    It is so worth having a big (A3 or larger) sketchbook if you have room for it in your workspace. I'd never have bought one that big for myself, but I found one at my parents' house, and I love being able to do big sweeping movements. It helps me get into the zone really quickly, and allows for more versatility and creativity. I also have a small one that I can carry in my purse. For smaller sketchbooks, the quality of the stuff you can get at dollar stores can be surprisingly good.

    Haha most of them are different brands of pencils and things I've collected over the years but dont actually use much - hence the video about all you really need to draw with! I do talk about some of the other extra materials that were in that pile in this video: Extra Drawing Materials: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYiEqcyjgdqepqQ.html Im happy to do more videos on some of the other products, maybe one on different types of erasers and eraser pens? Or different brands of pencils?

    No, any artist brand pencil is fine. They are all slightly different so once you've been drawing for a bit you might want to try some different brands. Some are softer and darker like Tombow and some are harder and smoother like Staedtler (depending on the pencil model). But all should be similar in terms of the grades 2H, 2B, 6B. Thanks for watching :)

    I don't know why my lines on rough paper are better than smooth paper, I use the same pen and at the same moment, any idea? thank you

  • @ThePencilRoomOnline

    @ThePencilRoomOnline

    Rough paper is a bit more forgiving because of the texture. On smooth paper any small inconsistencies in the straightness of the line or in the weight of the line (how thick or thin) will really show up because there is no texture to hide it. Maybe also something to do with the resistance on the pencil of the rough paper? It may make it easier to control pencil marks. Just some ideas :)

    Nice video, I really like the fact you bring it down to 3 pencils. However your price indication and links are no longer correct. The 12 pencillbox has, at least where I live, currently a big discount on Amazon and is only €5,40. One of your indicated sketchbooks I can not find, I find however one that looks identic but is here €50,00!!!? But amazon has alternatives with good reviews from the same brand that come in your indicated pricerange.

    Thanks for the heads up. I try to update the links every 6 months or so but they can change any time. It looks like they are still valid through amazon.com. Where are you ordering from? Perhaps the links are not available through your local amazon store? I do know that it can be difficult to find the sketchbooks with the spiral binding, plastic cover and the heavy cardboard backing. Here in NZ they are very common but for some reason not so much in other areas!

    Maybe you are correct and this price is only for the Netherlands. Funny, it was 60% discount, now only 30% but only because the changed the median price. So still €5,40 for buyers in the Netherlands. Germany and UK (much) more expensive. As far as I can see this is the standard 9000 series 12 pencil box. Soon I will know, I ordered it. Amazon maybe made a mistake and the price should be €15,40

    Hi Emily, I’m struggling because of my lack of progress in my drawing. I don’t feel like I’m progressing, makes me frustrated and i wont practice. Any advice? Great video as always. Cheers.

  • @ThePencilRoomOnline

    Its a tricky cycle to be in. The most important thing is to practice because without that there is no progression! But I understand how you feel. First you need to decide if you really want to learn how to draw and if you do, you need to make a time each week that you practice - treat it like a job or exercise, there is a time for it and you just go do it whether you feel like it or not, even if you just sit there doodling for 20 minutes. Don't worry how good or bad what you produce is, just do it. Second, the practice needs to be easy or enjoyable. Easy means simple drawing exercises or a simple step by step tutorial. Enjoyable means a subject you are interested in, but not too hard. Birds, flowers etc are good. If it's both easy and enjoyable, great but one or the other is fine. Spend some of your practice time looking for a course, free or paid, with simple drawing lessons you can follow so you dont have to think about what to do each practice time. The hardest thing to manage is your own expectations and how to be accepting of what you produce as you learn. Its a big thing to overcome and a lot of people quit because of it. Thats why doing the practice no matter what is so important and all I can do is reassure you that with practice and some direction from a course or tutorials, you will improve :)
