The Oldest Twin Lighthouses In America | America Over The Edge

2 kilometers above the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the size and scope of Massachusetts Bay can truly be appreciated. The waterway stretches from the cape and peninsula in the north, to Plymouth Harbor in the South and is home to millions of residents along 100km of stunning coast. Now closer to sea level and shore, the first sight greeting visitors at the entrance to Massachusetts Bay are the twin lighthouses of Thatcher Island. Constructed in 1771, they are the only operating twin lighthouses in America.

    Those were my Ancestors, Anthony and Elizabeth Thacher who shipwrecked there in 1635. The British government gave them the island for their tragedy of losing their 4 children, his nephew and that family along with the entire crew. They eventually settled in Marblehead
