The Ogiek Story: Community-led conservation in Mount Elgon, Kenya
The twice-evicted Ogiek Peoples of Mount Elgon, Kenya are fighting for their rights to live on and preserve their ancestral lands.
In collaboration with the Chepkitale Indigenous Peoples’ Development Project, RRI organized a visit to shine light on the transformative role of the Ogiek's community-led conservation in protecting the biodiversity-rich forests of Mt. Elgon. Beautiful images and inspiring language, but this would be more powerful if the story of the community was told more clearly. What about the Ogiek community based approach is "transformative?" What is the status of their struggle to live on and protect their lands? I was ultimately disappointed.

Indiginous communities are a key to conservation. They must all be included and more than that they ARE the solution. They are the futere. Get the big Western hunting lobbyest out of politics and everything will be successful. Political corruption and and hunting lobbyest are the main and problem

Problem is when the indigenous communities adapt modern lifestyles complete with modern healthcare, education and capitalist sophistry, then new dynamics kick in I guess 🤔
