The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders | Full Episode | Hometown Tragedy: A True-Crime Series | Very Local

The murders of Oklahoma Girl Scouts, Lori Farmer, Doris Denise Milner and Michele Guse, have haunted the community of Locust Grove and beyond for decades.
On June 12, 1977, Girl Scouts from Tulsa and surrounding areas arrived at Camp Scott in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. As the girls went to sleep for the night, a thunderstorm rolled through into the early hours the next morning. When counselor Carla Wilhite heard something in the middle of the night, she got up to investigate. She heard a guttural moaning sound coming from the main road through camp. After investigating, she determined it was probably just an animal so she returned to bed.
The next morning on her way to the shower house, Wilhite made a horrible discovery. This was the beginning of a nightmare that would last decades as investigators try to uncover clues about the atrocious crimes committed at Camp Scott.

They don’t deserve life in prison. True they are sick but what the hell do you think prison does? I did case work for inmates and families as release happened. I had more than one person tell me prison tight people one of two things, how to be alone and or how to be a better criminal. I don’t know what the answer is but even a life sentence is only 30 years for most and violent offenders have to meet 85% of their sentences and given that I know people who got locked up for robbery who got more than the average sexual offender, so chances are “life” is a lot less than you’d think. Gotta love our warped version of a justice system.

I was 16 that summer and doing my yearly visit with my grandparents in Missouri when we saw the news report about this case. To this day, all these years later, I still remember my grandmother putting her hand to her mouth and gasping and then her coffee cup hitting the tiled floor of the kitchen. Her reaction was so emotional and so unexpected that I have never forgotten it. She said "those poor baby girls" and she was crying. My mother was her only child and I think she was reacting the way she would have reacted if it had been her daughter, and not someone else's, who had been murdered so brutally.

Totally agree with you. Hart's 1966 case was a strange one. The two women were 18 and 19. One was 4 months pregnant with her first child and recently married. The other was recently divorced and 6 months pregnant with her second child (neither were showing according to the 19 year old who testified during the pre-trial hearing). They were out at a BYOB singles club drinking alcohol. The evidence against Hart was weak and considering it was 1966 in the bible belt, a jury was likely to not sympathize with the victims (sadly). So, I'm certain all of that played into the weak sentencing Hart received in his plea deal as well as his parole 28 months later.

I assure you that two pregnant women (one married and 4 months pregnant the other recently divorced and pregnant with her 2nd child at age 19) who were both out drinking alcohol at a singles bar would bode well in front of an Oklahoman jury. It certainly played a huge part in Hart only receiving a slap on the wrist for his crime (considering he was out on parole after only serving 28 months). He was also only convicted of SAing one of the two women as well.

If people who have been wrongfully convicted can sue and get money there needs to be some way for the public to sue the courts and the jails for this kind of malfeasance. Anyone court that will release a man who kidnapped and raped two pregnant woman needs to be held responsible. How does a jail have a man escape not once but twice and not transfer him to a higher security prison? This in my opinion is 100% incompetence of law enforcement and a complete perversion of the justice system, they kept the trial in the offenders home location causing bias, the offender fled custody twice prior and there was no consideration for his prior offenses when being classified as an in-custody inmate, and lastly the crime scene was trampled on. If the OSBI and the state of OK has any decency, they would exume Harts remains and test further DNA, if his families wont allow, time to go the genealogy route with GED Match. As a 38 year old Father of 2 girls, this case pisses me off. Its absurd how this was handled and it needs to be vindicated as such.

Finding out that he was aquitted was heart wrenching for me, but i don't think i can fully imagine how devastating it was for the families & everyone involved with prosecuting him. Hearing Lori's mom tell about going to her graveside after getting the verdict & confessing to Lori that she failed her broke my heart even more. The poor parents of all 3 girls. Knowing that he died so soon after & so didn't get to enjoy the aquittal is a small comfort.

Our church changed lakes to take the youth to because of the Girl Scout Murders. Leroy Hart was Native American something I'm glad was not brought up in this short documentary. Folks said that the police were "racist" looking for an escape goat. Mr. Hart was seen as the "victim" ....not those three innocent girls....despite his history. It's almost unfathomable how some said he "only" raped those two pregnant women....but didn't kill them. Infact his funeral was widely attended. I hope those that felt sorry for this murdering child rapist... feel guilt & shame for supporting him. Being a mother of two girls (now grown women) my heart goes out to Mrs. Farmer. I just watched this video again and even though it's been 45 years, I'm astonished over the strength of Mrs. Farmer. I cried like a little girl when my dog died. Yet somehow this woman is able to carry on. Our judicial system isn't perfect but it's the best our world has to offer. Just learning about this case a few months ago, I wasn't on the jury to hear all the details but... The little bit I do know is there was a mountain of circumstantial evidence against Mr. Hart, yet he was acquitted of all charges. There must be good reason for that. Logic suggests the likelihood of more than one attacker. As such, the case can't be closed until every detail is known.

There’s just too much that adds up against him. I think that the fingerprint and the other evidence that was found was that of his accomplice. I also think that anyone who ever went to defend this man after what he did to those pregnant women How about as evil as he is and flat out stupid. It looked like a place waiting for something bad to happen. Karla Wilhite heard weird noises outside and didn't do a headcount of the kids? If I have kids around I want to know how they are and where they are at all times. Especially in a camp setting. I had family around Locust Grove. They heard the same thing, Hart wouldn't do that to kids. Seems like he did if you ask me. If I remember right there was a reward for bringing Hart in if you could find him. Also he had been in contact with AIM. And he faced 305 years in prison regardless of the court outcome. I wish for healing of the families. Sad beyond belief.
