Before everyone loses their mind in Buffalo over this, MacLeod is a good third line center and an excellent penalty killer. He will definitely improve your pk and won't do stupid things 5 on 5 that will cause goals against often. His speed also keeps other teams on their heels. Like McDavid fast. He was buried in a deep oiler lineup and is only 24. Just wait and see before you get too upset.

THG nailed it. Buffalo, is speeding up. McLeod is going to have twice the opportunity in Buffalo that he did in Edmonton. It's too early to call winners and losers on this trade. Savoie is a prospect, and nothing more right now. Size matters, and it's yet to be seen whether he can transition to the NHL. Not all guys his size can. In fact, most can't. McLeod isn't going to be a franchise player in Buffalo or anything, but I think Buffalo fans will realize why he was so well liked in Edmonton, in short order. He's a heart player, who is a bit streaky, but he flies up and down the ice, something Buffalo has been sorely missing.

Buffalo season ticket holder here. All the Sabres social media is saying this is a bad trade. I'm not convinced it might be good for both teams. Buffalo has one of if not the best prospect pools in the NHL and all those prospects can not play for the Sabres not to mention he wasn't our best prospect. The other thing is Mcleod is one of the fastest skaters in the league and fits with Ruffs philosophy of being a fast team. He also was ( I believe) the best faceoff man for Edmonton 50.1 percent and that's something we lack. Oiler fans will love Savoie he is a likeable guy and he is very good playmaker.

Fair take. I think Jackson did well and he took advantage of Adams' desperation when other GMs refused to. Good for him and the oil. Having said that Adams did what he needed to do. He traded from an area of strength and filled a hole that would have held us back. McLeod helps us us at 3c this year, is good defensively, is fast as hell like most of our bottom 6, good at faceoffs, and is strong pk'er. Hes going to help us win now and for the future.

Great trade for both teams. Sabres (see: Ruff) are starving for solid depth forwards like McLeod, and have a plethora of highly skilled but unproven forwards like Savoie. Obviously Matt has the higher ceiling, but he hasn't shown much to the effect of translating his game to the next level. The CHL rules have hurt his development in my opinion, and there is no better place for him to blossom than in Edmonton. I find it amusing that people think Buffalo got the short end of the stick with this trade. Savoie is 5'9" and hasn't proven himself in the NHL yet. You don't give away high-end draft picks unless there's something about the player that concerns you. If this was a salary cap move, then it makes sense, but McLeod is 6'3" and a proven NHL player. I understand why Buffalo made this trade.

Ok I’ve looked at the surrounding context of the trade and Buffalo has a lot of players that meet the Savoie archetype. And Mcloud is young enough to prove he is a 20G-60ishP player every year while locking down that third line and PK. And Buffalo is trading from a position of strength for a position of weakness. But I am also tired of seeing Buffalo lose trades all the time.
