MJ was sued by Manu Dibango for saying that portion in Starting Something and Manu won the lawsuit.

Soul Makossa. We were old enough to know when the Original song was created in Africa. Much True Respect and Gratitude to Baba Manu Di and Michael Jackson

Soul Makossa by Manu Dbango was a monster hit song when I was a kid so Michael, also a kid when that song was released I am certain was well aware of that song. He couldn’t have just pulled that sample out of nowhere.I read somewhere that Manu Dbango did sue Michael Jackson for sampling that song without permission and received back royalties.Give credit to the artist for his work.

James Brown said in an interview that he was the 1 that told MJ that as long as a song was catchy and had soul, you could squeeze sounds in between lyrics and ppl wouldn’t care.

I always thought it meant something and that it was of African origin, which made us black folks feel even closer to MJ, and felt that he was putting his cross over audience in tune with his musical roots.
