The alternating magic thing sounds like there may be spell that you can use in the enemy's turn. Like a spell that you use in the movement phase to negatively impact their charge or something?

This was my thinking - I think it's defensive spells to counter what the enemy might be doing.

It's interesting to see that magic is spread out over all phases. Something that complex, will, definitely not get messed up. Ever. Other than that I have been going through my old 3rd edition army book and considering which army to expand first. Skaven or Dark Elf. This game has a lot to prove. Mostly that it is not the return of Hero Hammer. And seeing goblins on 25mm bases is also going to be interesting.

It seems this will ensure people forgetting to cast important spells without a dedicated magic phase. An improvement indeed. :)

GW have a tricky task to please the different groups of old fans who each have their favorite editions - for different reasons. But also these old fans who already have their armies aren't really the majority of customers that GW want, they are the least likely to buy new minis. But there has been a revival in interest in the old world from various video games, total war and the latest edition of WHFRP so a whole wave of younger hobbyists who are going to be curious about the old world and might actually buy a new army. I'm mostly hoping we just get a good enough ruleset for rank and flank combat that differentiates itself from GW's other games and that the reissuing of old OOP minis lowers the cost of entry.

Honestly, I like the changes. Drive back or whatever sounds like it'll add depth and the pre-turn phase should clear up the timing of abilities. Splitting up magic just makes sense.

Right!? I'm fine with all of it. Love the lore. Love the models. But playing 8th is a chore 😅

drive back could be interesting, as it allows units to break gaps in opponents lines and the like.

@@jervoise Getting a Bret cavalry unit into the flank of something that's protected is one of the uses I can see for that.

Looking forward to giving this ago, so I hope I get an early copy :D I liked the idea of large blocks of infantry, but it really should have been limited to hoard armies.

as silly as the end times were, the magic rules in it i always thought were a clear improvement on any of the other editions takes. i'd be genuinely happy if they just took the power dice generation from there to keep the whole winds of magic feel while making it more consistent.

As long as we can avoid the massive bomb spells from 8th I will be happy. There was a certain satisfaction of moving a sorceress on a dark pegasus to one end of a battle line and throwing a purple sun down it, but it was so game breaking it just be came unfun. Also bringing back guess ranges so cannons aren't snipers would be solid. It was a shame you couldn't really invest the points in these cool centerpiece models bc a cannon would just murder it and the rider and you would be out a ton of points turn 1. I am intrigued by these rules though. I will be dusting off the old Orcs & Goblins.

Let me be honest. As a person who still playes the old Fantasy Games with some friends of mine, the best part about the Old world is, it brings back Models for the old factions.

You missed the mention of "charge reactions" I think they will use something similar to heresy 2.0 reactions

So there were always charge reactions. Hold. Stand and Shoot. Flee. I daresay it'll just be those.
