NULLARBOR-ing?
Far from it, in our opinion
We had been looking forward to crossing the Nullarbor for quite some time. It’s one of those things you hear about a lot when planning a trip around Australia🇦🇺. Well after almost a year in WA it was time to start the infamous Nullarbor and head east. Our only plan was to take our time, see the sights and just play it by ear with no timelines.
Leaving Norseman, we pulled up at the Balladonia Roadhouse to stretch our legs. There hadn’t been a great deal to see up until here. Not far down the road we came to the start of the ’90 mile straight’ - Australia’s longest straight section of road. We did about 70 miles then called it a day and set up at Baxters Rest area.
The following day we packed up and headed off to check out a blowhole and some sinkholes. Good old wikicamps led us to some cracking spots that were not signposted and would have missed if we didn’t see the pinned points of interests. During our side track adventures we saw so much wildlife - kangaroos🦘, shingleback lizards, wedge tailed eagles and more. We even had to slow down for an echidna crossing the Nullarbor, as we were heading to our campsite near Madura. We setup at a great free camp up on the ridge overlooking Madura and the surrounding landscape, which was nice.

    Your videos are always well anticipated and are awesome. Australia is the country i was born and grew up there until my teens. A place that shaped me in a positive way and my memories are still vibrant even now that I'm almost 50. Living in Cyprus and watching your videos always makes me a kid again. Great job you guys.

    The Madura (Mad (rhymes with had)-ewe-rah) Pass is an iconic place. It was where WA potatoes were transferred for transport to the East coast. I've done the Nullabor twice, each way. Canberra to Norseman and vice versa. It's a drive to take in every side road and soak up sun rises and sun sets, and soak up the solitude - not a road to take when you've been away for a while.

    We enjoyed our two trips across there. Coming back the first time was interesting though as we had a radiator leak in the old 1962 Bedford bus and I put a big beer making container full of water on the dash and connected a pipe to the top of the radiator. Got us to Kalgoorlie ok though :) I was not happy to be going home though and we only spent a year there before heading off again.

    Two wheel drive, easily into Cocklebiddy cave. A little bit rough but easily doable, and all firm base. Another interesting overnight stop is at the old Koonalda Homestead, about 20 km north of the highway. Lost count of the number of crossings since December 1970 (still dirt from the WA border to Nundroo SA in those days) but did 42 return trips within a three year period from 2002-5, and averaged better than one a year in the rest (not including flights), to 2020. Last came west in March 2020 pre-covid closure dash. Still love the trip, but no longer drive at night. Oh, throw in four crossings on motorcycle too, two in 47C.

    From personal experience the fuel is always cheaper at the Eucla motel before the border roadhouse if heading east. On the south side of Ceduna there is a 24/7 diesel self serve fuel tank on the right before the airport for cheap fuel.

    Noice. The nulla is one of Australia's most epic drives. A must do and my favourite. You actually get to understand that silence is deafening. I remember in the early 90s a team went cave exploring on the Nullabor and there was a freak storm and flash flood which resulted in a major rescue op. The indigenous population claimed one of their ancient spirits were disturbed, it was very unusual.

    Love watching you guys but it was cringeworthy at the number of places you guys missed along the way between Norseman & Madura Pass. I take it you guys didn’t research it properly? Seriously not having a go at you, I don’t subscribe for nothing & I have given you a 👍. There are stations both to the east & west of the Eyre Highway. There are access tracks to some spectacular sites on the Western side which will take you to the coast & remote Australia towards the eastern side of the Eyre Hway. You could have left your caravan at the Shell in Madura Pass & gone for a day or two trip along the tracks (rarely used but east to see & navigate. I could write for ages explaining the locations but don’t want to give away my favourite spots to everyone. But I will say this, take a PROPER look at the maps along the Eyre & zoom in & you’ll hopefully see what mean. There are tonnes of places to check out & explore & getaway from everyone. Good luck guys, love watching your videos.

  • @Sparkysontheloose

    @Sparkysontheloose

    3 жыл бұрын

    We knew about the places but at the time couldn't justify the constant back and forth of the highway. More the one factor stops us from that. The navara started playing up Not dog friendly $40 fuel return trips, even unhitched. Remote journey with no back up. Plus if we did everything then there would be nothing to go back to. Remember it would take 10 years + to see most of Australia and we got a lot of life left in us haha.
