The Oberammergau Passion Play 2022 - Short version

From May 14th to October 2nd 2022 the 42nd Passion Play will take place in Oberammergau. Only two months before the original premiere date on May 16th 2020 the Passion Play had to be postponed for two years due to the Corona pandemic. Over 2000 participants will bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the ears and eyes of the audience in a five-hour presentation on the imposing open-air stage. Almost half of the inhabitants of Oberammergau enact with great devotion the story of Jesus whose message gives billions of people hope and strength. The play covers the period of Jesus entering Jerusalem and continues up to his death on the Cross and his resurrection. The new production, under the direction of Christian Stückl and the artistic team of the Passion Play in 2010 and 2000, the stage designer Stefan Hageneier and the musical director Markus Zwink, reflect the tremendous community achievement.
For five months the villagers will play the roles of Jesus, Mary, Pontius Pilate and the apostles, soldiers and priests. The orchestra and the singers will bring the exceptional music created for the performance by the composer Rochus Dedler on stage.
All this against the backdrop of the words of the evangelist Luke at the end of his description of the tale of suffering: “And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.” (Lk 23,48)

I saw the play two weeks ago. I was overwhelmed with emotion at this magnificent production. Thank you Oberammergau. God bless you.
What a wonderful tribute to find this on the internet... I lived in oberammergau when I was a child and I remember it well... I live just below the mountain past the village which is the highest with the Curve on top called the keuffel mountain... we lived in a beautiful Log Cabin facing the mountain and just below was a beautiful Lake... The Farmland was stretched out to the left and the village was mostly Green Pastures and now as I see on this video it is consumed with houses very little land left... The growth of population in the world has changed the balance of nature... I miss oberammergau the most beautiful little village of all time with hand-carved cuckoo clocks and hand made Angels cut out of wood and the Beautiful violins that are created within that Village... There's so much talent and wonderful people that love Jesus Christ I miss my little village

I wish this was more frequent. Like maybe 5 years. I heard of this back in the ‘70’s when we were stationed in Stuttgart but as happens frequently, life sort of got in the way and I forgot about it.
God is honored by the promise kept by Oberammergau and Oberammergau is honored by God's faithfulness to their promise kept. Wish it would be every 5 years.
I went in 1984, age 17, truly memorable. Might go again in 2030!!

I feel so blessed to have been able to experience this magnificent Passion Play. I've wanted to see it since I was 14 and my cousin attended on a trip to Europe. I was scheduled to attend in 2020 and when our trip was canceled I was devastated but thought it just was not to be. Thankfully I was able to find wonderful travel companions who helped me during our tour. The Play was culmination of a dream come true and an enhancement of my spirituality and Christianity. God bless the people of Oberammergau for keeping this sacred promise.
We saw it on August 4th - a simply stunning spectacle - so moving and wonderful.

I went to Oberammergau back in 82 when I lived in Germany, but never once went to the play 😢

Well, it's generally every 10 years on (0) years. Actually in 1984 it broke tradition and in 1934 to celebrate the Nazi party.

I wonder how was your Covid-19 pandemic in Oberammergau. Same as before, historic plague?
Is the invasion of Ukraine impacting the Passion play? We have tickets for May 15. First the pandemic postponed the event and now hopefully NOT this invasion so close to Germany. Do you have contingency plans? thank you.

No, the war in Ukraine does not impact the Passion Play. The infection rules of the Bavarian and German government apply. We are confident that there won't be any regulations in May.
Does the audience have translation headsets?

No, but an English text book will be available on site.

It isn't really necessary, like when Mass was in Latin. At least for most Christians, we pretty much know the story. But for those who don't, I understand that there are guides in the major languages.

Rehearsals have begun on January 6th this year. Orchestra and choir are rehearsing since the beginning of November 2021 and our workshops are busy working on the costumes and the stage set.

'Historical accuracy' is inevitably questionable in any form of theatre production. Besides which, it is not an essential ingredient for conveying the essence of the story. In fact, in my own view and as we have seen before in many of these productions, a reasonably stylised representation of the period is often a far more effective and distinctly potent way of presenting them.
