I purchased this device a few months ago. It's very easy to use and the light weight enables you to wear it with the lanyard comfortably. I tested it outdoors, shopping for groceries, to watch TV, use my iPad and at a show. I have AMDwith poor central vision in one eye and virtually none in the other. My peripheral vision is good enough for me to navigate without a cane during the day. But I cannot read signs, see faces or read ordinary sized text. Here army observations on this device: 1. Battery life is limited to less than 2 hours. Forget using it for movies, concerts or just walking around for a day. 2. Brightness level is good with adequate indoor lighting. But it isn't bright enough in low light, overcast days or shadow. 3. Resolution is poor. Even the lowest magnification is pixelated. I would not recommend purchasing this device for this reason alone. 4. Customer service is nonexistent. After receiving the device, the distributor stopped responding to text, email or phone calls. I would not purchase this device if you want to audition it because they will not give you instructions on how to return or advise you on use. 5.I did not find this device to be comfortable for extended periods as a wearable. 6. Due to the poor resolution, I did not enjoy TV. For live performance, same issue; only worse if you use the magnification and the lighting is dark. General comments: I have auditioned several 3 wearables and they all have drawbacks for my condition, or do not offer functionality that is available with other devices. All of the devices I tried are disappointing, and I learned that few visually impaired people are benefiting from them. The costs are high, and the devices are in their infancy; in the case of the Onyx, there is little point in offering a device with a camera resolution similar to a children's toy. What is not analyzed on this channel is a cost benefit analysis. For example, digital magnifiers are now automatically included on all tablets simply by using their own cameras. My tablet and smartphone have camera resolutions 2 or 3 times higher than the Onyx. Text to speech is standard on most smartphones for free. If you want to see your tablet, computer of iPhone, there are now many AR and VR wearables that are superior to the Onyx, esight, iris vision etc. at lower price points. Instead of spending thousands on devices, you can get years of service from Be My Eyes or Aira. Augmented reality glasses are now connecting to smartphone screens (screen mirroring). I believe you will be able to connect to your phone with these advanced glasses, and use the phone magnifier in creative ways, leveraging the superior technology and resolution of the latest smart glasses. While smart technology is relatively new, I foresee a rapid and promising opportunities for us. Save your money, just ask any teenager what your smartphone and tablet can do for you, then get creative.

For the last 4 years I have used a Samsung vr headset with a galaxy note 9 and it was great, Total cost was about £500. The relumino app was fantastic the only drawback was the weight. Last week oculus sent an update which means it no longer works. I need a new device but this one sounds worse than mine. Thanks for the post. I am thinking about trying to make one of the new monitor headsets by tcl work with a camera like a GoPro. I am not forking out £5-0 for these rubbish headsets.

20/600 here and a technology accessibly trainer. I travel a lot by myself and I can see this being a great asset. And it is actually the most excited I’ve gotten about a product like this in a very long time. Thank you for sharing.

Sam, thanks for the excellent review. This device looks like it would be helpful for tasks where you need both hands and just need a boost to see things clearly. After a lot of internal resistance, I've finally jumped on the O C R bandwagon.because trying to read with my eyes has gotten physically painful. A device like this looks like it would give me access to my surroundings when I can go out and about again, however! Was really neat seeing the buildings on the streets you were walking, and I bet this would also help someone like with pedestrian crossings. For now I usually find it most reliable to follow other pedestrians, but not all the places I want to walk get a lot of foot traffic when I'm there.

Got super excited when I found this…saw the price and was reminded why I stopped looking for tech to help with my low vision.

I tried this today and was pretty impressed. Traditional headsets don't work with my vision so was relieved to find something that works. I had the same problem with reading text, at least small text, as you. I think the camera hardware is making in that department and simply cannot focus. In general it could use a higher resolution camera for better all argue performance, perhaps even a multi-lens array for different situations. I also did do with more filter options as well as letting us bump up the contrast further. Lastly, let us manually adjust exposure too because the brightness options are still too limited.

@@MattLee-gj4wh it's main limitation was that it didn't have the right camera set up for focusing on close objects. And and I say 'was' because they've sadly gone bust now.

For point and see use, consider optical devices. No batteries, some are waterproof, many have variable focus but very few have variable magnification. Thanks Sam. This does look attractive.

The design is nice and seems to be much lighter like the eSight but the NuEyes Pro s great as well imo. Works well with Morbus Stagardt for me.

I have seen a lot of your videos on the wearable technologies. super informative! Is there an expo that we, as end users, can go to that would have all the different kinds and brands/manufacturers available to look at and try?? It is very confusing as to which would work best for my condition. Macular Degeneration with GA. It would be nice to go somewhere and see them all and compare. Thanks for the video and review, always very balanced. I’ve tested this several months ago (both professionally and personally), unfortunately the Onyx is a really poor option, poor image quality, missing basic features. You’ll struggle if your acuity is around 6/36 (20/100) or lower, image quality drops off a cliff at higher levels of magnification. I tested this alongside a mainstream smart phone and the Onyx comes no where near in performance. The sales pitch I got was pretty easy to shoot it down. Missed opportunity here unfortunately, go buy a smart phone if you’re looking for a similar option.

Good to have another point of view. I think comparing this device with a smartphone makes sense if all you're trying to do is spot things in the distance, but a smartphone doesn't let you do tasks hands free while magnifying. Making repairs, doing crafts, reading sheet music while playing an instrument come to mind. The comparison should be with other wearables if you need both hand free. If all you want to do is spot objects during a walk, a monocular will do the job and is relatively inexpensive.

The resolution on the Onyx is too poor for any detail work, no chance this is suitable for reading - you mentioned reading music, the image quality just isn’t up to the task, any slight head movements and the refresh rate can’t keep up. I was hoping this would fit in the affordable wearable video magnifier section but quite simply it doesn’t do the job it’s supposed to, doesn’t matter if it is affordable if it’s not fit for purpose. I got the feeling that they were working on 5 year old tech repurposed from previous versions (just my impression). Try a gearVR headset with a smartphone and see the performance difference. Really wanted this to be good but sadly it just isn’t. Other types on the market that I’ve tested (eSight, Iris Vision, AceSight, Jordy) perform better although outrageously priced for what they are.

@@nicholascollins4445 I haven't heard of the gearVR headset, so will check it out. I don't need most of the features included in the other options you mention, just a bit of hands free magnification, so never could justify spending $2500+. It all comes down to whether individual needs can be met at a reasonable price, and the Onyx may fit the bill for some, even if it doesn't work for you.

Hi! Have you ever tried the Nreal AR glasses or the Rokid AR glasses? My boyfriend has LHON. He’s tried vision buddy & multiple other devices, but I think those might work better for him.

It sounds great, I only have sight in one eye it would be great if there was something like that it had slightly more magnification so I could go to the football and watch my team win the final again those people out of Australia may I recommend you Barrick for the Melbourne Demons in the Australian football league who after 57 years won the grand final last year. Slightly off topic I know, but that’s what I’d like to see with an aid like this as I have very minimal site in my right eye is there something people can recommend with a bit more magnification and ease of use.

Hi Sam :) It would be nice to have a slightly bigger battery. If you're going to a show, A lecture, A movie etc, most of those last longer than 2 hours. It is a good basic idea though :)

I am an audio engineer and I have to navigate a lot in the course of a gig. Does this device quickly focus, or does it take time to adjust near and far? I’ll probably have to get 2 devices. I need one for load in and setup and one for sitting at the console. Our visual needs are similar. I would love some input. Ty

Hi. I worked with the team who developed Onyx. We would have loved the battery life to be longer but we had to compromise to keep the weight and size down. Even an extra hour would have pushed the weight over our limit and made the product bulky. We did however build in lots of power saving features. If you use it for regular short bursts, the battery will last most of the day. And if you want to watch a 2 hour movie, you can plug in a mobile battery and Onyx will run indefinitely. As battery tech improves, and mobile computing gets more efficient, we will keep improving performance.

@@StephenHicks1 I'm an electrical engineer and I have massive respect and gratitude for everyone that works on assistive technology thank you. You are really qualitatively improving life for other people. I use a portable battery bank that I can charge my phone into, it's about the size of a deck of cards. I imagine carrying around one of these could help prolong the user experience. I'm very excited about the future for visually impaired people considering all the technological advancements we have been seeing.

I need more color contrast and higher resolution, but I’d like to give it a try.

I would like to see how it behaves in low light. The biggest thing I could use is something that enhances low-light situations, similar to how the image on a cellphone when using the camera looks brighter than what I actually see.

This one doesn’t have the processing power to brighten the image like a cell phone does. That being said, the VR style headsets that use smart phones will do this. I wore the iris vision in a museum once. Couldn’t see anything in the room with my naked eyes, pretty much pitch black to me. But when I put on the iris vision, it was like someone turn the lights on in the room. I could see everything.

I like the price point quite a lot. The ability to hang on a lanyard is cool as well. Not having googled, I wonder about the screenshots and where/if they’re saved. One thing I’m looking to do is read sheet music. I’ll have to follow this one.

Hi Nancy Thanks for your comment. We worked really hard and made loads of compromises to reach an acceptable price point. Some of these compromises are reflected in the comments, such as the camera resolution, but I think this product covers just enough of the essentials to be worth it! At the moment the screenshots are deleted once they are closed. We weren't sure whether people would have concerns over privacy so we erred on the safe side. It is totally possible to save the screenshots in the future if that is what people want.

What is the refresh rate like? When you turn your head, does it stutter to keep up with the change in visual direction at all?

It is pretty fast. The frame rate is about 45 frames per second, and is slightly higher in bright light or TV mode. The image latency can be as low as 70 ms. In good light you wont notice any lag. In low light however it noticeably slows the camera down and you might notice a lag.

Have you tried the Canon Powershot ZOOM? It's a monocular digital camera with IBIS and is mostly used for bird watching, but can also be beneficial to us VIPs.

I’ve seen videos about it but haven’t tried it myself.

I am a veteran. So i go to the veterans administration hospital for my eyesight "macular digineration" and they have provided me with equipment to use around the house to be able to read and do hobbies, but they have never provied me anything like this. Which would allow me to go outside the house and be independant on myself instead of dependant on other people to tell me what is around me. And to me it would not matter how the design of the device is as long as it made me independant.

I definitely wouldn’t try it. In fact, I’m sorry to say that I don’t think you could do that with any wearable device. The main problem is that you don’t have any depth perception when you’re looking through a camera. So, you might think you were further away from an object than you really are. It just wouldn’t be safe.

There is only one camera, so it doesn't give true stereoscopic depth. However the camera is in the middle and right inline with your eyes, so it is great for hand-eye coordination.

It doesn’t, they are completely different devices. The Onyx is a more simple, budget version of a wearable electronic magnifier. All it does is magnify, colors, object identification, etc. It doesn’t do anything fancy like the iris vision. Plus the iris vision has a much better camera, much better screens, etc. It’s using much better hardware than the onyx. Of course, it’s also $1000 more expensive.

Tested it (personally and professionally) and no, struggles to achieve decent image quality at higher levels of magnification. Also, image isn’t stable enough for movement (reading across a line). I doubt this is the product for you.

I doubt it, this device doesn’t really work well for vision worse than 20/200. That being said, there’s no way to know unless you give it a try.

Canon makes a digital magnifer. It's a monocular. Don't know how good that would be for you, but it might be worth checking out.

@@Primeone1776 right. I don’t need a digital monocular as such. My regular monocular works fine for what I use it for. But a wearable version of the glass is in monocular form which really means just one screen would be a nice thing to have. Should cost a bit less to since you do not need a second screen for the second eye. Way less as well.

Hi - Oxsight sprang into being in 2019 using the Epson Smart Glasses as the basis for their two (?) developing products, of which the Onxy was one. By all accounts, even in 2019, the technology was already several generations outmoded, using a 5 megapixel camera and a screen resolution of only 454 x 454 pixels. I can only guess that it was an enormous flop and, even allowing for the relatively lower price, more or less unusable when compared to competing products. Oxsight ceased trading somewhere between 2020 and 2022 - I can't find any working links to them at all.
