Wait, Stephanie's idea to use outdated planner books like that is genius! I always felt bad whenever I had blank pages so I stopped getting dated planners, but still felt bad about throwing away clean planners, so this is an amazing idea to use the random ones around the house! They're often on sale for really cheap too since the dates have passed, so it can be an inexpensive way to get a journal with good paper. Thanks Stephanie!

To me Steph's tip was the best. That thing about trying to cherish and remember the small things so you can look back resonates with me and it's not something I journal so... I'll try to do it without it becoming a chore. Connie is right. Everytime I stopped journaling after getting the habit, it was because it became a chore and I just couldn't deal with it on top of life 😅

I’ve been journaling since I was a teen (I am now 65). Boxes and boxes of notebooks in storage. I like trying out different notebooks every time I finish one and need to get another, and my favorite is to write with a gel pen. I think it’s best to write from your heart and don’t worry about composing a narrative. Don’t worry about composing at all. Just write, even if all you can do is put down phrases or a couple words. You want to be honest with yourself bc that’s who you’re writing to, for, and about. It’s fun to look back and see how you came out of a particular time in your life. Also, read the work of famous diarists, to see how they captured their periods of life, and all they felt, bc many things are intangible, but an observant diarist will get it down on paper.

To be honest, I just keep them in a cool dry space in waterproof storage boxes. But that’s an incentive to buy nice notebooks, bc those papers will be more resilient than the paper in a dollar store notebook.

I've started and stopped journaling for a lot of my life, but I've finally taken it up more consistently this year. I've come to realize, for me, that journaling can't just be words. I have to have some other form of art to keep it exciting. I use various photos, poems, quotes, stickers, scrapbooking supplies to keep me excited to write in my journal. I also have taken the mindset that I need to be kind to myself about how much I journal. I write when I can about what I can and if I miss a day, a week, or a month, I shouldn't let that keep me from writing and creating.

Yeay! 🙂 I'm the same way. I try to zhuzh up my notebook with washi tape, stickers, stencils with interesting designs, etc. so I can look forward to sitting down and journaling. It makes the ritual feel less like a chore and more like a therapeutic and creative hobby.

I write a traditional diary-narrative style, and I don't write every day. If I want to do bullet journalling or make a collage, I do that instead. But I always come back to writing. Giving yourself permission to skip or do something else is really important. Be kind to yourself. I cycle through all my fountain pens in a year, plus I use gel pens sometimes. I write about books I have read or am reading in a different ink and I mostly use a different ink every day. I am currently using the Musubi notebook with their own Rasa paper (like Cosmo Air Light) and I wish Jet Pens carried that. The notebooks Musubi makes are so well thought out. Simple, elegant, and a great writing experience, every time, and almost no show-through.

I tend to journal when I'm inspired - could be a movie or YT video essay, a book or something I saw on a walk or in a museum. I use journaling to process and organize my thoughts rather than capture memories but after watching this I think I'll mix it up! I just realized that I have journals that are 40 years old - I've been journaling off and on since 1984 👵🏻

I've struggled with journaling off and on over the years and what's working for me right now is I journal at work first thing in the morning. I've been able to do it almost every day Monday through Friday. Sometimes I will journal on the weekends. I have an A6 Techo and the 5-year journal. I make sure I at least write something in the 5-year, even if it's a day where nothing interesting happened. My memory is terrible and I'm using that as a way to remember what happened in my life.

  • @HumanStealth
    @HumanStealth2 ай бұрын

For me, besides making sure I actually write, it boils down to two very critical things: 1. Find out what you enjoy about the process and expand on it. Make that part of the process so you have something to look forward to. 2. Find out what you don't enjoy about the process and why. For me that was finding the right paper (I prefer smooth paper so my thoughts can flow effortlessly) and making my own journaling system that worked specifically for me. The less friction you have between you and the thing you love, the more you'll find yourself coming back to it. I can't tell you how many times a day I think about getting back to my journal even if it's just to practice my writing because every single aspect of it is tailored to what makes my brain happy 💙

I write everything in a journal! Video game quotes, song lyrics, mood for the day, and general ink swatching I use old planners too for anything. Planners with grid get used to plan my virtual in-game farm plots, for example LOL What motivates me to write is picking an ink I want to use for the day. A dip pen makes it easier to switch daily

I like Connie's mention of trying to not force yourself to write so that it doesn't feel like a chore. I used to journal online a lot, but the famous website dedicated for that seems to have gone very far downhill and is now more bots than people, lol. I think I now only do a yearly roundup. However, switching to writing by hand hasn't been as easy as I'd thought it'd be. Typing out thoughts and painstakingly writing them down manually (literally. Writing gives me hand cramps) isn't exactly the same. I also like to write a lot, and feel I now have to curtail all I might want to say because of those hand cramps. I do have a tinge of advice for writing when your days are the same and mundane, though. As stated in the video, look at the minutia and small moments. I give myself pats on the back when I do household chores because nobody else is going to congratulate me for them (I live alone, lol). Or, maybe you cooked dinner. What did you make? Anything else you'd like to try making? Those little things. I always liked to then round off my journal with talking about something fun. What anime am I watching? What video game am I playing? Getting extremely nerdy here, but back when I wrote fanfiction (well...I sort of still do, though I've had some bad writer's block for years, but I've not given up just yet 😅), I would spitball my story ideas in my journal. Yes, this turned my journal into something I would be absolutely mortified if anyone found, lol. That, I suppose, makes it more of a diary than a journal, but I don't want to switch mediums and books to write about different things. I usually listen to music when I write, so I'd finish off the journal with writing down what song I listened to at the end of my writing. Between this and the part about what hobby I was doing at the time makes it so I now have an interesting time capsule of my life, even when it does feel like each day is the same. I can even remember that I have entires about learning to drive! How hopeless I felt about learning (in my 20's, no less). And then...an entry when I finally got my license! It's so funny now to read those entries about all of my worries and learning that it doesn't last forever and those days will pass 😊. Again, though, I'd just like to get better with writing these things on paper.

What a cool comment! For hand cramps, have you tried a fountain pen? They write with just a light touch and can be much more comfortable than any other writing utensil, especially on smooth paper.

I used to only journal when I had a lot of negative emotions built up, which can be freeing afterwards, but it was also very devastating to read the entries after a long time. I've picked up the habit of journaling every day for 2 years now (using Hobonichi weeks first and switched to Leuchtturm some lines a day to give myself a manageable limit) and it's so much fun. Most of the time I simply write about how I feel or how the day went, no matter how mundane. It helped a lot with my mental health and my intense need to share stuff, thus reducing my time on social media :D.

I began seriously journaling after I did something called "Morning Pages", which is just stream of consciousness writing about anything that comes to mind. I found it helped me with my creativity, since I'm an artist. Then I transferred to journaling instead of "Morning Pages", but it's basically the same thing with added notes on family and current events that interest me. I love using fountain pens and various inks and nib sizes. I don't use any particular brand of notebooks, just whatever is at hand, and confess there have been some unfortunate choices as far as how the paper took the ink, but as long as it's readable I don't worry about it. Look up "Morning Pages" and see if that inspires you to write or gives you some ideas about what to write.

Great video! I journaled pretty consistently for 10 years, writing about daily life, music, travel, dreams, books, and everything in between. Life got much busier and I stopped, which I regret because it was probably a time when I could have used it most. But I made it a goal this year to make it a habit again and so far, so good. It really has become a fun way to relax and unwind. And even though my life isn't nearly as interesting as it used to be, Stephanie's tip is right on. Start with the little things... the weather, something in the news that caught your attention, a meme you saw. Heck, I already noted in my journal that I watched this video about journaling lol. If you're in the mood to write something a little more thoughtful, just do a search for "journal prompts" and you're bound to find something. Another thing I like to do is paste an old photo into my journal and write about it. Try to remember everything I can about that specific moment, what I was doing, what was happening around me, how I felt, etc. For me, the best part about journaling is going back and reading them. Most times I cringe, sometimes I laugh, and other times I scratch my head because I come across things that I never would have remembered if I didn't write them down. Plus it's interesting to be able to see how you and your life have changed over time---things like priorities, opinions, etc.

I don't journal but I do write my thoughts to vent my emotions when I am stressed and need to release my pent-up feelings so I don't go crazy or just find some inspiration and write poetry or just random things or ideas. It tends to mostly me venting my feelings because it is hard to find a trustworthy person to listen as too many have betrayed my trust in them. Probably not what you were thinking when asking if we wrote journals. But it really helps me release my emotions onto a paper so I don't keep them bundled inside of me. I honestly found keeping two journal type notebooks one a cheap one where you will write without care what you are thinking about anything at all without considering how it looks like on the paper or how it is organized. Then at home later you can organize it and write it neater in the more nicer and probably a bit more expensive journal notebook. That would allow you to highlight, place stickers, put in proper sections or however you journal, because I always found that it is harder to keep everything in order when the need to jott something down or just end up writing a long page because of relationship issues and instead of yelling at them just move somewhere else and start writing it down.

@amypanddirtytoo1926 Yeah, but I really don't consider it as such as my notebooks are too dark and depressing. I don't write in them everyday and to me a proper journal would cover a wider range of my life than the dark reaches that my thoughts wander through. But yes I do know it's Journaling its just to me Journaling seems like a fun activity or hobby while for me its something I need. Journaling should be fun and contain multiple things. Mine is just me writing about my pain, sadness, anger, fears and other depressing things which is why I don't consider it Journaling (even if it is)

Journaling is therapeutic, no matter what you write. I try to remind myself to write one gratitude thought. I often forget, but bit by bit I will find something, anything, to be positive about. Like, "I'm so thankful for running water." "I like my homemade hot chocolate with espresso powder better than Starbucks and I saved $4." The smallest glimmer of silver lining can make a dark cloud less daunting. Edgar Allen Poe had dark thoughts and look what a writer he became!

Usually on Friday nights, I listen to my weekly recommended songs on Spotify to try to fijd a new favorite song, but realized I hadn't been doing that for several weeks. Also, I've avoided the longer KZread videos I usually like, because both would be keeping me from gaming (right before Rebirth, I'd been obsessively playing...then replaying FF XVI, lol). Finally, yesterday, I didn't touch Rebirth at all and made myself just listen to music and catch up on some videos from creators I enjoy. Sometimes id go a month or two without an entry. But I've managed to fill 20 notebooks of various sizes so far. And the past four years I have had the pleasure of discovering fountain pens! I love being able to look back and read the previous chapters of my life painful and sweet that lead me to where I am now. That, and I've noticed many of the problems I face today, I noticed 6 months or a year ago, yet simply didn't reflect back and make any changes.

I got into daily journaling -(which has been admittedly not so daily)- My favorite pens I use are the Frixion Ball Pilots because they're erasable and retractable ones that dry quickly, have a really gelly-like consistency, and are nice and vibrant. Then I use an Accu-Gel Highlighter Bible Hi-Glider for highlighting my dates to separate it from the rest of the writing. They're super gummy feeling and so they might not be for everyone, but they make so many pretty colors.

I love how real Stephanie's journals are, full of luscious colorful ink but just pure free-form writing. I'm not a sticker/stamp gal myself so I appreciate that some of us still write write write. And yes, I may have a ton of notebooks, but now I need to go on JetPens and look for a couple more with some enticing papers. Been journaling since I was in elementary school. I am doing Connie's tip the most right now. Sometimes life just gets in the way. Journaling should not be a chore or a daily task. I found that I wrote less and felt it to be a chore if I see empty pages on my journal which I feel guilty on because there is so much space. Especially when I got a dated journal for that year. That's where Stephanie's tip came to me during 2023. I literally wrote nothing for days until I decided that I can write about...anything really. Lyrics I liked for that week, a random top 5 list, or things I ate. Now my journal is just full of random things. 😊But they all make me happy to write it down.

That is amazing! I’ve been journaling since I was a little girl in 1998 ❤. It’s amazing! Congrats on your journaling! If I’ve got a tip it’s basically what you said, don’t force it but also enjoy some consistency. When things are hectic the journal can be the ONE place you have control over haha.

I am in my 10th of journaling in my 5 Year Journal. It's just enough for me to get down things for the day and perfect for when I want to look back on previous years. (I have a leather notebook where I journal on those days I need to clear my brain.) Both journals are perfect with my Lamy fountain pen ❤

I journal quite a bit. I started in 2021, and I use the Levenger Circa system because I like to write a new entry each year on the same day. I currently have a notebook for every two weeks, so that's about 300 pages/month. I tend to write between four and 12 pages per day. I have "ready use" pens every week from my collection of currently-inked pens. Today I am obsessed with the new Lamy Dark Lilac, which I have in an Endless Pens exclusive Opus 88 with a broad nib. Thanks for making these videos! I always look forward to your content!

I started journaling when I began studying Stoicism. I don’t think my journals are as valuable as Marcus Aurelius’ journals, but that got me started. In my journal I keep track of my meditation, breathing exercises and joya practice, also include there how my sleep quality has been, some important events of the day and things that make me fee grateful. I’m currently using some Rhodia notebook in A5 size, white paper, light gray dot grid; and fountain pens with scented inks from J. Herbin. In deed today I opened a brand new bottle of their violet ink and it smells so good. For fountain pens I shift between a Lammy Safari (medium width), a Kaweko Perkeo (the one in gray and pink) and a J. Herbin one that I love because it’s fully transparent and came with the refill system included.

Like Stephanie I go for the "any empty notebook" method of choosing what to journal in. It can often be something I've picked up as a bargain, or to try out that brand. It's fun to use lots of different ones and have a very mixed stack of filled ones by the end of the year. I'm also using a Twsbi Eco for it right now - but that's new to me. Just bought my first one this week.

My current journal habit is to doodle or jot down something about my day next to my daily schedule in my Hobonichi - how I'm feeling, a cool bird I saw, particularly noting down how my meds make me feel so I have something to look back at and talk with my doctors. So like, half of it is "miserable migraine" the other half is "omg the tree swallows are backkkk"

Since the daily spots are small i dont feel overwhelmed to do "serious" journaling, but if the mood strikes the opposite page from the daily spots is a full page grid so i could do something longer. Mine is a combo journal/commonplace book!

What I personally do to keep myself into journaling is to make every entry kinda like Editorial page. I love reading news and keeping up with current events and I being opinionated, instead of posting my thoughts on socmed that would prolly make me a target of harsh criticism and worst red tagging, I would write down everything instead in my Journal so that I would be able to lighten my brain from lots of thoughts without being persecuted as well for my opinion. Of course, if something is just the same every day, I would focus on other things such as music or movies etc.

Three to five times a week is probably a good idea. Find a pen you really like - I alternate between a couple Pilot Kakuno fountain pens, cartridge ink (easier is better for me) and some paper I won’t name because y’all don’t sell it. 😁 But good paper matters. For me it adds to the fun to throw in occasional stickers and washi tapes, and if I’m in the mood I do a single-page monthly title sort of thing. Whatever art supplies I’ve got laying around make that more fun, too.

Do you travel with a thick one-year diary or bring several sheets and stick them back to your diary? The situation with me is that I have only started my 5-year journal since 2024. There will be a trips overseas when I know I won't travel with this thick book. Your input is appreciated 🙂

Best advice that I can give you is that you are going to fuck up. And it feels horrible, but you learn to love what you do because of those fuck ups. First you are going to buy a pen, and then you are going to buy a notebook. Pen will cost you somewhere between 15 and 30 euros and notebook between 5 and 10 euros. I don't know how much that is in dollars so count it for yourself. Then you are going to start with writting. At first you are going to write about things, events and people and how they made you feel. Then you are going to see a pen that is little bit prettier than yours and a notebook that looks a little bit better than the one you currently use, and then you will buy them and leave your old notebook half empty so you could write in the new one, and you will leave your old pen so you could try the new one. You are going to stay in that pattern of behaviour for at least a couple of years repeating to yourself that this time you are going to finish the notebook you bought and that you just want to find the right pen for you, which you will find, after 15 pens and some 1000 euros later. And that pen will be Pilot custom 74 in F nib. Pilot metropolitan works as well and it is much cheaper. The only pens that it can't beat are Pilot more luxurious pens. That was my experience with pens so far.
