I think that some people perceive persecution as making their beliefs feel more valid and more real. Think of it this way, if someone doesn't take your beliefs seriously they will be apathetic towards you, but if they are persecuting you it means they at least are taking your beliefs seriously enough that they actively consider you a threat.

I agree. Virtually every ideological group does this. Pagans (as the video points out), liberals and conservatives, countries, even Christians. I was talking to a priest recently and he brought up the persecutions by the Roman empire to illustrate the precarious position of the church in modern society.

I was a "neo-pagan" for many years. I was very active in the community and from what I experienced the "victim complex" is very very strong there. Also, the individual who asked about the backpack sounds like they have some deep issues.

While I agree in theory, in principle I believe that not going against pagans and the false religions of this world is exactly why there is a resurgence.

@@paulwheeler3723 Burning and destroying someone's personal property isn't the way to go about it. From my personal experience it was EXACTLY that sort of ignorance, zealotry and hatred that steered me toward neo-paganism to begin with. It wasn't concern for my soul .....it was about people not liking those who don't fit into their own narrow minded vision of how people should look and be. That being said, genuine prayer and love for their soul is the best tool ,not hatred.

@@paulwheeler3723 That's your opinion and I respect that. From my angle however, the fault lies in a poor understanding of basic Christian doctrine, no matter the denomination. No where in the New Testament are we taught that violence against property or person is ever legitimate.

Yeah when I was an Odinist there was definitely a persecution complex. We even recognize a litany of martyrs that were killed during the conversion period. People like Eyvind Kinriffi and Raud The Strong, both of whom were tortured to death by Olaf Tryggvason. There’s also a story that gets passed around about some king or jarl that was forced to convert and he asked the priest that baptized him where his ancestors were, the priest told him that his ancestors were in hell and so the man replied “then that’s where I want to go.” I think every religion has their own claims to persecution. It galvanizes your beliefs and provides an emotional argument to your claims. I can tell you right now that if when I was a pagan, someone snatched the mjolnir from my neck and threw it into the river, it would not change my beliefs. I would instead become more firm in my beliefs. I wouldn’t have asked the questions that led me to Christ because I would have been too busy being angry at the Christian’s who persecuted me by not only destroying my property but something that was very dear to me at the time. I only warmed up to Christians when they were warm to me. I was always a conservative and traditionalist pagan so this wouldn’t work for the lefty Wiccan and satanist types, but through conversations I’d had online I began to see that we were fighting on the same side even if we weren’t on the same team. Things which disgusted Odin also seemed to disgust the Christ god. This opened me up to explore Christianity and eventually start asking questions about my own faith until I came to the conclusion that the faith of the Aesir doesn’t make very much philosophical sense, however this Christ is probably real and who He claims to be. This is also why I stress we shouldn’t treat all pagans the same. Some of them are our friends and simply lost souls in need of our prayers. We ought to remember that some of the greatest saints were once pagans and even persecutors.

I practiced Wicca for over 20 years and I would feel prosecuted if someone did that to me. Also, just because someone has a Ouija backpack doesn't necessarily mean they're into the occult. Most occultists make a point to NOT mess around with Ouija boards.

I used to know a woman who claimed to be Wiccan, the persecution complex was so strong. She expected me to defend her and her nonsense beliefs just because, and belittled my beliefs while crying if I pointed out even a single contradiction in hers.

The capacity for "Christians" to ignore almost everything in Jesus's teachings, while emphasizing almost everything he ignores, never ceases to amaze me. Why not a series on the primary teachings of the gospels regarding the perils of greed and pursuing wealth? Or a series on justice, peacemaking, and our duties to the poor, outcast and stranger? Or the condemnation of self-righteousness and religious hypocrisy which is so prominent in the gospels? Or maybe the need for the Church to repent for the horrific crimes of its representatives against "the least of these?"

As a Catholic, even I have to admit that Christians in the West have a persecution complex. Now in other countries, there is legitimate persecution of Christians and it is tragic. But in the West, Christians are still privileged.

In our culture it is extremely fashionable to be a victim. Extremely common coming from all faiths, both left and right. Saying that it's somehow exclusive to Christians makes me think you've blinded yourself to it when it comes from other faiths so you can justify your hate for one particular ideology
