. I got lucky and outgrew it. So far.

I watched this immediately after Band Of Brothers but the first two episodes didn't grab me like Brothers did. But boy did my opinion change real quick. This show is so damn good.

I was the same way. I Watched The Pacific when it came out when I was in high school. I just found the first four episodes extremely boring compared to BoB (which I saw in 6th grade), and stopped. Years later I'd watch it again and I started to really appreciate it. Nowadays, I think I prefer it to Band of Brothers, but I love them both. I just wish The Pacific added maybe one more episode to spread out Episode 9. For such a major battle it deserved more imo, and With the Old Breed had plenty of material.

I'm very proud of the opinions the Marines had of our lovely city, and when I learnt they still have the southern cross on their emblem, and the song Waltzing Matilda is one of their songs just fills me with joy

You have probably heard this a bunch of times now already but Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is hard working on the third show.

FYI - All winners of the CMH must be saluted first by every rank even generals out of respect for the honor for all who earned the award! The actor Audey Murphy even challenged Gen. Clark in Hollywood on a movie set by refusing the shake hands with Clark until he saluted first.

I was stationed in New Zealand in the US Navy. 81-85 on my way to Antarctica. Old timers still appreciated us, That was about it. You know what it takes to get a New Zealand girls pants down….. one Yank.

Basilone almost heaving on his citation is a great charector moment... It makes it clear they aren't portraying him as some standard hero figure cause he got the coveted medal... he was one of the boys who just knew his shit and did a notably good job...

The Medal of Honor is *not* some "coveted" medal, like some Olympic trophy, dude. It's awarded after some seriously terrible shit no one that had 1/2 a brain cell would "covet," and awarded posthumously almost 20% of the time, so show some respect. SMH.

The best part about the bar scene for me is when he hits Basilone and you see every single Marine in that place up and ready to fight along side him.

11:20 John Basilone was actually a champion boxer when he was in the Army in the Philippines. So, be careful who you take a swing at. They may be much better at that than you.

My grandfather served in ww2 1st infantry division 18th regiment U.S army from 1941 t o 1953 hes a 102 now he served in sicily,africa,france and many other places he lost his leg to a grenade in korea

Basilone did so much that he has a random foot bridge at a NJ rest stop named after him. I had just watched The Pacific and was taking a trip to NYC. Stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the plaque. Sat down and relaxed, all of the sudden I wasn't in such a rush to get to the city.

My father’s friend who was in the Royal Navy was a little like Leckey. He met a woman whilst docked up in Indonesia and went AWOL. He was caught by the MPs and sentenced to 3 years in Military prison, there’s nothing some will do for love but duty will always prevail.

About the Banzai charge tactics: It worked well for Japanese in the past where they faced surprised and unprepared opposition who handled WW1 and older weaponry. Not so much when facing industrial output of US machine guns. Also, there is a difference between invading someone and being invaded. They prepared meticulously before every attack so they countered every advantage of the enemy. British India? They had bikes so they moved their forces much faster than marching British which also tired them out more. They also made sure they had some old tanks as support against infantry as British in India did not have tanks and it was a huge advantage. Such preparation was typical of Japanese offensives. And while they prepared for American counteroffensive they suddenly had to face an enemy that also prepared beforehand. Machine guns do not care how brave you are or how loud you scream as you run. During American offensives the losses due to Banzai charges got so bad that military leadership requested permission to abandon that tactic and civilian imperial administration refused due to "historical and cultural significance" of it. Yeah.

I met Mitchell Paige when I was about 13. He was the Guest of Honor at a Marine Corps Tanker's reunion my parents and I were at. I thought it was cool meeting him, but I didn't really underatand the significance of it until I joined the Corps.

Yep it's MEL'BURN' (well it's 'burn' if you are an American because 'r' but most Australians pronounce it Melbun 😂) My state was still doing home stays with US sailors/marines in the 1980's and 90s (may still do it I'm not sure) . when they docked at Fremantle in Western Australia. Those servicemen that want to stay with a family when they are here apply and families would take them to stay at their home. They were taken sight seeing and camping or just hung out with the family and kids (a lot of married servicemen took up this offer as they missed their familes and we didn't have internet and stuff back then). I also may have wandered into the nightclub district and chatted to a few lovely guys back in the day. Always polite and sweet. The good ol' days.

I remember when I PCSed (switched duty stations) to Lewis Washington. All of my brothers that I served and was deployed with in 3rd ID 4th brigade was such a hard goodbye. Although war wasn't as brutal when I served than Guadalcanal but war is war and only a few experience what it's like to build such a bond.

I love how so much tighter the stories are in this series. Gets to heart of lives and not just screen shots. Personal. I feel it more.

Nikki & Steven, don't wanna burst your bubble too much, but the machine guns that were being used in the previous two episodes were water-cooled .30 cal Browning Model M1917-A1s. The big outer canister around the barrel was filled with water to cool the barrel. However, you are sorta right in that that part does indeed get as hot as the barrel. Troops would have to change the water in them whenever they got a chance to do so. This is one of the reasons these types of guns are no longer used. Now with air-cooled guns, the barrels are interchangeable. And you just unscrew the old one and put a new one on.

John Basilone is basically Captain America in the real world... I've seen in movies that you're supposed to salut superior officers, but someone who has earned The Metal of Honor can receive a salut from anyone first. (They're very rare and you're a superstar if you have one).

I remember watching this Episode, and when they got to the Aussie picking a fight with Basilone and his friends, all I could think of was, "Don't Pick a fight with the street kid from New Jersey!"

I teach nursing cardiology and as to the murmurs, it completely depends on the type of murmur (where in the heart it is) and how severe it is. Sledge’s book never mentions a murmur as it states he was convinced to go to college to try to become an officer, but he hated college as he wanted to fight, not be at home taking classes. But if he did have one it is not uncommon at all for a person to outgrow a murmur.

That opening bit with the dickhead Aussies was a reference to the real tension that started to develop between Americans and the Aussies. American GIs had a dress uniform, the Aussies didn't. Americans were paid more. Thanks to the supply system, Americans could get a lot of things that were severely rationed in Australia due to the war, like silk stockings. Finally, there was a large disparity in the number of available Americans and the number of available Aussies for the women to choose from. So the Americans were better dressed, could afford to take ladies out on the town, could give them highly desired gifts, and there was more of them. It all culminated in the Battle of Brisbane, where basically a city wide brawl broke out between the Americans and Aussie. The story is longer than I wish to relate but a quick Google search will tell you all you need to know. I do love how they show the difference between the battle hardened Marines and the Aussie cadets. The Aussie punches Basilone, whose head barely moves. Basilone punches the Aussie and if I remind the show right, knocks him out in one punch. The asshole nature of it aside, you got to admit that shot on the cow was impressive. Looked like it was over 150 yards away and he got it from a moving train. Oh boy, with how you're talking about John, can't wait to see Ep8

With the bulk of American accents, Melbourne is enunciated more like "Melb ern" . The "e r n" is a short sound as it is in Bernard. It' is absobloodylutely NOT how that Officer said it, he said "bourne" as in "The Bourne Identity". We can spot any Yankee tourist who says it that way within earshot, which depending on which part of the states they come from can be anywhere between 150 - 400 metres. Sauce. (Fountain :p) I'm an Aussie bastard.

Interesting Military Fact. Medal of Honor recipients, no matter what their rank, are saluted by every military member. Even the officers who outrank the MOH recipients are required to salute. That’s the reverence paid to guys like John Basilone. Those guys are a different breed.

That Greek family was exactly as Greeks are. My wife is Greek, and from the first moment in Greece, I was home, with family. A father that takes me to football, and coffee bars to watch basketball, calls me O γιος μου, My son. A Greek mom that keeps buying me clothes and snacks and calls me Αγόρι μου, My Boy. My family doesn't even say that. Grandma asks 20x if you want food, to give a full plate anyway. Grandpa tells stories. They don't have a son, but I became their son, I talk more to them then to my own family. I love it also when they visit us, in The Netherlands.

It's been 20 years and I'm still of the opinion that Reveille is still the worst thing to wake up to with a hangover.

The scenes for the show were actually filmed in the Melbourne showgrounds, whereas in reality they were put in the MCG. Alot of the tensions came from the fact that most of the Aussie guys of fighting age werent at home at the time being posted in the Pacific, Nth Queensland, NT and on way back from Nth Africa at the time, preparing for the potential invasion, so the young Americans were seen as being interlopers, and they guys left behind that did fight them having a bit of a chip on their shoulders from not being able to be serving in the 2nd AIF at the time.

For many year Johnny Carson used to have Medal of Honor recipients on the Tonight Show. David Letterman took those duties on after Johnny retired. It was one of the first things recipients did after the White House presentation. I used to work with a lot of former Marines. I found it hard to believe one could shit, shower, & shave in 5 minutes but everyone claimed they could. I really liked working with them because everything was super clean. There were no idle hands in a work day. They used to tell me “Marines police the world”.

Things is this happened to my dad when he was in Vietnam he went to Australia for R and R and was offered just a thing. My dad told me a beautiful Australian woman told him don't go you can stay here I'll keep u warm in bed make u breakfast and dinner for life. My dad told me he was so tempted to abandon his post which is obviously a federal offense and that's desertion but he did decline and returned to the states. I don't know if i was in his position if I could make the same choice. quite the dilemma huh?

Melburnian's represent! Yeah, everyone here says it like Mel "burn" or Mel "bun", no one in this city or even in the entire country says it like Mel "born". Only ever hear it called that from people from overseas.

Filmed here and in a so called mountain range called the youyangs just outside melb! I watched the parade sequence being filmed from my workplace. Great series not as assasseable as band but still great once u get into it!

I saw Tom Hanks and Spielberg directing on set on Flinders St, dressed up in sandbags and with the old cars and trams going back and forth for the street scenes. It took them 3 days to film, including the night shots.

so yeah the "Battle of Brisbane" was basically when american soldiers were coming over to australia they were kinda hooking up with all the women and getting drunk and causing trouble so thats kinda the reason for the disrespect. when it comes to leckie and stella.... well.... it might be safe to assume leckie had a few stellas. 1 who he was hooking up with a bit kinda broke things off with him and he kinda took it well and moved on to the next one before being shipped out

I had a college classmate who had served in Iraq. He was a bit older since he just got out of the military and was using the G.I. Bill to go college. One day I was at his place and picked up the pistol he used to carry overseas, and I jokingly asked him “Have you ever killed someone with this?” And he responded “Not in America.” We didn’t talk anymore about his time overseas.

Oh yeah. Chrsty Pullar. A living legend as long ss he lived.

Local “native” Australians (aside from indigenous Australians) tend to pronounce Melbourne as “Mel-bun”. Small issue, but like us Irish, we tend to forgive the small shit, because there are bigger matters to worry about in the world.

3:40 I’d argue the Japanese committing to frontal assaults on Guadalcanal was the best choice available to them. They were cut off from reinforcement and supply with little hope of reprieve. If the Japanese hunkered down and waited for the Marines to come, they would end up facing a stronger and better equipped force, which would be sure defeat for the Japanese (considering the loss to attrition one faces in tropical fighting). So instead they opted for an all out assault with the hopes of breaking through the Marine’s lines which would scatter them into the jungle and leave the airfield wide open. Sure the Japanese would take heavy losses, but they’d face even more if they did nothing

Interesting fact: Out on the Battlefield the Americans and Australians were allies but in Australia they were enemies. The Australian soldiers actually did not like the Americans because they found them to be extremely rude, not to mention Australian girls were more likely to go after American soldiers than the Australian soldiers. Mostly because they found them more attractive and had better looking uniforms. The battle of Brisbane was a riot that started by a drunk American soldier who was making friends with a group of Australian soldiers, until some American MPs came along and ruined their fun. They took the American which kind of angered the Australians so a brawl kind of started. Getting attention of other Australians, both soldiers and civilians. Which then resulted in a group of American MPs getting trapped in a cantina by an Army of angry Australian soldiers. Pretty much anyone who was in an American uniform was targeted and beaten in the streets. Much like how the German SA would beat a Jewish person. And yes people were killed in this. Sad to say a few Australians met the end of an American shotgun barrel. Which angered the Australians even more. Also Melbourne Is pronounced (MEL- BIN). Australian cities are pretty much pronounced way differently than they are spelt. Much like most British cities in the UK and in New England.
