(E91) A Long Way Home
Written by Mervyn Haisman
Max Van Der Rheede is imprisoned and James is a free man. Samuel discusses his supply of nitrate with James and agrees a price of £25000, payable in 6 months. Baines is told to prepare the Soren Larsson for a long trip, James reveals he is going to South America for 10-12 months. Margarita says she will go as well but James says no as they will be rounding The Horn twice and she would be an encumbrance. James tells Elizabeth he wants to sell 18 small ships to fund a few bigger ones. He has bought half a million tons of Nitrate from Samuel and he will sail out with coal and back with nitrate. James needs a further £25000 to finance his operation and Elizabeth agrees to the loan, again spread over 6 months. He says he will have 20 years to sell it at a profit of £2 million. James and Baines set sail and discover that Margarita has stowed away. Samuel has received his official nomination for parliament after being recommended by Daniel. Elizabeth asks if it is Caroline's idea for him to go into politics. Samuel asks Charlotte to dinner to discuss their children; 'we've both changed' he says. Baines says that James has made a mistake as the river is silted up and that the nearest they can get to the nitrate is by rowing boat. James reveals that he has brought timber with them to build a jetty. James turns down Alf Scrutton's offer to load the nitrate and is threatened by him, saying he will destroy the jetty if it is built. Margarita tells James she is five months pregnant. He says she will have it in Buenos Aires. Margarita bargains with the locals to build his jetty in return for ten boats. We learn that the Charlotte Rhodes, James' first ship, has been sold as part of the liquidation of Onedin ships. Samuel has lost the election and Elizabeth receives a telegram saying that Daniel is missing at sea, presumed drowned. She is widowed for the second time. On board ship, James wakes with a premonition about her. James placates Scrutton by offering him a job for £10 a month to organise the loading of the nitrate, paid 6 months in advance. They set sail with the first load of nitrate and Margarita goes into labour. James tells Baines that he will give him all the help that he needs. A bemused Baines says he has never delivered a baby, 'neither have I' says James. Simon the cook confides that he has delivered three and successfully delivers Margarita's baby. An overjoyed James thanks him and shakes his hand. It is a boy, named Will after captain Baines. On deck James takes the wheel declaring, 'I've got a son'.

I vaguely remember this series was very popular in our home when I was a child. Having watched all of the episodes over the last month or so, I was very impressed with the quality of the acting and attempts to accurately portray life in those days. Onedin was a working class fella made good and unlike today’s profiteers went into the thick of his own mess to reap his profits . I agree all the main characters including Elisabeth and Robert were iconic . The series never tried to disguise the social fall out of the families profiteering as well . Today’s costume dramas from the likes of the BBC are just class affirming wall paper . The licence fee should have been abolished after the broadcast of the final episode of the Onedin line .

I noticed the ladies' rear ends becoming smaller as fashions began to approach the Edwardian era, and telephone use increased. Elizabeth started out as "Liverpool 5". I believe the saga could have gone on for much longer. Upstairs Downstairs made it to 1930. This is not the first time I have binge watched all eight seasons of The Onedin Line and it probably won't be the last. There was much more mileage left for the story and it is a shame it ended.

Well thats the lot. Usual dying per episodes. Where did Sarah go to. Last seen in her Medium story. Odd ending, like they expected another series (if 91 wasnt enuff, great they all were) I expected a grand meeting of the Onedins, raising a glass, then going on a search party for said Sarah. Nonetheless what a great series, super scripts, fantastic acting, tho liberties took ie Margarita pregnancy from her morning sickness to giving birth in less than 3 months or the voyage back took 9 months.! Thanks for posting the last, to date!, series. I might watch it all again before I die...

from wikipedia- Sarah Onedin (Mary Webster), wife of Robert, was always looking to improve her station in life as her husband status rose. She was upset how her husband's brother James borrowed money from him to further his own ambitions. When her husband died, she and her son Samuel ran the business. She was shocked when her son married Charlotte after William got her pregnant. Sarah made attempts to contact Robert through a medium, despite her son Samuel's objections She almost married the fortune-hunting Captain Dampier. She was last heard of as having undertaken a tour of the world.

ptooti Sarah on a World Tour. Hope it wasnt on a James Onedin ship! You will DIE! Well I was 18 when it started, in the Army & by the time it ended I was married & caught the a few eps when Jill Gascoigne joined. When people wanted to leave series the script author only new one way it seems - DIE (cue 'Psycho' musak, eeeee eeeee eeeee eeeee). Am I write thinking when orginal Robert Onedin (one of my fav character/actor roles) left he was replaced with P. Troughton who then came back in Series 7 as a cad after Sarah O. money. I laughed when orginal Robert O. came back again, as if we wouldnt notice! Surely it was easy to write him out for a series. I enjoyed the factual side in 19th C. of 'Indentures' to become a Master of Sea & that these smallish boats travelled the world's oceans & seas, tho in the case of Onedin Line it never left the South West of England aided by some potted palms in front of camera & stormy seas created by buckets of water whilst the sea was like a millpond! Rarely did the 'boat' rock. All the sailors had to do was sway a bit on the floors! Nitpickin' but that is how it was on tv in the 70s. Peter Gilmore. Fantastic role he played. A bit of a rogue really but loveable character. He was no angel & sailed close to the wind & sometimes well well over. Thats what made the series. One thing got my goat was Dunwoody. Why didnt he get his marchin' orders after he was caught doing the latest rage of betting on whether a boat made it across the Irish Sea or floundered with the loss of crew. To think that really happened, I presume. Dunwoody was not my fav. I started watching O. Line on Drama Chan. after suggesting it to them whence watching Duchess of Duke St (another great 70s drama) they then stopped at just over 50 eps with no notice of will continue, so onto KZread (best App ever) and a certain Lance W. who posted series 1-7, thanks Lance, but no Series 8 & thank god to you for it. I thought I may have to watch the German version posted! Mine Gotten Himmel Baines yous Swinehound... I much preferred watchin it on my wee 7" Tablet to the telly. More intimate like when I was a child reading a book under bedclothes with a torch! So I might rewatch the first 50 eps again using said Tablet under the 'Duvet'. It helps having the Wiki ep surmise to 'clarify' things - who what where. It is a saga you can do repeating views of, so much to enjoy, oh back to all change characters, Fogerty. Tom Adams is a good actor but it took some convincing with this switch. Just KILLLLLL him off - everyone get the black costumes out!! Jill C. was great, shame she didnt do the final series but she became Juliett Bravo. When Margaritta was at deaths door (Ive been in plenty of downpours but never got that wet! God they never got that wet on the stormy seas!).. deaths door, I thought here we go again.. Many thanks again Pooti.

Been watching it since 2007 on a season ( a few years - with work and trying to match the original run as best I could ) by season basis every Sunday as per its original transmission this Sunday gone was the first time I got to the last episode . Gutted that my favourite character , Lady Fogarty got such a heartbreaking ending and that final scene is lingers with sadness . I wonder if the production team knew it was going to be the last series ? Some of the plot strands look up in the air and episode 91 feels like it was one too many in the last series . The Max Van Der Hayder Storyline rushed to an abrupt unsatisfactory conclusion . For this soppy epilogue . Perhaps it did go on too long as a serial since the latter serials lost a lot of the raw bite , danger and historical sparseness of the original . All got a bit too cosy when they fast forwarded to the grown children and Re introducing a softer Daniel Fogarty was a mistake Tony Adans was nothing like the original actors interpretation in any way . Maybe they could have brought them back for Christmas specials for a few years to conclude and flesh out the final years of the Onedin Patriarchs and Captain Bains . But the final scene has its merits with a strong Captain Bains and James triumphing in the one area of his life that had bought him so much sorrow .

James, clutching his ship's wheel - "I have a new son". Sun wheel / Wheel sun / Wilson. (Think Tom Hanks, Castaway). The Karate Kid - Danielson. Elton John, Daniel , & Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Charlotte Rhodes / Harlot Rose - ether. (Whore of Babylon / Adamastor / Flying Dutchman eg). Ghosts.
