'absurd' moments like the rpg and 360 no scope are literally what make Metal Gear so great. absurdity is the fundamental thread of this series. embracing absurdity is the key to life. people that play mgs2 and don't see how twin snakes adopted the same style of 'camp' are just blinded by the fear of a good time.

I kind of like the idea that Snake doesn't have to floor it to crazy town when everyone he's up against is already there, feels more in line with his character. He never had the odds on his side and he never needed them. Other people can be ninjas and vampires and whatever else, Solid Snake is just a guy with a lot of training and a good heart and that's why he wins. He's a classic hero. I can see why someone whose favorite MG game is Rising would prefer TTS though. That's not meant to be insulting, I'm just saying I can see the connection

@@KingLich451 that's explained in MGSV by the hypnotic suggestion by someone (they never actually explained WHO did that) that turned Venom into Venom. He believes he met Volgin, he didn't ACTUALLY, but he believes he did. A better question is: Why did a US MILITARY SPECIAL FORCES UNIT hire a 61 year old RUSSIAN SPAGHETTI WESTERN FAN, AND GIVE HIM SOME OF THE MOST OUTDATED HANDGUNS FOR MODERN-ish BATTLES?

Oh man this video needs to be spread around. I love how you explained all this. MGS2, MGS Twin Snakes, and Revengance are my 3 favorite mgs games.

Finally, a space where I can speak openly about my love for The Twin Snakes. I have not had access to a copy of TTS in fifteen, probably closer to twenty years but do I remember it oh so fondly. Sure it's over the top but it has it's own charm to it while keeping the spirit of the original. And plus, I had both TTS and the original on the PSone at the same time. Instead of getting hung up over which one was "better" I would play one from start to finish. Then I would play the other. That was a good year.

I genuinely believe there's a subsect of fans who got into the series through TTS, but don't want to admit it. Anyone who likes MGS1s controls over MGS2's is on some GOOD drugs, which is why I loved TTS, it's MGS1 with MGS2's controls.

No way Portable Ops isn't cannon, it's mentioned at the beginning of Peace Walker and fits in the Timeline without contradicting too much. All metal gear games have continuity issues but it's not like PO is any worse then the others

There's also a cassette in The Phantom Pain where Ocelot reminds Venom that he personally killed the remaining philosophers to secure the full legacy so that Zero could found Cipher/The Patriots with the goal of fulfilling the Boss' Will. We see him do exactly that at the end of Portable Ops.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a rumor that they had sound issues when recording lines. It's been said numerous times by the voice actors themselves that they filmed in a house near a highway and they had the time they had crap equipment so they had to go and mess with the audio more than they should have to clear up any residual noise.

And whatever the engineer did worked out great. They could've easily used that audio in MGS4. But they also couldn't because of the accent issue.

In terms of my opinion as a mid-generational fan: I grew up with twin snakes and never played the original so for me personally, it's the definitive version of MGS1. I haven't played it in years so my opinion might change, but I'd rather play it over the original any day. I'm also a big fan of portable ops so I really enjoy it when people solidify that the game had some stuff in it that matters and is canon despite the misinformation. I also liked the gameplay of revengence as a platinum fan but even though I thought the story was a little too crazy/hammy for my liking (even compared to other MGS stuff) I didn't reject it as non-canon.

I played MG Rising years ago and haven’t thought about it in ages. After watching your video I’m gonna have to dig it out and give it another smash. Thanks for reminding me about it 👍👍

Yeah MGSV definitely tried the most new stuff with a good team behind it couldve been marvelous. We got a prequel for Liquid Snake, and Psycho Mantis. A Metal Gear Rex boss fight, and a new antagonist. It really tried so much and it was just puddle deep unfortunately.

So here's an interesting theory - Ghost Babel is canon but it's Liquid pretending to be Solid in order to get important names/information/inspiration for the later Shadow Moses incident. Either play or watch through the game yourself (it's about 5hrs) and keep that thought in mind, it doesn't fit perfectly but it does fit well enough to be an Ocelot level misdirection wrapped in a government cover up. The two canon problems (assuming that Liquid was impersonating Solid) are the Colonel and Mei Ling, the Colonel is deep enough into the scheme to feign ignorance to carry the cover up and perhaps Mei Ling's reward for not letting her previous involvement slip during MGS1 was her promotion as seen in MGS4, Weasel could also be Decoy Octopus but perhaps that's a stretch. The wording of Snakes monologue in the end sequence kind of works for what came to follow...

I happily tell my friends the story or “lore” of MGS. While it is confusing, I try my best to give them story without spoiling the series with all the story, it honestly sounds like I need to be antipsychotics but I’m so passionate about the series I geek out.

I think the only reason why people hate the twin snakes is because it lacks the Encounter Theme.

Twin Snakes I consider as canon…. Under the condition that “it’s how Otacon told the story to Sunny one day”

Metal Gear Rising not being stealthy is pretty simple. Its not a Metal Gear Solid game so you dont play as Snake (or a guy roleplaying as him). Its a new character with their own style.

Actually... I clicked on the video because of the thumbnail. The image of Solid Snake looks the way I would imagine he would look if MGS for the PS1 had modern graphics. Would have also loved to see a Remake of MGS1 with that type of artistic graphics, instead of modern realistic graphics.

My head canon think it’s Kaz not Campbell who snake rescues and befriends in portable ops.

Now that I think about it, Ocelot's revolver falling out of his left hand and Otacon tripping in the snow are details one could omit in a VR recreation This video makes me feel about TTS the same way Raiden feels about Armstrong's ideology at the end of MGR Still, outside of canon stuff TTS has that thing of not adapting MGS1 properly to MGS2's gameplay and that's a shame regardless of everything else

The same happens to me with TTS. There are still things a bit too over the top for my taste but thinking of it as the real thing and seeing MGS1 as the VR recreation makes sense in the way that those details about Ocelot and Otacon are believable as human mistakes but trivial for a military training excercise, therefore not worthy of recreating in a VR mission. Also, from a gameplay standpoint, it also makes sense that Snake takes advantage of the stuff you can do in TTS but not in MGS1 despite it beeaking the game. Guess I'll have to start playing the Gamecube version again

@@Denkersis I still don't get what you mean by "breaking the game." It's not even possible to play MGS1 at a competitive level. The gameplay's too simplistic. Memorizing patrol routes doesn't take a lot of skill.

I don’t understand how “Metal Gear Rising is a good game” is a hot take, that should be the coldest mf take there is. For even the most basic standpoint that game is a technical masterpiece and one of if not the most uniquely played hack n slash games ever made. Besides, if we’re being realistic here, the stage has been pretty comfortably set for MGR 2 considering the state of the mainline games, and the absolute *explosion* of praise and support for MGR in the last few years, it would be the safest jumping off point. If it would be more metal gear solid or metal gear rising I couldn’t say, though honestly I would prefer something in between the two sides myself, though I will admit I just want some more of MGSV’s ultra tasty controls and gunplay. Regardless, good video man, glad I stumbled on this channel, I’m subbed.

I like to think portable ops is canon as it was the first mgs game I played and what got me into the franchise for real as I had a psp at the time. Brilliant game. The mechanics at the time for me were ground breaking. Also funny cuz I’ve only played as big boss/venom side of the story…never solid snake

Im so mad at myself for not keeping my copy of Twin Snakes. Im gonna have to dish out some dough. Unless get lucky and Nintendo does a re release but its very unlikely.

Nontindon't can go to hell. Even if they re-released it, I wouldn't give them one red cent. I play Twin Snakes on the Dolphin emulator. Higher resolution, smoother framerate, and it's free as a bird.

Yea lets ignore that in mgs4 that the flash backs lead to cutscenes from mgs1 mhm didnt hapen twin snakes is more canon because also you couldnt crouch in the original metal gear solid while holding a sniper and snakes tells you that you can in mgs2 wow what wonderfull evidence

I was trying to figure out what game to start with, and for some reason just didn’t understand if I was supposed to start with Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid. Anyways, a month later I’ve played through MGS 1 and 2 and can safely say it’s way easier to understand than Kingdom Hearts lol

Ask them if they have a secret menu. Seriously. Ended up in the hospital for a month and was barely eating, until I found out you didn't have to eat what they were serving. One Hospital had good pizza and the other had good tacos. And ask for more dilaudid/morphine too. Hope you heal up soon.

You mentioned that you would wipe the slate clean, which I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but would you include MGS3 with that? I think mgs3 needs a remake that better outlines the relationship between the boss and snake

@@AfterlifeGames I definitely enjoy mgs2 and especially 3 I’d love to see a video of why you think everything else should be wiped clean after mgs1 and your personal opinion on the direction the series should’ve gone In my opinion the game series should be rebooted from the beginning with the first metal gear to fallow the same story but unfolded and reworked to better represent the overall narrative connecting everything neatly instead of the continuity mess mgs is known for MGS3 was my first metal gear game and it’s my favorite I’m the series I can’t imagine a Continuity without it but I can agree that I would appreciate a more cohesive version of events

The parts that can't really be canon of portable ops are the appearances of various guest characters Like Raiden & old snake simply because they're out of time The main story absolutely is Canon

Love your content :D, thanks for showcasing and disproving the «arguments » that people like to chuck at anyone who dares suggest that, for instance, a metal gear game that isn’t stealth focused could still conceivably be canon because it hasn’t been contradicted by any other metal gear game

Portable ops was my entry into the franchise

One day I am going to put together a reel of all the stealth possibilities in Rising. I keep hoping for that mythical PS4 re-release because I'm pretty sure this PC will explode if I try to play anything more intensive than a PSP game on it.

I think that this video is the first place that I've ever heard the Kojimeister speak.

The AC!D games are canon. I just love the series as a whole. Konami making any actual new games would be pretty surreal at this point.

I'd say once you understand mgs4, most of the threads are tracked and tied. You still get a feeling of missing a thing or two, but those are on Big Boss side of the story (a very secretive story, by the way). When you finish V, I strongly recommend playing 4 again, immediately. It will blow your mind.

What a thrill

I've been a fan of metal gear since I was 9 that was 20 years ago, with that being said Ive enjoyed every game even survive. The story was actually good. And given the limitless capacity of the mgs universe they could very well all be cannon

For Twin Snakes my headcanon is that it's a retelling of mgs1 from Otacon. As for portable ops I'll always defend its canon status and bring up how it was shown in mgs4 timeline of games when encountering Eva.

If Portable Ops is Canon, Big Boss would have the Money GENE gave him in order to build MSF, yet, at the start of Peace Walker, they were broke Nomads who could barely afford to kept fed, which is why taking the job for Zadornov sounded so lucrative to Kaz before Snake had even heard the tape. Therefore, if Portable Ops is canon, where's that money? Where are the references to it? There are references to every other canon entry at the time in it, why not Portable ops? Oh wait, there was one. Where Kaz called it Crap. The only mention to the Portable Ops in another game and they call it crap. If that screams canon to you, i've got some land in Florida to sell you.

Interestingly, even though I said TTS is my preferred way to play MGS1, the original game stayed on my top 10 for a while, just because of the nostalgia factor.

2:21 There's also a poster for Ghost Babel in MGS2. So I'd say the issue isn't just whether it's canon or not, but also why Ghost Babel got turned into a videogame in the story itself. It's basically a VR simulation of the events in Ghost Babel that you see in MGS2, which is a VR simulation itself. 8:06 I don't think that all stories continuing the one from Portable Ops would be non-canon if PO isn't canon. It would just be that PW has strange holes in its plot. But the real problem of PO is that it sucks and that no one played it. 9:45 There's actually a theory that GZ is the altered memories that Venom got fed or something like that. Anyway, I don't get the point of this video. Like you said at 19:39, there are hardly reasons why a game isn't canon, except maybe the twin snakes because of the voice acting in MGS4, but characters' voices aren't part of the story, I think. So really, everything is canon.

I think Ghost Babel is canon. The 5-7 in mgs4 mentions that snake used it in Operation Ghost Babel. I am 100% in favor of wiping everything after MGS1. I prefer the original because of the music and tone. But I'd recommend Twin Snakes to newer players over 1 because its much better to play.

Yeah. Twin Snakes is alright. It's not the steaming pile of trash the internet makes. It's not as good as the original. But that doesn't make it a bad game. Only issue is the MGS2 play style. More specifically the FPS mode nerfs the game's balance. Not enough of the areas were reworked around it. Even when you play on higher difficulties, it's still a bit too easy. Enemies AI is better than the original. But that's not enough to even the challenge of the original. It's also a huge flaw that unlike the original MGS, you start out with a fully maxed out health pool instead of the small health pool that gradually gets bigger after each boss. This is a subjective critique. But this is my opinion. You can agree or disagree.

Strongly disagree. To anybody playing MGS1 for the balance or the difficulty, here's some advice: Play more games. There's a cavalcade of amazing interactive experiences out there. Time to broaden your horizons. Even on Extreme, none of the MGS games are challenging. Every single one is a walk in the park.

@@AfterlifeGames Glad for you dropping in. But they are hard for first timers. The more you play them on hard or extreme, the easier they become. But it's not always the case for every MGS game. The earlier games sure. But the new ones. Specifically MGSV TPP, it always changes the enemy placements. Also they adjust to your play style every time you replay a mission. Chapter 2 has Missions you previously completed on chapter 1 that it acts like you're playing them for the first time. They add something like the rescuing a doctor only triggering an alert or getting spotted equals a game over or That Tank convoy mission where you go in without any weapons or no reflex mode. This adds a different layer of challenge. You're like I'm used to playing this way. But you're going to have to adjust to a different play style. Now this doesn't create a level of challenge or difficulty. You just have to adapt to new strats. Become inventive and find other ways of play style. With that said though, it's not like the earlier games where the patrols are the same and you can get through them without getting spotted. Even with Radar disabled on higher difficulties. The challenge isn't what I played MGS for. But it does add a dynamic layer of replayability. Like most people, I played it for the story. Same does apply for games like The Last of us. I played that for the story. But it didn't stop me from playing it on Grounded mode. That's just how much I love that game. I'm not too excited for The Last of us remake though. It runs off the sequels engine and has all the accessibility options. But it looks like a beat for beat remake. It looks more like a remaster than a built from the ground remake. Maybe I'm being subjective or baised. But it's nice you replied Dead Vector.

@@douglasmonroe7417 More like an alternate sequel of MG2 from MSX where you return to what was long ago Outer Heaven. It doesn't really fits in the chronology, but doesn't matter because is a good game.

Portable ops is CANON

I have always viewed Portable Ops, Revengeance and Survive as soft canon. Everything in these games is canon as long as it isn't contradicted by a canon game. Example: in PO there is a metal gear but in PW Metal Gear Zeke is considered and presented as the first Metal Gear so the metal gear from PO isn't canon, but something like Big Boss getting the money that he will eventually use to fund his armys is never been contradicted by a future games so it's canon.

ZEKE was never presented as the first Metal Gear. Granin developed the plans for the first Metal Gear in MGS3, which were recovered by Ocelot and given to the director of the CIA. So Metal Gear RAXA from MPO was indeed the first one.

Ok, but still in PW story it feels like they really want you to believe that Zeke is the first Metal Gear without telling you directly. But anyways the only thing in PO that I just can't accept as canon is Frank Jaeger and more specifically his backstory. In PO it was presented that Big Boss first meet him in Mozambique were he saved him from being a child soldier, but MG2 Gray Fox mentioned that the first time he meet Big Boss was when he saved him from a labor camp in Vietnam. And ok if everything about Frank Jaeger in PO is canon then is the part about Vietnam canon.

​@@hall1009 ZEKE was never presented as the first Metal Gear. No idea where you got that. You're absolutely right about the descrepancy with Frank Jaeger's origin, though. The series is full of those. So you can either treat it as another retcon, or if you want some headcanon to make it work: Null had to have his memories of being the perfect soldier erased as part of his rehabilitation. So the story he tells in MG2 was due to the fact that he had no memory of meeting Big Boss the first two times.

​@@nikokrol7773 Metal Gear RAXA from MPO was the first Metal Gear, built by Sokolov, based on Granin's plans. ZEKE was just the first bipedal walking tank. Since you like the wiki so much, go check it again. You'll see that FOXHOUND was founded in 1971, right after the San Hieronymo Incident. This is confirmed by the timeline before the credits in MGS3. Gray Fox meeting Big Boss in the Mizambican Civil War was established in MG2. But MPO came out after MG2, so it overwrites those events. Just like MGS3 changed Big Boss from a WWII hero to a Cold War hero, MPO changed Gray Fox and Big Boss's first meeting. Which is way less of a retcon than changing Big Boss's age. In conclusion: *YOU GET... **_NOTHING!_** YOU **_LOSE!_*

The original mgr would've been amazing, bridging mgs2 and mgs4, makes more sense than mgrr to me. Would've been exciting.

Survive is Canon. And is good. Thank you for being at least reasonable on that front

@@AfterlifeGames Not meaning to twist your words. Survive gets a way worse rep than it deserves and your channel might be the only one I've heard mention Survive and not immediately dump on it.

I don't have strong opinions about MGS1 VS Twin Snakes Canonicity, but they can't both be cannon right? Is it a sort of case like, "the things they have in common are cannon, and the differences are irrelevant"? Also, I remember in MGS4 there's a slideshow cutscene with Naomi that shows metal gear games on a ps3, it shows MGS1, and portable ops, but not the twin snakes. That's why I lean towards MGS1 being the canon version of those events, and PO being canon also.

@@AfterlifeGames Just wanted clarification, because they have some differing details, only minor but they exist. It was hard to tell for a moment there how much you were joking 😂 In MGS4, Snake says to Otacon in a codec call that he took out the tank with grenades, which you do in MGS1, but in Twin Snakes you can just tranq headshot the gunner. Things like that. So, I'm still not convinced they're both canon, but your video was great! Pretty funny at times too. Its been fun watching all your metal gear videos

Well fuck me, I never expected to find someone who agrees with me on Portable Ops, but here we are. Also Ghost Babel is fantastic and anyone who skipped it because "lol Gameboy for children" missed out on what is easily one of the best games on the platform.

Ghost Babel might be one of the best GBC games, but it's a terrible game overall. The second half is nothing but padding to extend the length, full of backtracking and confusing puzzles. I regret having _not_ skipped it.

Portable Ops is canon…it was also referred to in MGS4 during the big mama speech…..PS, to the video maker, in the words of Big Boss “you’re pretty good” he said it before ocelot, Fight me to the death haters
