The Okinawa's Spirituality, Noro: Talk to the god of the Ryukyu

The term "Noro" refers to a female shaman or priestess in Okinawan culture, who plays a significant role in religious and community life. The Noro's primary responsibilities include conducting rituals and ceremonies to pray for bountiful harvests, ward off disasters, welcome ancestors, and celebrate prosperity.
The Noro system was formalised in the 15th century during the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was part of a larger religious and political structure to unify and centralise the kingdom. The highest-ranking Noro was known as "Kikoe Ōgimi, who was responsible for overseeing all religious activities and other Noro across the Ryukyu Islands. This structure remained influential until the annexation of the Ryukyu Kingdom by Japan in the late 19th century, which led to the decline of the Noro's official status.
Noros are traditionally part of a hereditary system, where the position is passed down through specific family lines known as "Noro Dunchi". They are considered intermediaries between the gods and the people, often performing large-scale rituals that involve invoking the presence of deities to ensure the well-being of their communities. Unlike other religious figures, Noros do not follow strict religious doctrines or preach specific teachings. Instead, their role is deeply rooted in animism and the worship of nature spirits, particularly those from the sacred realm of Nirai Kanai, a mythical place believed to be the origin of life and blessings.
In Okinawan culture, there is another type of shaman known as "Yuta." While both Noros and Yutas serve spiritual functions, their roles and practices differ significantly. Noros are more focused on formal, community-wide rituals and are part of a structured, hereditary system. In contrast, Yutas are often independent practitioners who provide personal spiritual guidance and perform rituals related to daily life events, such as funerals and ancestor worship. Yutas are known for their ability to communicate with ancestral spirits and provide divination services

Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been curious to learn more about Noro. Since the hierarchy of Noro priestesses appointed by the kingdom ceased to exist after the fall of the kingdom, I wondered how it was that people were still validly Noro. Who is allowed to act as, or say they are, a Noro, and who appoints them or recognizes them. ...
