The origins of Macau's famous Portuguese egg tart

Subscribe to our KZread channel for free here: sc.mp/2kAfuvJ
The Portuguese egg tart has become an iconic treat for visitors to Macau, a special administrative region of China and former Portuguese colony. You may be surprised to learn that it is not authentically Portuguese, but was invented by a Brit. Eileen Stow, sister to Andrew Stow, who invented the treat in 1979, tells us about its origins and how it grew to become one of Macau’s most popular snacks.

The pastel de nata is a traditional pastry from Lisbon. So what Andrew did was basically recreating the pastel de nata (because he didn’t had the receipt for the Portuguese one) naming it egg tart. The first ones are Portuguese, the egg tart is something that came after.

I spent a couple of weeks in Macau in early 1976 and soon became very partial to the local (Portuguese??) egg tarts with the crumbly pastry and soft centres. A real joy to devour a few of them with hot Chinese tea. Whatever anybody says nowadays the ones I savoured back then were great and helped define my Macau experience. The old Sino-Portuguese enclave - pre-development - a lovely, mellow place, a real backwater in a sense a bit like Vientiane in Laos during the early 70s before the commies took over.

I just wanna say i had margarets which was the egg tarts of Stows wife after they divorced if im correct. She wanted to make her own egg tarts as well. People think give her more of a try cause it more indie and has a long line. It still a 9/10 but i still choose lord stows to go to. Might be commercial but it more balanced. Margarets crust was better but it overtook the filling. So lordstows a 10/10 for me. Up to you based on preference. All i know is you guys need to try both if you visit macau. Just wake up at 5 : 30 am to go to margarets since the line is crazy long. But lord stows must be eaten in macau tho...taste a bit different in my country.
