Some comments are funny. I can bet the people hating on this Boxster or this model in general never owned a Porsche. I’ve owned every generation of Boxster, and currently have a 718 Spyder. But I started with the 2.5 featured here. Was my first Porsche. Fantastic cars. And I own a 911 also but I still love the Boxster.

I am very fortunate to have bought myself a black 986 soft top earlier this year! The owner was a kind Englishman, the car belonged to his wife before she passed away. Otherwise being a bit dusty, that car was mechanically still in excellent condition, even for a 20 year old car! We agreed on $11k, as he originally listed it for $12k. After inspection which came back excellent, I realized i could be sitting on a future classic! I highly recommend this car, i was originally looking at Z4’s and Miata’s. But i think i made the right choice instead! 20 years old, 68k miles on purchase, such a gem! 😊

I bought the cheapest, crappiest 1998 2.5. It has a few dents and had a few faults too. I had no trouble fixing everything myself, it was fun to work on a qualifying car with zero rust. The car puts a huge smile on my face everytime I see it and drive it. Still has knackered AC, small dents and a few other things crapped out but I don't really care.

@@thatcopenguy The 2.5 has all the sensory delights but without the added risk of engine failure. It is the lightest, it has the most durable engine. When I get in mine I always put the window down just enough so I can hear the engine start up. The sound is intoxicating. It is not fast, but with the sound and low driving position and practicality it is really all you could want. It also feels extremely well made. Great review! I personally purchased my white 2004 986 three years ago, and settled on a price tag of $13K. Here in Alaska, these are very hard to find, but buying from the original owner, having 12,000 original miles, and having no modifications, I couldn't pass up the deal. Inspection from my local dealer came back flawless, and I even got offers from customers touring through the shop to buy upwards of $22K. Even for the money, I just couldn't justify letting it go. The fact Porsche has spun attention back to the early models is extremely refreshing, including the PCCM Plus option to include Android Auto/Apple Carplay. It's great to see that you can still own a Porsche classic, and give it a modern feel. Sure, it's not the 996, it's an H6 with ~217HP, it's viewed by the upper community as "the poor man's Porsche", but it handles beautifully, looks attractive, and sounds great. Never disappointed.

I just bought a 1999 Silver/Red 986 with factory hardtop in great condition from Westmont Porsche near Chicago as a garage-mate to my 2020 Cayman GT4. I absolutely love this car. So delicate and fun to drive. Even my wife who generally thinks my cars are too raw enjoys our top down drives by the beach in it. I wanted a first gen to get that more vintage look and feel. The red interior was available only by selecting the all leather option and it’s a really well built place to sit in. The seats are actually more comfortable than the GT4 (non-carbon) and my Civic Type R. With how crazy prices have become I still can’t believe how little I paid for a car that has gone through a Porsche dealers service center and got their seal of approval. If I can describe how it feels to drive, its like a smaller, open, slower, older version of my GT4, so yes, its a real Porsche.

Basalt black with cinnamon extended leather and alu pack, lictronic xenon headlights, 18" carrera style wheels, big reds and the largest 260PS engine. It's frankly amazing to drive. With the the pandemic and my dogs at the last stage of their livesnow, we haven't driven it in a while, but we're going to get some good driving holidays out in it when we can. I can say that the main thing that got me to look at the Boxster was the ballooning price of Japanese rear-drive cars, it used to be you got an MR2 because it was as fast as a Boxster for less money, but now you can find Boxsters for about the same money with a far neater carfax, add to that factory rust protection, missing in most Japanese cars of that vintage, and you've got a winner.

The balance of the mid-mounted engine and the confidence with which it holds the road is insane. Tires and brakes are cheap and they don't wear at all because car is light. It's even pretty good on fuel. Take for a gentle sunday drive and it will give you 7-8 Litres per 100km. In Stuttgart, there is a Boxster mounted on a wall. The workers call it "The Jesus Boxster". Because it saved Porsche. And thanks to Toyota, they could finally build a car without spending 13 man-hours on a steering wheel - the same amount of man hours in a whole Ford Taurus, BTW! The downside is that if you cover up the steering wheel logo in a Boxster, you feel like you are sitting in a Lexus, not a Porsche. Once you get moving though, that feeling quickly leaves.

Some people like to look down on the Boxster because it's not a 911 but then lose their minds over an S2000. A 986 is basically a german equivalent, slightly less power but less weight too. The Boxster is a monster on a canyon road, the amount of speed you can carry through a corner and how early you can get back on the gas is hilarious. It's got amazing hydraulic steering, it's light, it can cruise comfortably at high speed with the top down (and have a conversation), it makes nice flat six sounds. It's very easy to work on too if you can turn a wrench. If you are that worried about the IMS get an earlier car with a dual row, or replace it with a oil fed Pedro's garage unit for less than a grand.

An important thing for people to know is that the fact this shares so many parts with a 911 is both a blessing and a curse. You get so much of a 911 for so little money comparatively, but it means when nearly *anything* needs replacing, it's going to cost the same as a 911 that's worth at least double. I've got a 987 and although they're affordable up front, repairs and replacements often sting a lot more given you're paying what a 911 owner pays for much of it.

The engine is in THE correct place for a Porsche because all the great racing Porsche racers from the glorious 550, the 904 to the 962 etc are all MID ENGINE cars only the 911 and 356 and before are rear engined, which is a bad idea for larger heavier and more powerful motors

  • @kc550

@aldo4580 no worries at all! I'll share my opinion on each one, and hopefully that helps. Boxster: Much better looking in person. Very compact and low. Beautiful curves (fun to wash... not in a weird way lol). I'm not a convertible guy, but I always left the top down (looks way better) and loved the visibility and airflow. You sit nice and low in it, and it handles incredibly well - super flat and planted. The performance was mediocre, but the sound was intoxicating. The air ducts are on either side of the body, right behind you, so you get this throaty induction noise in each ear as you get on it. The whole thing is just a blast to drive - just get an S if you can. Everybody looks at it too. It's just a classic at this point. The frunk and trunk space was nice, comfortable seats and nicely laid out interior. Hidden cubby behind the headrests. Engine is a bit annoying to access, as it's under the soft top and an access cover. Headlights are super expensive and almost always have a yellow/burnt interior from the HID bulbs, which sucks given the replacement cost. Everything is somewhat expensive on that car, really, but very reliable. The IMS bearings weren't really an issue for the first gens as well, so no worries there. Overall, I highly recommend getting one as they are fantastic value at their current price. It was the car I regret selling the most. The E30: Such an iconic, cult classic vehicle. It will forever increase in value. It's a very mod-friendly vehicle if you're into that. Smells like crayons inside (like most 80s/90s german cars from their waxy sound deadening). The reverse opening hood is cool - dodge viper/corvette vibes. Handling is decent, but feels like an economy car - perched up and a bit of body roll. Power is meh, less than the boxster. It didn't really encourage getting on the throttle much, but that can be fixed with cams and other upgrades. Just not that much of a performance engine out of the box - feels old timey. Everyone loves it though. Lots of comments wherever I'd park, thumbs up, smiles etc. More than the boxster. Got kind of annoying after a while lol. It's very rgonomic, much like the acura integras I've had. Very small with great visibility. Just kind of a classic vehicle, but as far as value goes, it's mostly hype. I would never pay over 5k for one as they are just not worth it. Mind you, it's not a bad investment, but you won't enjoy it nearly as much as you would the boxster unless you throw a bunch of money at it. Hopefully all of that helps lol. I'd go for the boxster if I had to do it again, but certainly the S as you'll want the extra 40hp (I believe). E30 is just a bit like a granny car stock, while the boxster is a true sports car. Just feels much more special.

@@kc550 thanks for taking your time to reply, i had to ask because you seem like the only person taht have owned both ahaha. Your comment is very important to me. Just to add a few points: i imagined a lot of what you said and i understand that the boxster is just better in everything... one of the mayor pros of the e30 here in Italy is that you dont have to pay the annual tax and the insurance is just 150 euro per year since it has more than 30 years, whereas the boxster comes at 500 euro per year to tax plus 450 to insure it. Price wise a boxster S would cost around 16k while an e30 around 13k. So the big difference is mainly in the tax/insurance and maintenence i guess. You had a boxster S? A lot of people seems to suggest to get the 2.5 since it's lighter and it is just enough, i am more interested in the S, but there are a lot of different models/years, would you suggest the first S verison or the later ones? Thanks a lot and sorry for my english not at the top ahaha

Sadly, in New Zealand, even the original 2.5-litre cars have not fallen to decent prices yet. The cheapest Boxster in the country is on sale for $16,000 or 8,000 GBP. Better to save some more, and buy a 996, in manual, which definitely will appreciate much harder than any Boxster. Better yet, buy a 996 Turbo - 2/3rds of a 959 but with a stiffer and better-looking body shell, and much better software and interior. It is the supercar bargain of the century.

I had a go of a customer of mine's Boxster special edition. I gave him a fright when I came in to a roundabout trying to brake but with such a tight pedal box my foot was also on the accelerator. Dipping the clutch helped me slow, but sent the revs through the roof too! He later reported he then did the very same... Found the gearing of the Boxster to be too tall too. If it had a shorter final drive it would have been much better, much more fun. As it was, the Subaru WRX I had was quicker and more fun (I think at that time I may not have had the Prodrive Performance Pack installed - it made it even more drivable).

People, if you live in a Country where it costs less than 10K (€/£/$), and you earn 30K/year, without main compromises, just buy it, love it, enjoy... Why would you through similar money at anything else?! I am 48, living in Portugal. Here they cost 17K €+. And most of us ear less than 25K. Also have family, kids I need to drive to school. I wouldn't think twice if I could afford two cars, was single or my kids were already grown up.

Ugh I hate that people go to the next cheapest thing to try to flip it to make a buck then it's no longer cheap for regular people who want a nice driving experience on the cheap. These things were so cheap and for good reason but the prices already going up. Auto journalists don't help it either basically giving these investors free advertisment lol. All these fucking people treating everything like investments ruin the accessibility aspect that old cars used to offer once upon a time for working class auto enthusiasts. The craziest market is the Japanese import market tbh. People asking like $15+k for some ratty, automatic, nothing special civics lol. Once upon a time old cars were just old cars, where only a few people understood the appeal and the prices made sense. Low volume models and some highly desirable cars would pick up price but never like this. Expecting to see prices shoot up like they said pretty quick, like they did for the 924/944/928/968.

I owned one for 4 and half years from 2009. They are plagued with issues, especially suspension parts. Things WILL fail constantly, like the Windows regulators, CV boots, coffin joints. Unless you want to potter to the Bingo and back at the weekend you should avoid these like the plague. Money pits. They are cheap for a reason. The 987s are even worse.

All these Bargain Boxster videos doing the rounds. As it's 2021 (well, 22 now) the Boxster is basically 25 years old. I mean, yes it was a cool car that tried to push design 15 years ago but sadly the Digital and tech age beared down upon it and gave it the cold-shoulder. I think it's well worth spending on the 2014 specific model Boxsters. Quite a bit more; but a whole whole new World of fun.

If the intent of assembling all the selected cars, is to whet our appetite (and make us bump up the 'views' tally), this view actually dissuades us (potential) viewers.
