I introduced my English teacher to Epic when we started our Odyssey section (she loved it and I bought a physical copy of The Odyssey to read all of it since we skipped over parts in our class reading). Our final project was to make a Wanted poster for an antagonist in The Odyssey (or Odysseus if we wanted to). That included drawing the character, writing down specific character traits that they are mentioned to have and then writing a paragraph as to why they’re important to The Odyssey. I chose Poseidon. Y’know the guy that didn’t show up at all and is only mentioned in the parts we read. My paragraph on why He was important was more of me trying to convince myself that he was even a character at all. I got a good grade on that project, but I don’t recommend copying my example.

@@danitini14 yeah, my argument was ‘well Polyphemus calls for Poseidon to do all this bad shit to Odysseus and guess what happens? The same bad shit Polyphemus asks for-so Poseidon was clearly listening and therefore he is a character. Please do not make me redo this assignment I spent most of my time drawing Poseidon and cannot afford to get a bad grade on this.’ I wish I had taken a picture of the paragraph I made, like I did the drawing of Poseidon, because it genuinely makes me laugh at how stubborn I was to make him a character just because he was in Epic and I for some reason just had to have that connection between both of my, then very intense, interests.

When we studied The Odyssey in high school, I felt like such a boss because I was the only one who finished reading it. So, to study it, our teacher assigned an island or stop or saga for each of us. And we did a presentation on it for the whole class. I got assigned Polyphemus so that was fun. Anyway, because we didn't have enough students in class with how our teacher divided the topics, the presentations never reached Ithaca, I think. Or at least it never reached Odysseus returning to the castle. Fast forward to the end of the Odyssey, our teacher took over presenting the final topics and when she asked what the final challenge Penelope posed for Odysseus to prove that he was in fact Odysseus, I kid you not, no one raised their hands. I knew the answer, so I slowly raised my hand. Teacher saw and she did acknowledge me, but she wanted to check one more if anyone else had finished the Odyssey. She even gave a clue that the final test involved a bed and, predictably, several giggles broke out. When she finally called me to share what happened in the end, I felt like such a boss. Long story short, read the Odyssey. It's Epic.

There’s a MYTHOLOGY CLASS
The musical definitely helps humanize the characters and definitely makes it feel more personal
@danitini14

In fairness Poseidon does have an effect on the story, even if he never shows up "on stage" so to speak. I think that's a rather clever choice of antagonists 🙂

I actually had my Odyssey unit right when I discovered Epic, the Ocean Saga was announced whilst I was reading through it. Because of Epic I was so hyped that whole unit!
I definitely could see at least a couple English and Mythology teachers having multiple choices tests with the Epic version as an answer just to see who actually read it and who only listened to Epic
It's Epic.
Hamilton moment, so many confused History teachers, it's the English teachers time now
I love that Jorge advises us to not take EPIC word for word (or rather, song for song) as material for Homer's the Odyssey, like he's so worried abt us failing school cuz we were too busy listening to this mythological musical (it's a bop ngl, go stream EPIC✨) that he created to even read the source material-😅🙏🏽✨ Also that "I want you to succeed!-🥹" at the end really shows us just how wholesome this dude is-🥹🙏🏽✨ Love your vibes and this musical, Jay, can't wait till the Thunder Saga releases!~ 🙏🏽🌩️✨
This is so oddly specific 😂 I'm dying of laughter
My English teacher asked us while discussing Machiavelli "What qualities make a good leader?" and without missing a beat, I raised my hand and said "a capacity for Ruthlessness since it is mercy upon yourself and your people" and that was my basis and stance in essays for the rest of the quarter lmao
Jay's laugh and smile make me feel totally better!! 😂❤
i wrote about you and epic in my general paper final, and i very much already used epic on my odyssey test. it actually helped me remembering some of the characters and the gods lol. thank you for making this masterpiece!!!!!
I love how you take creative liberties in epic but ones that impact the story in a positive way rather than just for plot convenience❤❤❤
As a student required to read the odyssey for school, I will take this into account, thank you.
I absolutely love EPIC and it has allowed me to create my own stories from your songs and adapt them to different worlds and characters and it’s amazing!
A very important message lol, Epic is certainly quite different from The Odyssey (especially in the motivations of characters) and both are awesome.
The original poem is actually so amazing, but I started rereading recently and EPIC just starts playing in my head as the background to each section, and it's actually epic! (Get it get it?) Anyway, I think it's awesome how you created a backing track for the poem in my head, but I am guilty of stopping in the middle of the poem to just vibe to the EPIC music in my head. 😅
Literally as we speak, I’ve been trying to get my English teacher into EPIC. Hasn’t happened yet, but either way I’m going to keep recommending others to listen to Epic: The Musical because honestly it’s amazing 🤩
I had a kid use your musical for a full presentation on the Odyssey and was surprised me and the teacher kept calling him out on how off he was, keep your interests separate and always find reliable sources people, we literally had a 2 month lesson on reliable sources before that, love you as always Jorge
Genuinely guys, read it! I am Greek and it was part of our curriculum in 5th or 6th grade (can't remember which anymore), and it was nearly everyone's favourite class. It is a mix between a tragedy and a fantasy novel, and it's got something for everyone: it's got romance, it's got adventure, it's got drama, it's got a badass trickster protagonist with trauma. Do yourselves a favour and give it a chance!
Don't worry, I didn't use Epic as study material for the Odessy... I used Percy Jackson
I graduated highschool 6 years ago now, but I loved the musical so much that I shared it with my old literature teacher (cause she is amazing and the class we learned the Odyssey in), and now she is playing your music for them in class!
Using EPIC as a cheat code from reading the Odyssey is hilarious😂😂😂 (I did that for my TSI English Class)
As an encouraging thought, my mother in law taught highschool English for years and she said that it's obvious you did your research for this musical. She also loves Epic.
As a former English teacher: yes. Students don't often realize there is a difference between adaptations and source material. Adaptations are great companions, not so great as primary sources
Love this, I remember when we were reading the Odyssey, my class felt so bad for Penelope, because she’s waiting for Odysseus for years and staying faithful to him, and he cheats on her twice. I appreciate you changing that for Epic, but it’s always made me wonder if Odysseus felt bad for doing that in the original text. Anyways kiddos read the Odyssey, it’s a good read!
Well warned. I noticed when looking up stuff to learn more. I do appreciate some of the changes you've made. You tell this story well Jay.
I read the Odyssey and I agree, it’s good!! I used Epic to get a better understanding of the plot, but reading the Odyssey made sure I knew what actually happened 👌
If epic were thing back when I was an English teacher, I absolutely would've incorporated into my lessons for the odyssey somehow.
“I want you to succeed!” That’s lowkey wholesome and motivating 😂🫶🏻

Though it may not be accurate, this musical is so good and makes me feel like I at least know a few really cool songs about what we're learning ❤😊
"Do we even need to talk about the ending of the Circe Saga?" 🤣🤣🤣 Another prime example why you should also read the book for your test. Also just read the book even if you aren't in school. Its great!

I passed that test with 100%+100% on bonus questions with a note that said "you truly are a Warrior of the mind".
I actually read the original novel (well the translation) because I was loving the songs from Epic. Best decision ever. The Odyssey is now one of my favorite books ever. So I must thank you for getting me to read such a masterpiece. I also wanted to tell you that your musical is a masterpiece that really captures the spirit of the original. Okay, but hear me out, it would have been REALLY funny if Poseidon waxed philosophical at Odysseus in the most melodramatic way possible in the actual Odyssey.
We love you yapping about things. :) EPIC is actually what got me into greek mythology and into wanting to read the Iliad and the Odyssey. I was shocked when I found out that certain events were *completely* different from EPIC, though. 😅 Hope you have a nice day!
honestly i never expected the musical to match up 1:1 with the actual events, especially with the 558 easter egg, and the year on circe's island being mostly skipped over. but i also found that a fair bit of it does incorporate elements well. like how polyphemes shows the "nobody" strategy, or how there are other ways aludes to the SA without being explicit. or gives genuinely great and meaningful addons and explanations the oddessy doesn't give. like how "my goodbye" explains why athena didn't help out in the story until later on, and how "warrior of the mind" explains how athena and odysseus met and why athena should care
May the gods protect this sweet kind man
Actually, I made a reference to Epic in my essay about the Odyssey. And I came with an A (well, actually in Mexico is a 10). ^-^ And yes, I already read the book, and I'll do it again. ^-^ Thanks for your work. Keep going.

this is sooo real lol. while i did listen to epic first, reading the story after (for school) definitely was fun because i did recognize where they were different and the same! it definitely gave me more of a love for both!! and i love how you’re pointing this out 😭

Really appreciate that you made this video and said this, yes the odyssey and EPIC are different, and that's part of the fun 😊 If you're looking for a crash course reference of the odyssey, I recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions odyssey summarized. It's short, sweet, and fun
We're actually studying the Odyssey right now! The other day,the teacher wanted to verify that everyone has read the material,so she was asking us one by one about certain parts. I had to explain the part with the Cyclops,(Yeah,I checked out the material just in case,so I didn't mention the winions and all that stuff.)It was super easy and fun,and I started talking about Odysseus, his plan, his mistake and the impact in the story. I got a bit excited and I even started mimicking Odysseus revealing his name to the Polyphemus. The teacher was like "Wow,you really *love* the Odyssey, don't you? 10/10!" I would have passed either way,but only a musical can get me to speak as passionately about something.
I love the Odyssey! I got into Epic after reading the Odyssey.
This is a great way to warn students to not rely on you as a primary source. I know your story is different in a lot of ways. But I do enjoy where you take things, and I enjoy how in some places you linger or streamline to enhance the narrative
BUT as an English teacher who used to teach The Odyssey, I would've loved to play some of your songs to draw parallels from the epic poems to your musical. I do recommend to read the original source! Even my students who hated reading actually quite enjoyed it!
I absolutely loved reading the odyssey, what’s funny about this is that i actually recommended EPIC to my English teacher AFTER I read the Odyssey and she loved it! But yeah if you get the chance I think everyone should read it it’s a great book!
I'm working on becoming an English teacher, and if I get placed as a Freshman teacher and have to teach the Odyssey, I'm going to make it an assignment to watch modern adaptations of the Odyssey (there are a lot), and I'm definitely going to include Epic and have them pick out comparisons! I had to read the Odyssey as a student, and I remember finding comparisons being one of my favorite things, so I feel like having music that sort of corresponds to certain events, even if it's not completely accurate and like you said, you took those creative liberties (as you should/can; it's not like the Greeks weren't already doing that), will help students connect, especially when these songs are so fun.
I love the Odyssey so deeply. It changed my life when I read it in high school. Also, if anyone is interested in learning more about Greek mythology and reading the “prequel” to the Odyssey, The Iliad as translated by Emily Wilson is EXCELLENT and so beautifully fluid and rhythmic you will love it.
This vid is FRESH
I literally *just* had this same conversation with my younger sisters about Epic and The Odyssey last night! So funny that you have now mentioned it too! Also, yes! Absolutely read The Odyssey! I loved reading it in school and would have loved having Epic to supplement my reading and to had our teachers lead discussions on why certain liberties may or may not have been taken and why we create art like adaptations of iconic pieces. This is just some of these reasons why I'm really excited for Epic and it's impact on the world of creative arts!
I found epic bc I was doing a lil final summary as a quick last minute summary before my final and stumbled upon EPIC! Fav character in the Odyssey is Circe, but I definitely like Hermes the best in EPIC
i am in fact a student and have a test on the odyssey coming up, but i listen to epic for inspiration to actually read the book
I had my high school Odyssey experience before I even discovered EPIC, and I honestly think that made it even more fun. The delight I felt when finding out that in this version, Odysseus DIDN'T cheat on Penelope with Circe cannot even be described, and it's really fun watching what Jay decided to change and to keep from the original. For school, I only had to read an abridged version, and EPIC is really making me want to read the whole thing in full.
We need a petition to write Winions into the Odyssey
My first listen of Epic I thought I was going crazy thinking I had forgotten or misremembered parts of the story. EPIC is a great rendition of this story, though. Especially with the change to focus on Odysseus' character motivations. Great change
I literally discovered EPIC a few weeks ago, with Survive, when we were covering the cyclops part at school. Made it a lot more interesting to do my work while listening to it :)
Honestly I thank you so much for this Musical as it has inspired me to read The Odyssey! Not only that- but I also The Iliad, The Song of Achilles, and Circe. It’s fair to say I have a bunch of reading to be doing heheh
This is a message people need to remember for all original material to adaptation situations. Thank you so much for sending this out. And I absolutely love your portrayals of Athena and Hermes, they feel so...right.
Reading the Odyssey now because of Epic, love your songs ❤
As the wife of an english teacher, he actually uses Epic as a comparison and interest hook to encourage them to read the odyssey.
This is why spark notes exist-- but also the Odyssey is SO so good it was my fave in high school. Also EPIC has been my brain worm since finding it so both is good. Honestly an analysis on how changing some of the moments adds or deters from the original themes would be a sick essay to write.
I looked back through some of Jay's videos and saw how his hair has evolved..... I love that it happens to every musical artist -w-
EPIC was actually a bonus assignment in my Greek mythology class. The prof provided a playlist people could listen to if they wanted (while we were reading the book, and there was an extra credit essay to compare the source material and EPIC)
I’m so glad you mentioned this! I actually started to read the Trojan cycle and was curious to see the differences between epic and the odyssey! There are certainly many (you make Circe infinitely more likable). Kiddos in class, go read the Odyssey. Epic will lowkey hit harder (I sobbed during the gathering of shades)
I think adaptations are important for exposure, and a spring board for exploring further and getting people into the source material, and I love them for that
fun fact: as someone who as studied the odyssey times and times again, i love listening to EPIC for this exact reason! i love the changes you've made, and seeing Odysseus more of an actual human and less of the ✨great epic hero✨that he is in the odyssey just makes me love this musical even more. So, keep it up with the good work man💪
